SmartPhone Connection

Being able to send an address/location from a smartphone is a nice feature since we often are looking up a review of a restaurant/attraction or someone from our address book. Finding the car with the phone could also come in handy at times.

Newest , latest , greatest

It's always nice to hear of new models, which results in the previous years' models dropping in price by as much as 50%.

I'll be checking Amazon when I get ready to upgrade

I recently purchased a

I recently purchased a 2797LMT. The real estate on the 7" screen is great. Going from a 5" to a 7" takes some getting used to, but once you do, the smaller ones look, well, really small.

As a side note, before I picked up the 2797, I bought a TomTom 1605, which is a top o' the line model. Even though at the time the TomTom website said this model came with Blutooth, I was astounded to discover it did not! No phone interconnectivity. Just an unacceptable and baffling omission. Well, I put up with that nonsense for a while, even going so far as to purchase a Jabra handsfree speaker. Yet another device to juggle from car to car.

Didn't take long before I bought the 2797. Ahh, back in the Garmin fold, where I'd always been, but strayed from ever so briefly. Full phone functionality, giant 7" screen, fast boot up. Nirvana.

So now Garmin comes out with an even more advanced 7 incher, which of course I'm going to somehow have to justify having. Curse you Garmin!

re: I recently purchased a....

isn't that always the case?

The 7" model is gigantic.

Why no integrated dash cam?

Was disappointed to read, that garmin still is not making a 7" GPS with a built in dash cam, similar to the one Magellan already has out. At,least then they should bring to,the US the unit they, already sell in the Asian market with An integrated 'drive recorder'. This one has the separate camera plugged into the GPS and pivot arm mounted on the GPS window mount. Until then I will hang on to my 2797.

Received my 2014 unit and what a disappointment. The unit is all plastic and the mount is plastic. You have to disconnect the unit to take off the mount. Owning a 3597 which is all metal with a beautiful screen this new units screen is not as good since it has less pixels. Wow,what a step backwards.

Can you return or exchange it?

There is a discussion started including pixel offerings on the new models:

so I wonder if an exchange for a more densely pixeled screen would help.

Are you saying that your model doesn't have a powered mount but has the power cord plug into the nuvi? If true, that's a real step backwards. I'll have to look now and see if any of the new Advanced models have a powered mount.

[Update] From what I see on Garmin's site, these new 2014 Advanced models all use a non-powered mount and require the power cable to be connected directly to the GPS, thereby requiring a cable disconnect every time the GPS is removed from the vehicle. (It is possible that the most expensive of these models, the 2789, may not share this finding, but it's impossible to tell because the Owners Manual for the 2789 isn't offered yet and none of the images indicate how the 2789 GPS, mount and cable connect.)

As gadget_man stated, this is a big step backwards and a real reason to stick with older units with powered mounts.

The 6" and 7" models of the 2014 Advanced series have the same pixel count as the 3597 (800 x 480). The screen display may not look as sharp because your seeing the same number of pixels on a 6 or 7 inch screen as you saw on the 3597's 5 inch screen.

As far as I can tell the new 5" models have 480 x 272 pixel displays so they will not have the same beautiful display as the 3597.

Powered mount.

I agree that if the new Advanced models do not have a powered mount, it is a real big mark against them. It has been shown over and over on models since the 1xxx series, that the USB power port on devices without a powered mount is a common and frequent point of failure.

I think Garmin had a real winner with the magnetic mount on the 3597. Too bad they didn't continue with that design.

I agree, the magnetic mount is great. Just don't put your hotel room key card in the same pocket as your 3597. The magnet in the Nuvi will wipe that key card every time. surprised

I was going to buy the 6" version for the higher resolution screens but the 5" was the only model with HD traffic. The "higher end" 6" and 7" models don't have HD traffic. Once you have HD traffic you won't go bck.
