Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

Need a map update

I just took mine on a buisness trip that was about a 3 hour drive. The GPS did well on the long drives, but around my place of work, the roads were definitely newer than the maps that came on the C330. I'll be getting the 2010 map update soon.

First time in the dark

me and my 225W are less than a week into this GPS thingy,so on my wwekly trip to a nearby casino I made it a point to start out later and return home in the dark.. AMAZING .. Even more interesting than in daylight and the graphics really jump out at you without distracting you from keeping an eye on the road. Living and learning ! I guess that is what life is all about.

That is because the silly thing keeps updating. I hate to sit at a redlight and watch the time increase on the Nuvi.

Nüvi 785T

Just got a Nüvi 785T to replace my Nüvi 660 cant wait to see how it does around NYC cause the 660 is terrible it zooms out to much and the route line is too big and it blocks the road. I did a simulation on the 785T and it looks good. The 3-D Building and Junction view are really cool features. I drove on the highway with it this afternoon and the MSN traffic is very accurate in my area. I am taking a trip to Boston later this week so well see how it does.

My Last trip(s)...

Used it in San Juan PR, St Lucia, BVI et. al. Last month and this past weekend it was a great thing to have along for going to a boat show in Newport Beach CA. No red light tickets heading my way - thanks to this site...

land of the red rocks

I drove to Sedona, AZ this weekend. It's about a 7 hour drive, not too bad. Good thing I loaded up the red light POI as Phoenix is targeting all speeders on their freeways. At one point, my gps device was ringing its head off.

Business Trip

Cleveland to Anderson, IN and back. It tried to get me off of I71 while going toward Columbus but I persisted and it complied. Funny thing was, on the way back it just took me across I-70 onto 670 in downtown Columbus and on to 71 north. On the way down it wanted to go on 30 West. Might have been shorter but couldn't have been faster.

Old Route 66 in Az in 2009 Challenger

We did Phoenix - Wickenburg - Seligman - spent the night - Old Route 66 to Kingman - Old Route 66 to Oatman - Golden Shores - I40 to Kingman again - back to Wickenburg and home in our new 2009 Challenger SE for its inaugural road trip. Had a great time guided by the trusty Nuvi 750.

This weekend we're planning the back way to Show Low through Globe and the Salt River Canyon. Maybve head east towards St John or elsewhere. Not sure if we'll stop and spend the night or just drive back home.

I use it alot around the city, going through back streets to avoid traffic and generally taking the scenic way whenever I can. Also when we're out and about and decide to go someplace, it's usually useful for finding where we want to go.

Bob

*edit - Golden Shores, not Golden Valley.

I use every day except when

I use every day except when going/coming back for work. I just love it, now I do not have worry about missing turns/exists when going to new places even in city/suburbs.

Haven't left yet

But this spring we are going from near Wichita, KS, to Chicago, then Niagara Falls, then northern Main, Boston, Plymouth, taking the ferry to Long Island, Statue of Liberty, Hershey PA, Cincinnati OH and then back home.

I've prepared the route already, any tips and tricks on long trip usage are welcome.

Latest Trip

My wife went to Tallahassee then Orlando. The Nuvi didn't let her down especially the malls.

Cabin

Used it to drive back from our Cabin. Just decided to take roads we had never driven on in Central Michigan.

Boston

Tried to use the Garmin to get to a restaurant in Boston, but unless you have up to the second information don't count on it to get you there.

The city closes streets for parades or charity walks and gives visitors no clue as to where to go.

I would gladly double my donation if everyone would just sit at home for charity or have something in a function hall. These walks can really mess up a traffic pattern.

Just venting.

Santa Barbara, California

Wife and I went to stay at a little casita up in the Riviera in Santa Barbara. I had loaded my 360 with places and restaurants that we wanted to visit (actually a lot more than we would likely be able to visit). They have some tricky streets up where we stayed, but Jill always got us home to the casita. More than once did I miss a turn, and it was actually very reassuring to hear Jill's "Recalculating!". Even in the dark we could feel confident that Jill would take us home to the casita. I felt that the Garmin just with this trip had justified my purchase.

JCA

I love not having to take 95 on a Sunday!

I just came back from a long weekend in Upstate NY. The drive up was fine because it was cloudy and a bit chilly. The drive back was in the middle of that awful heat wave and I discovered much to my horror that my AC was kaput! I couldn't face the endless monotony and concrete of 95 all the way back to Maryland.

So I tricked my GPS by putting my office in as my destination (north of Baltimore City) and let Lee navigate me through the backroads of Pennsylvania. Aside from the ever present perfume of caw pastures and the road they seem to have moved since my last map update (that really freaked him out!) it was a much more pleasant trip.

Excellent idea. I-95 on Sunday's is getting to be unbearable. There is almost always a backup northbound in the AM and southbound in the PM.

Hi All : I just got back form a 1400 mile Florida trip trip. I was especially pleased with the rest area notifications received along the way. It helps to set the alert about a mile in advance of the location.

Thanks

Europe

Went to Paris, Geneva and Venice. That was very nice and had a wonderful time. I don't recommend traveling to Venice in the summer. Because of the city being surrounded by water it might be a tad bit smelly. Just my opinion...

Bon voyage!

Cottonwood AZ

Drove to Cottonwood with my wife's 750-spot on. Stayed at a real nice, inexpensive place with a mini-suite having a full-sized refrigerator. Loved it! If you need a nice place with nice friendly people in the Sedona area look up the Pines Motel. Last night we had a cowboy dinner with entertainment and today we'll take a train ride through the verde Canyon.

last trip with gps

I went to Queensbury NY from my house. I switch the nuvi 255w from fastest to shortest route and cut almost 10 miles off the trip. The only disadvantage was it took me on a lot of 2 lane highways. I did find gas for 10 cents cheaper per gallon price. Yes I am a cheap skate smile

Traffic Avoided

Went to an award ceremony for a number of folks at work - unfortunately, the ceremony - at a Baltimore venue - ended around 2:30 in the afternoon just as the Friday traffic was kicking into gear. Picked up an early warning of the backups and we were able to avoid the worst of it!

To Stowe, VT but ..

End of March did a ski trip up to Stowe from NY, with a stop in Central MA. On way back had the same stop in MA. But the NUVI slightly changed the route for the VT to MA leg. Both worked equally well so I'm still not sure why. Perhaps because of exit locations for the Interstates.

I used mine to travel from Atlanta to New Orleans. Loaned an old unit to a friend traveling to Florida.

How many years you been in Boston?

Cheryl, you ought to be used to the cow paths and hassles of Boston driving by now. Ever try to cross Comm. Ave. during the running of the marathon? I tried that once. About 7 hours later I got across...

God bless the T. Plus, now I live in NC and just have fond memories of Boston traffic (including the picture I use for my photo on this site, which is Lake Massapoag, in Sharon, where I lived for many years).

As for my travels, I don't think about the past uses of my GPS. I much rather look forward to the future. Heading back to my original home state, of MD, for a family reunion in Annapolis, next month. July 4th I'm going to be using it to cool off, shooting some class 3's-5's in GA on the Chattooga river (where 'Deliverance' was shot). Paddle faster, I hear banjo music.
