Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

On business trip To salt lake city

I brought my 680 to drive to the hotel and visit clients.

I pre-loaded their addresses and added them as favorites. Problems with new addresses was to use a nearby restaurant address as a substitute.

An unexpected use arose when the airline lost my luggage and I used my custom POIs to find a Target to purchase toiletries.

All and all, very productive use.

Trip to Salem, Massachusetts

On a recent trip to Salem our Garmin 2720 got us there no problem. My husband predetermined the route, and downloaded it.

On the way home, we gave Garmin freedom to pick the "Fastest Route" home. We didn't have any avoidances checked. Garmin took us through the worst part of the city, with traffic lights at almost every intersection. Luckily, I spotted a route number on a sign that I was familiar with, and we shut off the Garmin and followed our familiar route.

I'm sure it would have gotten us home, but it sure was the long way!

I might do a simulated route to see what the route would be if I choose "Shortest Distance".

LOL...it's with me, but not exactly helping with the navigation.

I'm up in Vancouver this weekend; drove up from Seattle. While I had the border selected as my destination, I knew that my trusty 200W would quit on me after the crossing. Nevertheless, it showed I was traveling on Canada 99 (same road as US I-5) to Vancouver for quite some time.

Figured I'd keep it on and running even if it couldn't match up with non-existing maps, since it would presumably still know my lat/lon even without a map. That way, if I broke down or was in an emergency situation I could at least call in my exact location based on lat/lon.

Thankfully, it wasn't needed!

maps for N A are seemless

The map you have in your garmin is for North America that includes Canada. That way you don't have to be afraid when crossing the border north wards.
I live north of the boarder and I have in my garmin 670 the N/A map and is working well.

Picked up Half a Cow

Ok, so it was butchered and packaged but the GPS still got me there. Instead of calling the packaging house and asking directions, I used their Phone Number to reverse trace them to get their address. I then placed it in the GPS and drove 1hour 10 minutes directly to them.

Got to love it!

California's recent election

I volunteer working elections. As a Field Inspector in Santa Clara County, I'm responsible for overseeing eight to twelve precincts (voting locations) in the county.

That means a lot of running around! By pre-storing the locations of my precincts, plus other nearby precincts, the locations of supply depots, and the like, I get quite a bit of use out of my GPS for the election.

Where's the nearest precinct from where I am now?

Get me to precinct 1136! When should I get there?

Get me to the nearest supply depot!

Setting this stuff up, plus familiarity with using the GPS for these kinds of tasks lets me focus on driving, and not on figuring out "do I turn left or right up here?"

A big help!

Italy

Last trip was to Italy.
Used both GPSs.
Flew to Bologna, trained to Florence.
Stayed in Florence a few days,
then on to a villa in the Tuscan countryside,
Where we spend a week.
First road trip in the countryside I realized I had the GPS set on pedestrian mode.
My wife has a love hate relationship with the GPS, always asking it to guide us,
Yet quick to point out its faults.
We have started to rely on it to much.
My wife asked, before the GPS we used maps, why don’t we have a map?
Duh, navigational aid. Bought a map that day.
Everything went great after that.
Then on to Rome, for a few days.
Where the POIs from this site came in handy.

Tried to get layout of race track

I tried to map the left and right fog lines of a road course to get a layout that could be used to determine the best line (at least on paper). I was getting +/- 15 foot accuracy but I don't know it they were all off the same distance or direction or was it random. I need to experiment some.

LA to Grand Canyon...

A week ago, we used both the 250w and the 60CSx to navigate and log a trip to a campground just outside of Williams Arizona, and then on a day trip to Grand Canyon. At GC, the wife and I did a 2 mile hike (Kaibab Trail) down into the canyon (almost 1500ft) where we were on a photographic expedition. Nice to have both GPS's that have 2 different feature set's. Of course we had to stay until sunset at Mojave Point to get that fantastic set of sunset photo's. It got cold enough that I couldnt feel if I was depressing the camera shutter anymore, except that the photo was being taken. IT WAS WORTH IT!!!

Whew, long trip

Well, just got back from a really long trip.

Home to Lafayette, IN; then through Chicago to Madison Wisconsin; Then to the Mall of America. 5 days later turn around and reverse the whole trip.

I'm just going to state this..... I am NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, EVER going to drive through the City of Chicago, or the state of Illinois again. You people drive like maniacs, and your traffic and tolls suck (Yes, I know the tols are higher in NY City). Please don't flame me over this if you like the state or the city.

Driving Around NYC

Last week we were in New York City. My daughter had surgery in NYU Medical Center. So the daily driving from her home in Brooklyn to NYU Medical Center on the east side of Manhattan was quite an experience. The Garmin got us there and did a lot of rerouting around traffic congestion. Now only if it could have directed us to a parking spot. The garage at the hospital is convenient but pretty expensive.

GPS is smarter than I at times.

In times past, my GPS has taken me down some rather narrow and little-traveled roadways. A certain level of common sense is usually adviseable to go along with the GPS's directions.

There is a work location which I travel to from time to time and have been scheduled to be there at 9AM. The GPS showed me an efficient route through the metropolitan area which lessened my driving time.

Now, I am to be at this same location at 8AM. The GPS has repeatedly shown a different route to take. Now, I am driving to the center of the city via the Interstate, and then out toward the suburb. The morning traffic out toward the suburb is light while the suburb traffic toward the city is bumper to bumper.

The distance driven is longer, but the time saved is amazing. I would of never considered this route without the GPS. I suppose my thought on using some common sense with what the GPS says just went out the window!

Last Trip for GyPSy

ABQ to Colorado Springs: Nuvi 660 (GyPSy) was firing on all cylinders until approaching Raton Pass then she lost satellites. The next 150 miles and driving in and around the city were without guidance. (It's amazing how much a city can change in 25 years.)

Fortunately, after a 12 hour rest GyPSy regained her senses and guided us through the rest of the weekend...until going home and approaching Raton Pass from the North.

She hasn't found a satellite since and a new 780 will arrive next week.
