Entire speed camera database?

Hi,

I downloaded the rlc and speed-camera files for the first time today.

The speed camera file has under 500 lines.

Is this the entire nationwide database?
Or is it just the database for areas near my home?

another question

OK,

I have another question - perhaps I should be making it another topic? Oh well here it is.

I am used to the idea that there should be one bmp picture file for each csv file. And the filenames should be the same except for the file type of bmp or csv.

For example:
Speed-Cameras.bmp
Speed-Cameras.csv

I see many speed camera bmp files that have the speed limit in the filename and in the picture. Will the garmin nuvi be able to know which picture to display based on the speedlimit of the speed-camera? if yes, then what should the file names be?

For example I see files:
Speed Zone 15.bmp
Speed Zone 20.bmp
and so on.

Howard

don't confuse file with

Don't confuse file with entry or record. It's one BMP per file with a CSV. Even though the file contains many different entries with different speeds, they all share the same icon file.

The speed limit (the numbers following the @ symbol) trigger one of two alerts. A "standard" single alert if you are within range and going less than the specified value. The other alert is the "urgent" alert, which is the same alert except it keeps repeating. A different color background may also show depending on your unit.

Now, if you want to break out the individual lines in the file so all those at a particular value are together and rename the CSV a the "Speed Zone" to match the icon, then you can. It's much easier to use one of the redlight camera icons for the entire file.

3rd question

OK, one BMP file per CSV file.

You touched upon the alerts, and I have read here some instructions regarding playing the MP3 file ONLY if one is driving faster than the speed limit.

Tell me if I got the procedure correct:
1. Run Garmin POI Loader
2. Select save to Computer
3. Select folder for saving the Custom POIs.gpi file
4. Select directory tree holding all the CSV files (with matching MP3 and BMP files).
5. Select "Manual"

For the speed light camera csv file:
1. Check "This file contains promimity alert points"
2. select radio button "Alert whenever you get close to a point"
3. Alert at this distance: 0
By making this zero it will only play the MP3 file if I am driving faster than the speed limit?

Howard

Right

If you choose "speed alert" when you load the file and you are under the speed limit, no alert. By choosing "alert when you get close to a point" that is a proximity alert. When you enter the distance of zero, I don't know what will happen.

ok Speed alert

Ok, so I should select Speed Alert and not Proximity Alert.

Presumably,if traveling too fast, I will get the alert in a decent amount of time before reaching the speed camera.

Howard

Which file are you asking about?

Howard

If you are asking about the speed camera file, the @xx sets a speed alert. The alert sounds approximately 36 seconds before you reach the camera. You do not need to set any other item when loading the file.

For the red light cameras, most people use a proximity or distance alert. This is set somewhere between 500 and 600 feet. Because the file uses the word redlight, a default value of 400 meters or 1/4 mile will be set unless you set a distance. Look at the help file for POILoader. It has information on these types of alerts.

Speed alerts always sound. It's how they sound depends on the speed you are traveling.

Box Car, Can you elaborate

Box Car,

Can you elaborate about how the speed alert sounds when going below the speed limit, and how it sounds when going above the speed limit?

Howard

read just above

Read the response just above your 3rd question.

I Only Use The Tiles I Need

When I download the Redlight/Speed Camera POI's, I sort them in alphabetical order and then delete the states that I don't need. I run the formula for setting the speed limits on the speed camera file and then download the POI's. Saves a little space I guess. I don't need all of the 3000 plus POI's because I have no plans on driving in particular states or in Canada.

OK.....so where the heck am I?

Falsing?

Not sure if this is a true case of falsing, but I believe I properly downloaded the poi factory rlc & speed cam poi files and so far the alerts seems to be detecting rlc's.

However, recently I noticed a few alerts where i know of no installed rlc's within several miles radius.

I unchecked Garmin safety camera in "settings" (Garmin 255). This leaves just the poi rlc download active. Will see if that makes a difference, since I never did get those originally installed Garmin downloaded software to alert even when unit was in the vicinity of an RLC.

Garmin safety camera's

I've disabled these from day one. I've always thought they had to be out of date for the most part.
