Hard reset

Custom POIs will survive a hard reset. Favorites are sometimes preserved and sometimes lost with the reset, so it's always good to have them backed up in case they're needed.

It sounds like your reset succeeded.

I have never lost my favorites when I have done a hard reset. I've done it on my 350 three times and my 3590 a couple of times. I have never had an issue when I've done the reset. (Maybe I'm just lucky.)

Am I at end the end of the road?

Trying to download the latest update on my Zumo 550 for my Harley. I know ancient, but I've repaired it myself 3 times and like it, so I intend to keep it it until it dies.
On each attempt to update the new release the only choice I am offered is Lower 49 SW, or Canada; I need Lower 49 SE, which I have now. I have a 4G SD card, almost full with music on it.
Any help would be appreciated.

Are you using a SD card? If so, how large is the card?

Edit ... just reread your post post and see you have a SD card filled with music. I think the answer is to get a larger SD card. I think the 550 will accommodate up to a 32 GB card. If you have 32 GB of music, you may need to downsize your music library smile

zumo 550

It's odd that you're not being offered the map subset you want but I've read here of several others having this issue with this map update or maybe this version of Garmin Express. One option is to try using GarminMapUpdater rather than Garmin Express and see if GarminMapUpdater offers you the desired map subset:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/39873

A better solution may be to install the full North America map to a SD card. Regardless of what you do, know that on a zumo 550, Garmin will not automatically offer map updates to a SD card. See below.

From what I read, the zumo 550 is one of the older Garmin GPS devices which is not offered a map update to SD card:

https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?...

Is it correct that when being offered a smaller mapset that you're not offered the option of installing the map to a SD card? I expect you are not getting this option and therefore the presence or absence of a SD card, with or without free space, is irrelevant to what Garmin Express offers you. Garmin Express is offering only a map update to your internal 550 storage which is tiny:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/34375

I haven't read where you've tried the clone technique to install a map update to a SD card, but that's what I suggest you try. Be sure to start with an empty 4GB SD card to ensure that the card will have space. The zumo 550 is entitled to receive all of North America so I expect you'll be offered the North America map update using the cloning technique:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/39231

The only other option you have is offered at the bottom of the second link, above. Click the "What do I do if my device doesn't support the SD card feature during the Garmin Express map update?" and you'll be offered a technique which installs part of the map internally to the zumo 550, then allows you to use MapInstall and your computer to install the rest of North America to a SD card for use with the zumo. Both cloning and this Garmin option require more effort than a standard map update to the newer GPS devices but either should give your zumo a map update with all of North America. Both techniques are pretty detail-intensive so you really need to be careful following the instructions.

Given the price of motorcycle-specific zumos, I understand your desire to keep the 550 as long as you can before replacing it and I commend you for your effort. Good luck!

Thanks CraigW

Thank you for taking the time to reply with a very detailed plan. Gonna take me time to go through all this. I did try the Map Updater from the link you shared, and while it did give me all the options for download, it said not enough memory for each one of them. My Garmin memory, nit counting the SD card, is down to bare bones with only the voice I use, vehicle, etc. I may just have to live with the last down load, but that is not a problem. After almost 10 years with this unit, I more than got my moneys worth! And it's up to date as of the last update. But I will try your other suggestions. Thanks again. George

USN Recon Heavy Attack Squadron 1, Smoking Tigers. --- Zumo 550 mounted on Harley handlebars.

Cloning to SD ... best choice.

When I wrote the earlier post asking you about the SD card, I didn't realize (until I read CraigW's post) that the zumo 550 is one of the models where Garmin Express doesn't offer map install to SD card.

Knowing that, I think your best choice is to install the full NA map on a SD card using the cloning method. It is really quite easy, especially on the older units. I would recommend getting a 8 GB SD card as that will give you plenty of room for the map and any music you want to keep there. As CraigW said, a 4 GB card should also work, but just will not have as much free space left for music files.

Edit: OOPS! It looks like I am wrong again! According to this FAQ https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?..., a 4 GB SD is the largest you can use in a zumo 550. Please ignore my earlier comment about a 8 GB card.

Whew, knowing this now will avoid future issues for our zumo 550 folks!

At least the zumo can read filesizes over 2GB:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/42561

unless it's a OEM zumo Series (Example: BMW zumo 550) in which case it will be necessary to keep the map installed under 2GB meaning that the Garmin map update method of installing a part of North America to the zumo and the rest to the SD card is the only way to get a North America map installed for use in these models! Yikes, what a hornet's nest. Berettag, was your zumo 550 bought as an OEM model from a bike dealership or was it a generic zumo 550 bought from Garmin? Your update options depend upon your answer.

I'm not sure that FAQ is correct, I've seen posts on the Zumo and other forums where 550 owners have used 8 and even 16GB cards.

Zumo 550's (2)

I just updated 2 Zumo 550's. Both have had maps on the SD card only. I used Garmin Express to install to computer only (PC) while one of the 550's with SD card inserted was connected to the PC. After the download finished, I then connected the other 550 to the PC and told GE to install to computer only. This one only took a few minutes to complete. GE express told me "only lower 49 states but MapInstall showed Candada and Central America too.

I removed the 550 from the PC, took out the SD card and put it in the slot on the PC. I then used MapInstall to install all of US and part of Canada to the SD card. Did the same thing with the SD card from the other 550.

I also carry a copy of the SD card in each 550 traveling case. And either one of the SD cards will work in either one of the 550's. In total, took me a little over 2 hours and 1 hour 10 minutes was the 1st map download.

Everything works great. Again, I've been doing it this was for a number of years. Used to use MapUpdater rather than GE but switched to GE last year.

Download went well

Installed via MapUpdater last night and everything went well. I have a Nuvi 1450 with an SD card and installed all of North America. After renaming the provided small JCV file, I copied the large JCV file into the JCV folder that's in the unit, not on the SD card. FWIW, the only thing that Garmin put onto the SD card is the map itself; everything else went into the unit. Very satisfied.

Ed Y, thanks for your reply

Read your response several times. Doing a risk assessment, and mitigation... Old habits die hard.
You downloaded twice to PC only, why do it twice? It's already in the PC from the first time. Did each download modify the internal memory on each 550? Were the old maps resident in your 550? How does the 550 know to look for the maps on the SD card? If I delete my old internal maps and try this and it doesn't work, how do I get the old maps back in? I don't have a slot on my PC for this type of SD card, can I accomplish the same thing with a usb cable to the 550?
This is why I may just keep the present set of maps and just roll with them. Thanks!

Excellent! Glad to know.

Excellent! Glad to know.

Just updated...

our 2455LMT and 2555LMT units. Stared by updating GE from 4.1.19.0 to 4.1.22.00 (thanks sussamb for the heads up about GE update).

2455 took 45 minutes from start to finish and the 2555 took 28 minutes. Not bad!

Noticed that 2455 had two JCV files, 6 SIDs, and 2 SQLite DB files all dated 2-17-2016 (last date the unit was updated) after installing the map and time zone updates today. The 2555LMT had one JCV file, 3 SID files, and 1 SQLite DB file after the same updates.

The 2455 was down to 1.37GB free out of 7.20. The last time free memory got that low the unit started to run very slow with lots of lag between screen touch and action. Went ahead and moved the extra (old) files to my PC as a backup and kept the latest ones dated 5-25-2016 (today's map update date) on the unit. All of the files on the 2455LMT now match exactly with what's on the 2555LMT.

Both units are working fine (more tests to come) and they each have around 2.81GB free out of 7.2 available.

Looks like the old files on the 2555LMT were cleaned up during the update but on the 2455LMT they weren't. Maybe I don't have a setting set the same between them. Used the same computer and GE and updated one unit right after the other. Figured the update install would work the same. Oh well....

Here's my understanding of the process

berettag wrote:

You downloaded twice to PC only, why do it twice? It's already in the PC from the first time.

The 1st download keeps the installation files on the PC. When the 2nd download is run, in a very short time, it will write the new key for the second Zumo so Mapinstall will have the key. If you do both installs to computer first before any Mapinstall, the SD card on each should have both keys on it and be interchangeable between devices.

Did each download modify the internal memory on each 550?

Not really sure, it may be that only the key is put on internal memory.

Were the old maps resident in your 550? The old map version was on the SD card which was in the unit during the download.

How does the 550 know to look for the maps on the SD card? No idea, I just know it does.

If I delete my old internal maps and try this and it doesn't work, how do I get the old maps back in? Backup the complete unit.

I don't have a slot on my PC for this type of SD card, can I accomplish the same thing with a usb cable to the 550? Not sure about that but i doubt it.
This is why I may just keep the present set of maps and just roll with them. Thanks!

Probably some guys on here that can further expand my explanations.

Notice a minor bug in the 2017.2 release

Just a nit !

I notice an exiting problem along I-395 in CT.

Over the past year CT has re-numbered all the exists on I-395 in CT to correspond closely to the nearest mile marker. Most of the exits currently display separate signage for both the old and new numbers.

In the 2017.2 release, the actual map was updated with the new exit numbers and appear to be correct but I noticed the photos in the Junction View files still show the OLD exit numbers. I've only used 4 exits so far with the new JCV but all 4 photo have been incorrect (not updated). I suspect they are all incorrect. I'm using D3060210A.jcv in my 755.

The same is true when using the other US & Can only JCV file D1279290A.JCV

SD Card Updates

I finally had to switch to SD card clone method for my 5 Garmin updates. All the GPSs are all working fine but GE is still reporting the zumo 665 needs a map update even though it is now running 2017.20 and the 3D map is working too. I removed it from GE and re-installed it with the same results. I'll tinker with it later, tired of GPSs for tonight.

I bought a 2598 a months ago. At that time I did all the updates and installed the then current 2017.10. All went well.

I also have two 255w's. I've always updated the 255w maps by downloading (uTorrent)the map files and changing the file name from gmapprom.img to gmapsupp.img and copied to the 255w SD card. Always worked well.

So I have the new 2017.20 downloaded to my 2598 and also to my computer HD.

1) No, the map is for the 2598 only.

2) The only way is to buy a numaps lifetime map update subscription for each 255W. I see it offered on Amazon for $80 so a decision to add the updates to a 255W needs to compared to buying a newer Garmin device that already comes with lifetime maps for close to the same price.

SD cards do die. It happens to me twice - once with a full size once with a micro-SD. I believe it depends how often you remove and reinstall them. The connectors seem mechanically weak.

An easy test to see if the full new 2017.20 map is in the nuvi and not the SD card is to power down the nuvi, remove the SD card, restart the nuvi and see what maps are in the myMaps page on the nuvi.

Since the nuvi 2595 is an 8GB device, there's more than likely space on the nuvi for the full map so the SD card was not needed. If remembered during the update process, both GarminMapUpdater and Garmin Express will alert you and let you select the SD card. If the alert didn't occur, the map should be in the nuvi. Now if MapInstall or the clone technique was used, we'll need to look deeper.
