3597 searching for Satellites

Something new for my 3597.

When I turn the key after overnight parking the unit has to search for satellites takes a few minuets to lock up.

Happens every day never did this in the past!

Any thoughts?

Must be....

Something going on with the satellites or the atmosphere. I have been experiencing the exact same problem on my 2699 over the last week or so. Never did that before and I was wondering if it was my unit or what. I live in the Atlanta GA area.

I've 2 3597 devices

One in a car that's in a garage and one that sits out

The one that sits out almost always is ready to navigate as soon as I might it and start the car.

The one that is in the garage almost always takes several minutes (8-10) for it to sync up with satellites.

That's what I'm seeing.

My thoughts

I use my 3597 on holidays & the remaining time approximately once a month to prevent the battery from completely discharging.

Every time I've powered it up, it takes between 30 seconds to a maximum of 2 minutes.

I would first try disabling Traffic Trends & resetting the trip data & then see if that helps any. If satelliite acquisition is still slow then I would definitely do a hard reset in which Garmin also recommends.

acquire satellites

The problem is not acquiring satellites it does that just fine in 1 to 2 minuets.

What is different is the fact it has to acquire satellites every morning. It used to already have the satellites when turned on each morning.

Device is always outside under windshield with clear view of sky plugged into an always on outlet.
Never did this until recently. Not a show stopper just wonder why the change and if anyone else has the same thing.

weather

It is normal to search for satellites, also if the they are some clouds that"s a factor too.

Solar flare?

Could be the solar flare.

The Telegraph, Tuesday 20 June 2017

"Huge solar flare to hit Earth as the Sun erupts"

A massive solar flare will hit Earth on Thursday and Friday, bringing with it the threat of power and GPS blackouts but also improving the chance of seeing the northern lights."

Found my problem....

While driving today my GPS showed me way off the expressway and was trying to reroute me back on it. I opened up the satellite view and saw that my accuracy was at 83 feet and that the blue individual satellite strength meters were very low. This was on an open highway with no trees. I recently had installed a Z-Edge Z2 dash cam that attaches to the rear view mirror. Out of curiosity I unplugged the camera power and sure enough my signal strength started rising and came up to 9 feet accuracy. I played with this several times with the same results each time. The dash cam is interfering with the satellite signal. Unfortunately, moving the GPS is not an option, so while in my county vehicle I will have to deal with crappy GPS reception from now on. I briefly played with the idea of forming some sort of metal shield under the mirror, but that seems like a headache. Now I really miss when Garmin had the antenna port on the back of the GPS units. Those were awesome! Oh well, at least I know it's not my GPS crapping out.

.

So, move the dash cam to the passenger side, upper windshield. Experiment.

Well ...

It's not crappy GPS reception, it's interference from your dashcam. I had a cheap one once that did the same, changed it for a better model.

Can't move it....

It replaces/covers the existing rear view mirror so there is no place to move it to unfortunately.

Either way....

Sure, it's interference, which then causes crappy GPS reception. I don't think the county will get me a different dash cam if I complain about my GPS reception. I'm looking into the feasibility of moving the GPS to to drivers side, it just can't be on the windshield. It is currently mounted with a proclip right above the radio. Sadly they don't make a drivers side clip for my vehicle. I may just deal with it as is, still debating. I still wish they had the external antenna port built into the new units. That was such a great feature. I'm considering taking one of my older units and experimenting with adding the external port to see how it works.

Beanbag

You can get a bean bag mount. They stick very well to the dash and can be had at decent prices from Amazon. I use one with my 3597 and it stays put, very well.

Is this going in your personal car or your "Work" car? My brother in law is a cop and when he tried to use his personal GPS, he also got a lot of interference but not from the Dash cam but from his other electronic equipment that was in his cruiser.

So if that is the case... moving it may NOT work.. Just my thought.

Frontend Overload

The interference is probably caused by a very strong signal that the Dash Cam is emitting. Most digital devices generate RF signals.

There are FCC standards for electronic devices on how much the devices can emit. Remember the news stories about airlines not allowing portable music players or hand held games to be turned on during take-off and landing? Some airlines would not allow any electronic devices to be on at anytime. Stray RF signals were being emitted that interfered with the plane's electronics. Most airlines still have some restrictions (I think).

In this case, the Dash Cam is emitting a signal that is so strong that it overloads the front end (where the GPS signal gets amplified) and it is stronger than the GPS signal. This stronger signal keeps the weaker GPS signal from being amplified in the GPS.

This is a problem that is not un-common and can sometimes occur if during the assembly a piece of shielding is not electrically connected properly.

Sorry if I have bored some of you again - yes, I saw those eyes glazing over! laugh out loud

And you have to remember

And you have to remember that FCC Part 15, says you, the consumer, have to accept that type of interference. Bah! sad

Interference

I would agree on interference as the culprit. However you can easily check by shutting down the other device.

Yeah, but the OP is in a work vehicle. He can't turn it off, unless he turns off the vehicle. Moving it to the far left should help.

Yes but ...

we have two folks here with a similar problem, only one (I think) is in a work vehicle? And only one has a dashcam? So I've lost the plot slightly!

One is certainly dashcam interference ... not sure about the other issue.

Gary1P is the OP and his problem is the daily searching for Satellites. Don't know. Mine only does that occasionally. Normally, when it does that, I have gotten in, started the car and driven off before it can get a fix, so it searches. I don't have any suggestions.

The second problem brought out is the interference from the Dash Cam. I've seen my GPS mess with the satellite radio when I had the sat puck on the dashboard. Both have such sensitive receivers that it doesn't take much.

solved

Was parking in a new location just far enough from the old location to block satellites due to trees blocking signals.

Reacquires pretty quick so it is not a problem.

Thanks for all the response.

It is in my work vehicle with several radios and a laptop computer. However it worked fine before they installed the dash cam and works fine if I turn it off. I moved it to the left side and held it there for about 3 minutes watching the satellite view screen and it did improve, but only slightly. For now I have just resolved to live with it. I've only lived in the area for 6 months and still don't know how to get to places I am unfamiliar with. It doesn't complete wig out very often (has only happened twice), so if it does really go nuts trying to figure out where I am when I'm out of my normal areas, I'll just use my phone. I'm just happy to know it's not my Garmin having issues. Thank for all the ideas.
