Map Update

Thanks for the alert!
Downloading now.

Model Nuvi 40 install results: new map files were loaded to SD card and old map files were left in internal memory. With SD card removed, Express said that there wasn't enough space to load to internal memory need an SD card. File sizes for old map and new map were almost the same. Using file explorer, removed old map from internal memory and new map from SD card. Reinstalled SD card in unit and reinstalled map with Garmin Express. Map files are now in internal memory and all is working. First time this has happened for me. Anybody else have this happen?

Thank you

Thank you, updating now.

Garmin Nuvi 2450

Thanks for the Update

Had to change out a 4GB microSD card in a Nuvi 2598 for a larger one after the Garmin Express map update warned that it needed at least 5GB (maximum of 32GB) of storage capacity in my device to increase the internal memory. Formatted a old 16GB card for FAT32 and put it into the Nuvi to proceed with map update.

PS: And remember you can free up space on the computer by removing the previously installed Base Camp map files, the downloaded update map and the installer files. See link for example on how to remove the downloaded map installer files (and firmware files) so on Windows:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/45648?page=2#comment-418223

This map version used approx 4.44GB on the microSD card. The map installer files (including the version to install to the computer) that was downloaded was approx 12.9GB.

They gonna update the junction views this time to account for changes in exit numbers? After the last few updates I'd like to see them finally fix this.

Thank you so much for uploading the large jcv file so quickly for some of us who still need it. Greatly appreciated.

Insufficient Internal Memory

I got error message on my NUVI 2555, that says there is insufficient internal memory.

I have 468 mb internal; memory. I also have a 8 gb micro SD, with 16.9 mb, left.

I have an available 32 GB Micro SD card. Can I replace the existing SD card with the 32GB, or should I delete stuff on the current 8 GB SD?

My current installed map is NA 2025.20

Not too worried, since this is only my spare GPS.

and specific to the nuvi 2555, “ A microSD card with at least 16 GB of space must be used when updating the maps on a device.”. So I would suggest you proceed with the 32 GB card.

I'll try the 32 GB. When I got this, I think it was not as common to find 16GB or bigger.....or I was just cheap.

I found a 16 GB that had been in my old cell phone. Deleted the files, than copied the data from the 8GB that was in my 2555.

Downloaded 2016.10. All is good.

Thanks again

When you got the warning message about not enough storage memory it should have said to insert a memory card with at least a certain amount of free space on it. You would need a larger card than the minimum amount the update needs. You can likely use the 8GB card but might be better to use the 32GB card depending on if your Nuvi model supports smaller sized cards like the 8GB card.

I ran a 4GB card in a Nuvi 2598 for years until this latest update when I put in a 16GB card (smallest one I had on hand) because the 4GB was too small for this map update.

--
Nuvi 2598 | Nuvi 350 | eTrex Vista | eTrex 30x

This must be a bigger map.

Seems most folk are required to use external memory.. even on relatively recent models (DS65). Once I found./inserted a 32mb memory card the installation went with no issues. So now the internal memory is at 95% with 5% sent to my external memory. Also upgraded my spare 2689 with the same readings.
All done on a Windows 7 PC with Garmin Express 7.18.4.0
Will test what’s new tomorrow..

DS65 doesn't need a MicroSD to update

The DS65 has at least 8GB onboard storage. It shouldn't need a MicroSD card for a long while. I know a MicroSD isn't required for this update, as my DS65 does not have one installed and it updated without any issue.

My older devices (nüvi 65LMT, nüvi 3550LM) DO need a MicroSD to store the full map, but both of those devices I believe only had 2 or 4GB onboard storage.

But..

Well... for whatever reason my update would not proceed until I found and installed a SD card. Possibly there was/is some unnecessary junk that could/should have been cleaned up.

My Nuvi 2598 has 8GB (7.05GB) for internal memory. With this map update the total used space of the internal memory is 6.74GB. The update required an additional 4.44GB's on the external microSD card (16GB). This requirement for a external card to store portions of the map updates started several years ago.

Map updated on my DS 55 with no problems. I do have a microSD installed but it only has the speed and redlight camera files on it, nothing else.

.

Thanks for letting me know about the update and the need gor a bigger SD card. Think I'll order 1 on Amazon before I do the update.

Yes, I should have known that, but went based on empirical evidence, i.e. my own senses. I should have also known that saying "at least 8GB" would trigger someone. But it's my fault for not taking the thirty seconds or so and looking at Garmin's spec sheet for the DS65. "At least 8GB" was totally incorrect and for that I deserve to be flogged to within an inch of my life.

The DS65 has 16GB* of storage space, not 8.

I'll see myself out.

Surprised then that my DS65 must have had so much junk that it required external memory. There is nothing "extra" on my DS65. Will have to take a look and see if I can see obvious "junk"

It makes me suspect Garmin is doing a crappy job of file cleanup, or over-writing and wasting loads of legit space.

For sure, check for junk, like items from past updates that should have been deleted during an update but weren't.

From a stock Garmin device, a lot of room can be made by deleting languages you do not speak.

wifi 45 minutes

I just updated my Drivesmart 61 to the new 2026.10 map. In all my years of using Garmin GPS's and updating maps I used wifi for the first time today. It took about 45 minutes.

According to the properties listed on my PC for the DS61:

Internal Storage ... 5.62 GB free of 14.2 GB

Memory Card ... 29.2 GB free of 29.2 GB

It seems most folks use Garmin Express to check for and install updates.

I always used GE for updates, but today I updated my Drivesmart 61 via WiFi.

Format

Does all of the SD cards used in Nuvi GPS units have to be formatted Fat32? And is 16GB the largest size you can use in older gps units? I could have thought that Garmin updated the software in the devices to accept 32GB. It has been a while since I have been into these little devices. Any enlightenment would be appreciated. Finbar

I just swapped a 32Gb card into my 3597 a few days ago before applying this update. The nuvi recognized the card and updated with no errors. 32Gb is considerably more than needed, but it previously had an 8Gb card, and that was approaching half full. It's probably not really necessary, but I always try to keep storage gadgets, whether HDD or SSD or USB device, no more than half full to prevent slowdowns.

As far as file system, I formatted the card as FAT32 in Windows file explorer, per a Garmin support article somewhere. I'm not sure if that was really necessary, as either the nuvi or Garmin Express (not sure which) seemed to reformat the card anyway when the update started. After the update, Windows file explorer now shows the file system as "generic hierarchical", whatever that is.

outstanding

Will get all 3 of the Garmin's tuned up with these new maps.

Large Junction View Files. Do you need them?

Unless I've forgotten, which is entirely possible, the large JCV file is only for nüvi 1100 - 1400 devices with 2GB of storage. If you don't have one of those devices, you don't need the large JCV file. If your device displays split-screen junction views or is an essential-series nüvi that originally came with non-photoreal junction views you can't use this file. I say "originally" because when Garmin upgraded the map coverage on the older essential-series devices, several of them were stripped of their junction views.
