Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

I have a new walk-way around my local reservoir...

It's about a mile, two trips to get in my 10,000 steps.... shock

In town

Used it to get to a Dr.s office waaaaay on the other side of town where we hardly ever go!

Where I'm at right now...

I’ve been coming to the Ft. Worth area for years, flying into DFW to do so. I don’t know about your experience, but for me the signage to get out of DFW to any of the bazillion highways through the metroplex is got to be about the worst since those around the DC beltway. Before my trusty Garmin 200W, I would invariably make at least 2 wrong turns out of the airport before finding my way to the correct piece of asphalt ribbon needed to get to my destination.

Not so this time. Even without TTS I was able to confidently and accurately navigate my way on the first try. If I had only had American Jill to guide me lo those many previous times. I must also add though that this experience now has me jaded. With so many highways and interchanges to navigate, I can barely contain my desire for a nuvi equipped with the lane assist feature.

BTW, as long as I’m talking about Ft. Worth/Dallas/Irvin, does anyone know of a churrascaria in Irvin that is supposed good but cheap? I heard something like only about $15 per which would easily be half the price or less of most Brazilian-type steakhouses.

WA DC

I spent 4 days in DC for the Inauguration. I was helping manage a Task Force of Soldiers assisting the local law enforcement at the concerts and on the parade route. Had a good time. Can't find my butt, think it froze off.

New Orleans

Went into New Orleans and over the lake...worked very well!!

Stillwater, OK

Went to check out Oklahoma State University with my son who might be going there next year. One afternoon we just drove around without navigating to anything in particular. It was nice to see the side streets so we could meander a bit.

Jack and I went to Colorado

Jack and I went to Colorado to help my son on his remodel-- and then returned last week-- he found the way and it was a nice drive-- hardly any snow and it was 55 degrees over the mountains in Utah! He is resting now after getting loaded with new POIs.

Sunday we are headed to Dallas and then on to Florida to my other son's big 40 birthday. Going to surprise him at SeaWorld on Saturday. Jack like to travel!

In Denver for work, over the weekend. Did I bring my Garmin? No. Did I get lost driving at night? Yes. The streets all look the same. I eventually made it back. Sigh....

wrong airport

My last trip was ad-hoc, after going to the wrong airport in Washington, DC to pick up a family member. Not noticing that the landing was at the National-Reagan, I went to Dulles instead.

After realizing the error, I selected National-Reagan from the standard POI on the Magellan 1412.

I selected the "fastest way" from the four options (the others are: shortest, most highways or least highways).

Strangely, as soon as the 267 toll-road passed under the 495 beltway, the screen of the GPS went blank with an error I've never seen before. It was something like "The GPS cannot calculate the route by the method selected". I went to the menu to select the same destination again, but this time routing with "most highways" instead of "fastest way". The GPS found the route again and gave me directions up to the final destination.

Very weird problem.

one of the requirements toward accessing portions of the site without fees is to be an active user. The symbol used to indicate an active user is the Windmill - and you keep its blades turning by all the hot air (or in this case, electrons) generated with your posts. The new user faqs have a lot of information on the different badges and their meaning.

Use it every day for traffic info.

Well, I use my GPS everyday in my 50 mile roundtrip commute to work and home, for the traffic feature. Unfortunately, my Nuvi 755T does not understand the multi-level interchange from westbound US Hwy 290E to southbound I-35 (Austin, Texas) and recalculates twice as I follow the overpass from one to the other. Then it wants me to get off the Interstate at the 38th Street exit and then get back on again! It also is 0.3 miles off as to where this exit is. I've checked and these do not appear to be Navteq mapping errors, but Garmin's inability to handle a multi-level interchange and double level Interstate highway (although it is not as complicated as the spaghetti bowl interchanges in Houston or LA).

My last road trip was to Houston and back home, plus finding 4 locations in Houston. I used my wife's TomTom One XL for that, since I didn't have the Garmin yet. It had no problems on the trip, except Teleatlas, in its latest map update, introduced two new errors on the street where I live. This is why I decided to get a Garmin. But the TomTom has no problem with the Hwy 290 - I-35 intersection! You can't win . . .

Myrtle Beach, SC

Went around with the Nuvi360 no problems stayed at the Hilton.

Used my own POI for first time

I created the SEPTA (subway stations around Philly) POI and used it for the first time last night when picking my son up at a station for a weekend trip home from college. Never even been to that suburban city before. Sure beat trying to follow a map in the dark by myself.

I used it to find a nice beach in the Tampa Bay area from Disneyworld. We went to Honeymoon Island Park.

Took the Nuvi skiing this friday. Nicely avoided a road closure (traffic feature is well worth it, in this case). I think I only added a few miles to my trip. I even got to cross a covered bridge!!!

Also enjoyed some new CDs I ripped and added to the SD card.

Last Trip with GPS

Hi There,

My last trip was to a nearby city. I had loaded my GPS with custom School Zones, Speed Signs, and Traffic Light locations along with associated sound files and icons. Oh my!! The GPS constantly beeped, blaired, and verbally warned. The alerts were so constant that they were eventually ignored.

Thankfully, this was a short trip which was used to verify and experiment with the GPS. It was certainly a learning experience. I am thinking about creating a silent mp3 file to be used in certain situations, while not compromising safety.

POI red camera and speed traps

I've loaded the last file of red cameras and speed traps on the GPS, and have been visiting them in the area nearby I live and work, to report on false or missing entries.

Cheers,

New Guy on the Block

Hi all. I'm new to this site and want to say HI.

My last long trip with my GPS was a couple weeks ago. Left NE Tennessee and went to DC for a few days then down to Raleigh, NC for about a week, then back home to NE Tennessee. I rarely go anywhere without my GPS.

Steve

Miami to Savannah and Chicago to San Francisco

Took Amtrak from Miami to Savannah and had the Nuvi running. Flew from Savannah to Chicago and used it in pedestrian mode around the city. Took the California Zephyr from Chicago to San Fran and had set up a "tour Guide" so to speak of the route with different poi's along the way. Left the nuvi on 24/7 in our bedroom/cabin using a ac/dc coverter and the msn receiver for power. Made for a nice track log when I downloaded to MapSource and viewed in Google Earth.
Spent a few days in San Fran and went to China town, Golden Gate Rec. area, USS Hornet, and the Alcatraz night tour. Found parking very easily using the file found on here (Thanks). All with the guidance of the Nuvi.
I only experienced one problem while in San Fran. One night getting back to the hotel pretty late we decided to go thru a McDonalds drive thru on the way back to the hotel. I found the closest one to our hotel, routed to it, and drove in circles for 10 minutes. Not only was there no McDonalds there, it obviously was never there. There were warehouses and buildings that looked like they had been there for 10 or 15 years. I had a problem while in Chicago where my POI's wouldn't load. I thought it was the Nuvi, but it turned out to be a corrupted poi csv file that was messing everything up.

Leaving Saturday for Florida.

This will be our first "trip" with my 260W. I have loaded several POI files including Rest Areas, Coop ATMs, Walmarts, Spring Training Ballparks, and Churches. I tried to create a TourGuide for Civil War sites. Will also use a text reader on my laptop to tell us all about each battle site according to Wikipedia.
