Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

last trip with garmin

Our last trip was to Bullards Beach State Park in Oregon, U.S.A.. The Garmin worked well most of the time. I'm tryint to learn how to add to the map database because the Garmin could not take me to the lighthouse located on the State Park.

Ocala to Huntsville

Took our first long trip with the 750 and was very happy with the guidance. I put in a couple waypoints to take a slightly different route in GA away from the Xway. A neighbor told us of the road and we found it very nice. Many trees and bushes were in bloom and it was very scenic. Had no problem finding our destination even in the very confusing neighborhood streets. House location was off by 3 homes, but we found it easily.

While there I was playing around with the Nuvi and was changing some settings to experiment. We then took a trip to a restaurant about 20 miles away and I had a lot of problems. The unit kept telling me to turn around and get off the xway, which our host assured me was the correct way to go. I eventually discovered I had left it in pedestrian mode. It doesn't like to walk on xways.
Worked fine when I returned to driving mode.

Hope I'm not the only one who's been red-faced with that move.

I'm starting to look for a motorcycle compatable GPS for my hubby for Christmas.

MM, I looked up your Zumo 550, it gets great reviews on different forums. I'll add that one to my list. I'll keep checking the prices. They usually get pretty competitive around the holidays.

http://gpstracklog.typepad.com/gps_tracklog/2006/11/garmin_zumo_550.html

Take a look at the Nuvi 500.....I just bought mine for $250 (free shipping) from Amazon. Easy upgrade for TTS, and it's 100% waterproof too. Has 2009 street map PLUS TOPO. I have a Ram mount for my bike and my snowmobile. RAM makes many diferent cycle mounts, such as the master cylinder mount, and their Nuvi cradle is 1000% more secure than the Garmin one. The 500 works well in the car too.

Whatever you buy him, I'm sure he'll be a happy hubby.

I was in southern California last week on a business trip (specifically, Foothill Ranch and Rancho Dominguez). One day, I took a ride along the Ortega Highway (CA-74) to Lake Elsinore, I-15 north to Ontario, I-10 west to downtown LA, then I-110 south to Carson (where my hotel was).

Danger???? I lost it!

I haven't been on in a long time, sorry. Last trip I took was to Denver. I was quite surprised that my Garmin worked on the plane. It was pretty cook seeing the top speed at 640mph. I like to show it off because everyone at work knows I drive a Kia Spectra....lol

Aldi Food

Used my Nuvi 660 to find a quick way to get to teh new Aldi Food store that opened on the other side of town from me.

Also, I've been working with it in offline mode to map out a HUGE trip from Tennessee to the Mall of America. Yea, driving from Knoxville, to Bloomington... AND going THRU Chicago (Thank goodness I'm insured). AND to top that off, it's over Memorial Day weekend/week.

Plus I have another trip in just 3 weeks back to Blowing Rock NC for the BlueRidge Wine Festival. It's a great place, and we have such a great time there. Last year was our first trip to the festival, and already this year we've been called by a few placed there asking if we are coming back this year so we can get some priority reservations for hotels and dining.

For anyone in the East Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina areas, you should check out hte Blue Ridge Wine Festival.... Blowing Rock is a small town, and everyone knows everyone, and you're considered family even if you're there for the weekend. Ok, enough pimping...time to get back to planning.

Next trip

Have my next trip planned. Cleveland to Washington DC to Luray, Va to Pitt, Pa. The DC area is filled with red light cams so it will be nice with the Cameras POI.

And to make it worse

The District is facing a revenue shortfall and plans to decrease the amount of shortfall by installing up to 100 additional cameras. This was recently published in the Washington Post.

Cruise ship with Geko 201

I preload the harbors we are visiting so I have a better idea how we are doing (nice to know the speed is reduced during a storm and how late we will be).

Marking a waypoint at the dock makes it easier to get back to the ship.

Pittsburgh

usint the GPS in Pittsburgh sure makes life asier. The roads are not layed out in agrid due to the terrain and GPS makes it so much easier to navigate this city

Another Denver trip, including blizzard!

Wow, did it dump snow last Thursday thru Friday morning. The city pretty much shut down, everyone went home early. The news channels were calling it the "epic" blizzard.

You don't need to post every week, but you do need to have activity in 3 of the last 5 weeks to remain active.

GPS led us correclty but we didn't believe it.

This weekend, we went on a trip to a state park in Oklahoma that we hadn't been to before. The GPS directed us to it (a custom POI downloaded from this website) but our C330's internal database showed the park in a different location.

Because that park at the custom POI's location was so small, we went looking for the location on the Garmin's internal database (only to spend 20 minutes and find nothing there). We finally returned to the original small park to find it was indeed the state park. (Small but a good place for a picnic.)

first major roadtrip with 7-month-old

We just got back from our first roadtrip with our 7-month-old son to visit his grandparents in FL. Total mileage was approximately 2300 miles.

Planning to use my GPS

for a road trip to RI

Ft Lauderdale --> Panama --> L.A.

Leaving this Saturday for this trip. Got my POI entered, along with ports and landmarks. Not the easiest thing with a Geko 201 without maping.

Wilmington NC to Napa CA

OK, we flew from ILM to SFO. I used our Nuvi 760 to navigate from SFO and all around Sonoma and Napa Valleys. Downloaded the CA Wineries POI from here and used it extensively. All had a great time, drank some great wine and did my part to stimulate the economy. I just had to put up with my father-in-law complaining about bailout money going to wineries and helping out Pelosi. I told him to quit watching the news all the time.

Satellite acquisition indoors

It is a common misconception that GPS acquire signal like cell phones; they do not. Cell phones get their signal from towers on land. GPS get their signal from satellites orbiting Earth's atmosphere. Since they are much further away and most times require direct line of site, it is difficult at best to acquire satellites indoors.

Ashland, etc.

Went to Ashland, OR with my wife weekend before last. Saw Macbeth in the afternoon and The Music Man in the evening on Saturday. Used the 76CCSx and the nüvi 760 combo for geocaching around the Lake Shasta area on the way home Sunday. Excellent combo. Last Friday my wife had to travel to Redding for training and I told her I had work to do in my Redding office as well so we carpooled. On the way home she reminded me that we hadn't found any of the Cottonwood area caches we had loaded up the weekend before. We only had the nüvi 760 but we used coordinate matching and picked up 15 geocaches on the way home to Chico. Gotta love the Garmins.

Noobie

Another noobie here, hope I'm doing this right. I've made one trip with my 260W, matter of fact I bought it expressly for this trip. I'm an amateur Civil War snoop, and planned a trip from Ohio to WV (Harper's Ferry) then multiple sites in VA to include Manassas, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, the Jackson Shrine, Appomattox Courthouse, and lexington (VMI). Spent 5 days on the road, let 'Squeaky' lead me, and never looked at the atlas until I got home, to check my back trail - it was perfect. Never again will I travel without her. I'm in love!
This year - planning to see Shiloh, Corinth, Ft Donelson, Antietam, South Mountain and Gettysburg.

The GPS will work, but unless you purchase or obtain maps there won't be any local display.

"Scenic Route"

Decided to take a different route back from Disneyland to my home in Arizona. We exited I-15 south and headed toward Julian, CA on CA-79 and then taking CA-78 out of Julian. That's where it started to get interesting.

The first 10 miles or so out of Julian was downgrade switchbacks. Not a single straight stretch of road. Normally, this wouldn't be a big deal, but my wife gets carsick easily and she was already not feeling well. By this point, we were also about an hour behind where we would have been if we'd have stuck to the interstates.

We finally arrived at our next turn and I realized what the GPS was telling me. It said to turn right onto "Great Southern Overland Rte of 1849". I found out later that the full name/title is "The Great Southern Overland Stage Route of 1849". I couldn't find a whole lot of information about this route after getting home and searching the internet.

Anyway, my GPS said to continue 48 miles, at which point my wife nearly strangled me (after all, it was my idea to take this different route). By this time, it was getting dark. In that 48 miles to the interstate, we met only two other vehicles.

In the end, a trip that should have taken no more than 4 hours or so ended up taking around 7 hours. The wife wasn't too pleased. Below are some Google "Street View" links that show some photos of the route.

Turning onto the stage route: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Anaheim,+CA...

This is where Google Maps says the road turns into "Sweeney Pass Rd". Zoom in on that street sign and you can see the full name: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Anaheim,+CA...

They weren't kidding: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Anaheim,+CA...

TN, GA, AL, and MS

We just returned from an extended trip through TN, GA, AL, and MS. GPS was extremely helpful when navigating in and around Birmingham, AL, Jackson, MS, Memphis, TN and Nashville, TN.

Actually Thru Chattanooga

I probably used the wrong description. Nuvi wanted me to go straight up I75 to Lexington then I64 to Louisville. Instead I took the I24 exit towards Nashville to connect to I65 then on to Louisville. I24 can be backed up depending on the time of day but if you are traveling during non-rush hour it saves about an hour over going up I75. Nuvi continues to want you to get over to I75 for a while probably because you are actually on a south-westerly course for a few miles on I24. Once you start traveling north-westerly, it decides to agree on the I24 route.

Just to a strange location in Dallas, Texas. GPS found it!

Europe Maps

I purchased City Navigator Europe Nt on a DVD and downloaded the maps I need to my Garmin and then downloaded all the map to an SD card just incase I need something I didn't download. I am new to making routes and POIs but because of this web site I have made several routes and POIs for the extra time we will have, and have downloaded some that others have on this site.
Glad to know the GPS will work ok there. I was afraid the streets were small and the buildings would block the signal out.
Thanks.

Last Trip with GPS

With a Nuvi 360...

From Kansas City, MO (Independence actually)to Oakland California and back. The GPS was used by two young girls on a trip for business, and without the GPS, they would not have done so well.

We all know the GPS is so important to so many, and I hope others loan theirs out as well.

Drive with care!

The beach

Not far - and it rained - not worth fishing or swimming but just great for a VERY lazy long weekend! Really hard to take. GPS very handy for short trips in the back streets - not quite as bad as the hill towns of Italy but close....
