Garmin map update 2017.20 is out

The new Garmin map 2017.20 is out. Installed with GE, no problem.

Yeah.

In past updates I always figured ~100 MB was a good estimate for the additional space that would be required. This one was kind of unexpected. It would be interesting to know what kind of additional data was added that caused such a large increase.

Just finished downloading

There was an error at the top of the screen but it did not say what. Under that there was a message that your data is up to date???

On my SD card are 3 folders and one file
File
Id.txt 11/26/2014 Text Document 1KB

Folder Garmin
gmappupdate.gsd 5/22/2016 GSD File 0 Kb

Folder Map
gmapupdate.gma 5/22/2016 GMA File 3KB
gmapupdate.img 5/22/2016 Disc Image File 2,713,856KB

Folder System Volume Information
IndexerVolume Guid 1/8/2016 File 1KB
WPSettings.dat 2/1/2016 DAT File 1KB

And I am trying to find my Junction View file. I found on my Nuvi:
Folder .System
The only file in this folder updated today
system.db 5/22/2016 Data Base File 2 KB
Folder in .System
JCV with D3191090A.unl 6/14/2013 UNL File 1KB

Where do I look for my Junction View as the one I thought I found wasn't updated since 6/14/2013.

Also, do all the other files look ok?

Also

I checked to update Device and Computer but I see I still have the last map on BaseCamp. Will try to update Computer again.

Edit: Just opened GE and was given the option to add map to computer. It took about 2 minutes and all is fine.

Now just need to know where my Junction view should be and if all my files are what they should be.

Thanks, Mary

I typed a response as Mary was typing her 'edit.' When I read the edit after posting my reply, the need for my response was eliminated since I was suggesting the use of GarminMapUpdater if the 'Install to Computer' offering was missing in Garmin Express. Mystery solved. grin

IMHO opinion almost all (possibly all) of those files don't look correct. As far as I know all of these files should either not appear on your device or be renamed IF a map update completed successfully:

gmappupdate.gsd 5/22/2016 GSD File 0 Kb

Folder Map
gmapupdate.gma 5/22/2016 GMA File 3KB
gmapupdate.img 5/22/2016 Disc Image File 2,713,856KB
gmapupdate.unl 5/22/2016 UNL File 1KB

For example, the gmapupdate.img files should be named gmapprom.img. On the other hand none of those files seem to be in the correct folder so maybe the correct files are and these are just left over items that the failed GE update session didn't/couldn't clean up.

I thought the same thing. My guess is an update failure or interruption near the end of a map update.

After reading both your opinions

I am going to try and reinstall the map. Will see what happens.

Crappy 2017.20

Did a nine hour 370 mile round trip today with seven stops along the way.
The GPS 2797 had me going all over hell's acre taking absolutely nonsensical routing. This happened on two separate occasions.

I always set the GPS up for the fastest route. Avoid toll roads, u-turns, ferries, off-roading and dirt roads. Avoid traffic is unchecked.

Canuk may know what I was up against.
Leave Orangeville on Hwy-10 south to 401. Then west to London.
Basically a one turn trip ! STRAIGHT forward !!!!

The GPS wanted to take me all the way to and on the 403 via Hamilton to London !

.

I finally had the time to update mine tonight. Went off without a hitch. So far no issues.

Just finished updating again

Every thing the same.

Everything I reported above the same on the Unit and SD Card after redoing the update.

I do have on the unit very old files
gmapbmap.img 3/14/2011 Disc image file 49808 KB
gmapprom.gma 5/31/2014 GMA File 1 KB
gmapprom.unl 5/31/2014 UNL file 1 kb

Would someone who has a Nuvi 2450 and updated see what files they have on their unit and SD Card? Thanks, Mary

EDIT: I just looked at my SD Card that I backed up before I deleted it and the files are the same as now expect the dates are from the last update.
gmapupdate.gma, gmapupdate.img and gmapupdate.unl (glad I did the backup so I could see what I had) I also looked at a backup of my unit from 4/26/2016 and all the files are the same old ones as above. I guess the files are named update when they are put on the SD card???

And I do now have my D3191200A.jcv file 5/22/2016 size 497,226 KB.
That was not there before I redid my update.

The

The gmapbmap.img will be on the Nuvi when it was originally manufactured and is the basemap. This basemap covers the whole world and will display major roads and cities but not in the detail that your CN maps will have. It's many there so no if your in an area where there are no detailed maps you will still have some map info to assist you. AFAIK it's never updated. The file on my 3597 is dated 2011.

The other 2 files are left over from what is probably the 2015.40 update which came out in March of 2015. The date would be the day you updated the Nuvi to those maps.

What I don't think you've told us (may have missed it) is do you have a gmapprom.img file in the .system folder on the Nuvi or SD card, or do you just have the gmapupdate.img file in the map folder on the SD card.

If you only have the gmapupdate.img file in the Map folder on the card, the Nuvi will work properly as any file name will do in that location as long as you have the .img extension. Although normally there wouldn't be files in MAP folder unless you move them there, if you have the big .img there and no gmapprom.img file anywhere else, the Nuvi will probably work just fine. I just have no idea how it ended up this way. confused

Just finished on the 2597LMT with no problems

gmapupdate.*

I've seen those filenames once before so I wouldn't worry about what they are called as long as they work. Why this happens on some devices I have no idea.

Files are always downloaded to update your GPS. The option to Install to computer is to take those files and arrange them so they can be used by MapSource and/or BaseCamp.

When I 1st tried to update GE said there was not enough space on my 8 GB SD card and did I want partial maps or the opting to put a clean SD card in my unit. I took the 8 gb and deleted all the files on the SD card and tried again. GE proceeded to update and those were the files GE put on my SD card. I have moved nothing. I reinstalled to see if things would change but the files on the SD were the same but updated to the correct time as the last update. The only thing that changed on my second update was that I now have the JCV file as I did not have it before. I had an error when the 1st update was complete so it must have been something to do with the JCV file.

And, all the files I reported in my previous post were all the .img files, (if I am remembering correctly) I will check again.
Thanks, Mary

Just checked again

The only image .img files I have on my unit are:
GMAPTZ.IMG
gmapbmap.imp

I am assuming the TZ means time zone and the bmap is basemap.

And the only .imp file on the SD card is gmapupdate.img.

If it works I guess all is ok..

I think I will do a master reset as I don't remember ever doing one. I always keep my POIs and trips on my computer and download a fresh complete download when I change anything so I don't think I need an update of my items. And I did a back up of my unit in April so I am good to go for a master reset...

Report on master reset after map update

Well I did my first master reset. Or at least I think I did one.
I had my thumb on the lower right corner as was told to from a google search and turned the unit on.
I was asked do I want to delete all user data. I said yes.
My Nuvi 2450 rebooted and when it came up all my settings were back to when I bought it. I proceeded to change back to the settings I like as I do like the custom main menu.
I was about to put my POIs back on but looked and they were all still on the unit as was all my favorites. The only thing changed were my settings. Is this correct for a master reset or did I do something else?

EDIT: just noticed something else. I deleted all my trips from trip planner using the unit a few weeks ago. After the reset they are all back in trip planner???

Custom POIs will survive a hard reset. Favorites are sometimes preserved and sometimes lost with the reset, so it's always good to have them backed up in case they're needed.

It sounds like your reset succeeded.

Are

Are you sure you don't have a gpx file somewhere on your unit that contains a copy of your favorites? Normally a reset will delete the favorites/saved places but if you have another file that contains those favorites on the Nuvi they will reappear because the Nuvi finds them on the first reboot and places them in the new current.gpx file that is created.

One way that you can get this extra gpx file which contains your favorites is if you transferred them from another GPS and created a temp.gpx file to get the items from the old device to the new one. If you didn't delete the temp.gpx file after the favorites were created on the new device then a reset would delete your favorites but they would immediately get recreated when the Nuvi rebooted as it finds them in the temp.gpx file.

Master reset

I too just did a Master reset as per sussamb's suggestion.

Did a complete back-up first.

My 2707 is not on the list so I followed the 2709 directions.

Had to go to chose what country and a few other things next when the 2797 restarted..

All my GPX files, POI files and vehicle icons were still there, none were removed.

There is something VERY strange now. In Windows explorer before I had to select "System" and it would show me what's on the Nuvi.

Now I have a folder "Internal storage" to open before I see any GPS content.

WEIRD !!!!!

You can delete them all if you wish, you should definitely though delete temp.gpx.

Current.gpx is simply a one way copy of what's in the inaccessible memory, it contains your favourites etc and is re-created every time you boot your nuvi.

Position.gpx is your last 'parking spot'

Trip planner files are in the .system/Trips folder

A hard reset returns the nuvi to MTP mode. So if you previously changed the mode to MS as you did to see the .system folder, you'll need to change back to MS mode.

I suspect before you'd set it to Mass Storage mode? After a reset it will revert to MTP mode.

Installed on 3 Nuvis (3597, 2495 and 260) with GE without incidents.

Use MapUpdater and installed the map on my Win7 laptop. It went smoothly until the last second. MU flashed a warning message, "failed to install the map" and followed immediately by another "Your map is up to date".

Checked the installation with MapSource and BaseCamp. Everything seems to work fine.
