Strephon comes thru again...

Wow you're awesome, I was just looking for the large JCV file. Thanks a million for posting it for the guys that need it Strephon.

Many thanks Strephon_Alkhalikoi!

Works great! Much appreciated! smile

Thank you!

Strephon, a very big THANK YOU for providing this JCV file.

Is there a free WinRAR?

Strephon_Alkhalikoi, do you happen to know if there is a free version of WinRAR? The free test version I used on the last map update expired.

7-Zip

Phil I just use 7-zip. It's free and works great for these 2 files. Just extract Part 1 and it automatically extracts and patches Part 2 to make one file. I don't even bother with WinRar anymore.

Thanks!

Strephon, Thank You for again making the full-screen JCV file available. Download, extraction, and installation was easy and completed with no issues.

I regularly use Free RAR Extract Frog (https://is.gd/4xZaBo) to extract the rar files. After downloading both of Strephon's files, open the Frog window and just drag and drop the part1.rar file onto the open window and select the destination location.

What is the file name and size. GE installed a large one on my Garmin so I may not need to spend the time downloading this one to see it's the same as what I've already got loaded.

Large JCV downloads.

Just out of curiosity,do you get any stats on the number of times the large JCV is downloaded? I have the sense that the demand is declining as folks retire their 8x5 and 1390/14xx nuvis.

You're probably. I have a Nuvi 1450 that has been a real trooper for seven or eight years. I'm sure there are fewer and fewer of these old dinosaurs around.

I confess

I confess that now that my 855 is a backup to a backup, I haven't gone for the Large JCV for the past 2-3 updates. Similarly, as a sub-backup device, I also don't go to the effort of doing a clone update, but settle for a smaller internal map update of USA/Canada rather than the full NA.

What next?

Okay, so I installed 7-Zip and successfully downloaded the two .rar files. What do I do next to turn those two files into the whole .JCV file?

Tricky Installation of New 2018.10 large JCV

Hi, I have Garmin 1490 and unlike the past large jcv updates, I am stymied on how to install this new one. Before, I used to just go to the Garmin Nuvi, then drill down to hidden .system folder, then to Garmin sub folder, then disable a small size jcv file. By doing so, I enable the larger jcv file in my SD card. Everything worked up to the 2017.40 version.

The newer 2018.10 map update must have replaced hidden .system folder with something else. I cannot find the hidden .SYSTEM folder anywhere. I know the drill of how to display hidden folders. Has anyone experienced the same thing?

I am by any means a guru. But read just enough to get by... Thanks for any help you can shed..

Your profile shows you with a nuvi 750, your post mentions the 1490 as well as the .system folder.

I don't think the 1490 has a .system folder so do you have a newer device?

To see the .system folder on the newer devices that have such a folder, you need to change the device from MTP mode to MS mode. Also, if using a PC, you need to change several of the Windows default Folder Options to be able to see the folder. If any of the above sounds like something you you haven't done, check the FAQs here or ask in a reply.

One last thought. The newer devices with a .system folder use split screen JVs and most folks do not manually add the Large JCV file. More on this:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/45292

If indeed the nuvi in question is a nuvi 1490, then so a search for the old .jcv file in the nuvi's Garmin folder, then jcv sub-folder. Also, I think for the 1490 you can also disregard the MTP and Folder Options issues.

Shout back if you need more.

@CraigW

The nuvi 1490 does indeed have a .system folder although the 750 does not. In fact, that change in folder design was introduced by Garmin on the entire 1xxx series.

@simply1234 ... I can't explain why you can't find the .system folder on your 1490, but it must be related to something on your computer. I am sure you already have done this, but double/triple check your folder settings. I would try a different computer if possible. I assume you installed the map to SD card since the 1490 only has 2 GB storage with only about 1.5 usable. Did you use cloning or did you let Garmin Express put the map on SD? Is it possible that the small JCV file that downloaded with the map is actually on the SD card?

Wow, live and learn. That's so much earlier than I had expected. Obviously, I've never owned a 1xxx. Thanks. Can I continue to believe the 1xxx series did not switch to MTP mode or am I wrong there too?

Regarding 1234, could it be that a new PC came along since the last JCV install and the Folder Options remain the Windows default?

Well ...

simply1234 wrote:

I'm not so sure. Have you set Windows to show hidden AND system folders? These are two separate settings.

You are correct about no MTP mode on the 1xxx series. I believe MTP mode was introduced on the 34x0/35x0 devices. So there were several models starting with the 1xxx series up to the 3xx0 series that had a .system folder but not MTP mode.

Wow !! Tremendous Supoorts... I am overwhelmed... Thank you

Yes I have the 1490. I also have the older 750 as well. I have been updating the 1490 for the past several years following the same procedures; drill down to the .SYSTEM folder, then to Garmin sub folder, then disabling the small jcv file, etc... I did not have any issues until the 2018.10 version.

Maybe it is me. I am using Windows 10 Pro version and when I click on the "SHOW HIDDEN FOLDERS" in the Garmin NUVI Main drive, no .SYSTEM folder shows up. I took a screenshot of it to show the "missing" .SYSTEM folder, but do not know how to post it here.

See

My post above, there are TWO settings to change. You also need to set it to show SYSTEM files.

Any suggestions?

jb, your experience is exactly my experience. I just bought a new laptop two days ago and of course it has Windows 10 installed. (I'm coming from Windows 7.) Using Chrome, I downloaded Part 1 of the large JCV file without a problem, but Part 2 just hung. It said the download started but it didn't really. How did you resolve the problem.

Pilot04, I see you got it to work, but just for comparison purposes, in my 1450 environment, MapUpdater puts the MAP on the SD card and the .JCV file on the unit. (There is a JCV folder on the SD card, but MapUpdater doesn't use it.) On the 1450, the working large JCV file is in the JCV folder which is in the hidden .System folder. And yes, I also renamed the smaller .JCV file before I put the new, larger one out there.

Back in the 1970s Unix

Back in the 1970s Unix operating system was invented, and files and folders starting with "." were hidden.

The idea was users should not edit or delete these files, and are better off not knowing they exist. These files were usually files holding user options for software.

That's where I think the hidden files "." started.

In Microsoft Windows there is a Windows Explorer option(not to be confused with internet explorer) to display all hidden files.

I also like to make visible File Types. I don't know what made Microsoft think of the stupid idea of hiding file types.

@Phil, I mainly use Garmin

@Phil, I mainly use Garmin Express for my map updates. GE installed the Map on my SD card and put the smaller .JCV file on the unit under hidden System folder like usual. In the past, I would then download and install the larger .JCV under the Garmin folder on my SD card. I didn't have to rename or delete the smaller JCV file in the past. In order to make it use the full junction view in 2018.10, I opted to delete all the smaller JCV files(there were .JCV files from 2017.x and 2018.10) instead of renaming it. Once I removed the smaller JCV files, my 1450 used the larger JCV on my SD card.

The link does not work

Strephon the link no longer work it show a message that the files have been remove it.
