Updating Garmin Express

It was a first, but lesson learned. This morning i plugged in both my nuvi's to check for updates. Fired up express and after 10 seconds or so i checked for express software updates. It found an update and asked me to update. MISTAKE. Somehow the auto software update kicked in also shortly after the manual update began and the nightmare began...lol. Two simultaneous updates running. Well the updates crashed of course. Uninstalled it all and tried again. Wouldn't install the service, told me i had insufficient rights. I knew that wasn't right. Did a search for Garmin on my drive and removed every reference. Still no go. Reboot...still no go.Into the registry i go. After 10 minutes all Garmin entries are removed that can be removed. Rebooted and finally the software installed. Moral of the story. Wait for it...lol. Don't manual update if you can help it.

Sorry for not being more clear

I was wondering if you had used Revo Uninstaller.

It sounded like you did not because of "Into the registry i go. After 10 minutes all Garmin entries are removed that can be removed."

Yes

Both times, and no revo does not remove all instances. I have had issues before when upgrading Nero and some office stuff. But all in all most of the time it does what its supposed to. If you check your registry you will find that Garmin has a lot of entries that are protected. Revo can't remove those. Below is one of many.

One more option

One thing you could have tried before manually tinkering with the Registry is MS's Fixit Tool. It worked for me when I couldn't update or uninstall Garmin Express:

Yep

I could have, but i'm no stranger to the registry, its much quicker and a lot safer for me. I've tested a lot of fix it programs that do more than i wanted them to do in the end. By the time i check over all the entries they want to delete i might as well do it my self. Btw even Revo deleted Base Camp on me. I could have read through what it wanted to remove and un-ticked those entries, but I didn't care. Relying on Revo's backup if it mucks up is a crap shoot also. MS's Fixit Tool does work sometimes.......rarely...lol. Hmm... it's called "MS Fixit Tool"
MS stands for Microsoft not Garmin, and on a side note Microsoft stated way back with Win95 that if you want your product to be supported you need to send us info on your hardware and or software and you have to make it compatible. I was a Beta tester for MS for a number of years.

All: I recently tried to update maps and the only option was to try and update Garmin express first. It continuously had an error stating that the previous version could not be deleted and it would give a fail message. Standard uninstall via control panel did not work. I found the following post from the Garmin support forums site that gave instructions for using the Microsoft fixit tool. As they state, I had to run it several times to undelete each component. After that, I rebooted and it then finally allowed installation of the current Garmin express. Not sure if this is your same issue or not, but wanted to post in case others are having this issue. Link follows:

Everytime I update express...

It starts the process of updating then stops and says files are missing and can't continue. I close it out and re-open express and it has updated to current version every time. Still running XP.

Version?

@Frside007

Frside007 ... so what version does your Garmin Express say you are running (as shown on the "gear" menu under "About")? If you are able to make the current version (5.5.0.0) run on XP I am sure there are lots of folks who would like to know how to do it.
