Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

I use my GPS constantly

My daughter plays volleyball, and we travel to all the away games . My garmin has played a big part in finding these schools. Found out last night that one of the parents had missed her girl playing in the sectional tournament game.
She could not find the school until it was to late. Sometimes these trip are 2 hours away or more. After the game was over Nicole ask me if i had seen her mommy, I said no . That night my daughter told me that Nicole's mom had made the trip but,it was to late for the last game of the season. She just could not find that school. sad

All I can say is GOOD LUCK!
In fact - for anyone heading to the UK I would suggest that they consider every road off the motorways has a speed camera just around the corner - they are EVERYWHERE - probably why noone has bothered trying to locate them all. Would send your machine nuts!

Last Week

Tour of Cape Canaveral, Kennedy Space Center and St. Augustine. All went well except when Emily, my C340, tried to send us into a restricted area, with a large man with an even larger gun! Thankfully he must get a lot of us since he just told us where to turn around instead of shooting first and asking questions later.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving will be the first significant trip in recent weeks, and I'll be counting on the traffic information to be up to date! Looking forward to a relatively non-stressful trip in the AM; the return is generally more busy.

Safe travels to all!

Covered Bridges

Ok, we took a trip up to North Carolina to a wedding. We decided we would leisurely drive up there and have some fun with the GPS. We both agreed that it would be a blast to visit all the covered bridges between Florida and North Carolina. Wow was I surprised!

First off let me thank everyone who spent the time and energy to create the wonderful POI's on this site for items such as Covered Bridges. We utilized the POIs for Covered Bridges on this site and they were right on the money. A few of the bridges had washed away or been moved, but we did experience over 20 bridges.

My advice to you is when you plan that next "necessary" trip to visit relatives, you also take the time to add in a little fun for yourself. Utilizing the POI's on this site to help you "stop and smell the roses" is a wonderful way.

BTW... I wish we could post pictures here since I took an enormous amount of pictures of the foilage and bridges we experienced. It would be a nice way to share the experiences of using the POI's on this site.

Thanksgiving Trip

We were invited to a friend’s ranch outside of Buffalo TX for Thanksgiving, so on Wednesday night we headed south through the heavy traffic in the Dallas / Ft Worth area. I had preplanned two routes for our 750 using Mapsource so when the one was jammed we were able to switch to the alternate route. I love the route capability of the 750. Well, back to the trip. As we traveled, the hunger monster attacked and we decided to stop and eat. We tried the built-in POIs but they did not show the restaurant we were looking for. This is why we load the POI Factory POIs. After calling up the desired restaurant list, we selected the one on the route and proceeded to have dinner. When we were about an hour out of Buffalo our friends called and said they were stuck in heavy Houston traffic and would barely beat us to the ranch. We said we were going to stop to get whipped cream, as I had forgotten to pack it in the cooler, and they asked if we would also pickup milk. Seeing that it was 8pm, we feared the grocery store in Buffalo (population about 1800) would be close by our 9pm arrival time. Not knowing were the closest grocery store was located my wife used the built-in POIs to find a local store on our route. The 750 took us to the new waypoint and then took us back to our route with only a 15 minute change in our arrival time. It is really great to be able to find destinations and then have accurate voice directions. The return trip Thursday night was uneventful. Next trip is to Phoenix for Christmas.

Over the river and through the woods x2

Wednesday: MD to LBI, NJ
Thursday: reverse of Wednesday
Saturday: MD to Eastern Panhandle of WV and back

When I went to program in my father's address in WV, the street name didn't come up. I remembered they changed all the street names some years back when they put in a reverse 911 system, so I tried his former street name... voila! Point to point directions!

Your Portion Of Light Whether you are a brilliant flame or but a tiny spark matters not-for the world needs whatever portion of light is yours to give.

Paris, geneva, nancy, lyon

This summer I spent a month business trip/pleasure in a few cities in France and Geneva Switzerland.

I'm glad I've purchased the Europe maps. It definitely saved my wife and i. With the language barrier in a few cities I've ventured, the navi never failed to point me in the right direction. It definitely helps to learn another language or at least enough to get you by.

Our best venture was a scenic drive through the alps in Switzerland.

We drove a windy road up the alps, made a stop at dixiem dam, parked our car on a train that took us through the mountains, once we got to the otherside it was absolutely gorgeous, then we stayed in a hotel near blausee (lake front view of the alps), next day we drove to interlaken. Europe has so many round a bouts it was confusing, luckily my navi's impecable direction never got us lost. We had a great time! I hope to do it all again soon.

Did i mention that I used my navi on our honeymoon in Amsterdam? Well, that's another story for another day.

Bon Chance!

Atlanta to New Orleans

I drove from Atlanta to New Orleans over Thanksgiving. The gps (660) was great on the trip. Helped located upcoming rest areas and to notify people of my arrival time. It also helped find a restaurant (Casamento's on Magazine St). Best oysters in town.

Washington DC

Used it recently for a business trip to Washington DC. I stayed beside the capital and had to travel every day 45 minutes to my business location. Though the GPS wanted to take me to a GATE that is currently inoperational, it accurately took me to the vicinity of my meeting area. Once I found the meeting area, I was able to plug in its parking lot and was rewarded every day with accurate instructions back to the site.

In DC we used it to find restuarants since every place needed us to walk to it we did not want to make mistakes.

Downtown Chicago

Took my Garmin 360 to Chicago. The signal went in and out between the skyscrapers a couple times but overall it performed extremely well. I've had my GPS for a couple years now and I am still amazed by the functionality of this little gadget.

Guided me well on a snowstorm yesterday in Buffalo. Visibility was so poor but having the gps saved the day.

Trip to Canada

Well wasn't my last trip, but was my last major trip. Had to go to Canada for my company. Guided me beautifully! No problems, I then finished up what I had to do and figured I would take some time for myself and headed to Canada's Wonderland, no problems there either.

EXACT OPPOSITE!

I'll be leaving the cold and snow of the northeast for the sunny shores of Florida. Brief stop in Daytona, then again in Melbourne, then off for the Everglades and Key Largo for New Years eve.
Round trip should be about 3000+ miles.
Do I get a wind mill for that?

All over.... hecks creation

Thought I'd be a good son at Christmas time and take my mom on a shopping trip to the upstate of SC (about 65 miles away). She wanted cloth for a quilt she was working on. Entered Fabric in the Garmin... Hancock, yeah that's a good one. Drive according to Jill, find an long abandoned store that I can only assume was Hancock Fabrics. OK the next one is All American Fabric, cool lets go, 20 minutes later I see a huge sign ALL-AMERICAN FABRIC. SWEET!!!!! Guess the weeds four foot high around the building wasn't a good sign. evil So! We know there's a huge cloth store another 40-50 miles up the road. Jill gives me questionable directions out of this little strip mall and I made a wrong turn onto a four lane highway and Jill tells me "Make a u-turn"... make a u-turn in the middle of a four lane highway??? Then as you all are probably aware of Jill started to get snotty because I wouldn't swing a u-turn... Sheesh what a trip! rolleyes

Anyhow that's my Garmin gripe. Merry Christmas all!

NE AR to Tunica

Trying out wife's christmas present. She used to freak out about driving in Memphis. With the Nuvi leading the way it was the most relaxed she's ever been. It was spot on all weekend long except for locating a Wendy's in Tunica, MS and a Sam's Club in Southaven, MS. Figured out the POI thing when I got home and don't expect that to happen again. Love the forum.
