Flakey Lane Assist

rame1012 wrote:

Alright, I've been having a little problem with lane assist that I'm not sure anyone else has been having. ... If you guys could, could you try having your gps approach an intersection that has lane assist and have it calculate the route more than 10 miles away from the intersection and see if you have the same problem. I want to confirm others are having this problem too and it's not just me BEFORE I attempt to contact garmin. Thanks!

I have noticed inconsistent behavior in lane assist. At first I thought it was my bad memory about which intersections have it, but more and more I was sure sometimes I see it and sometimes I don't. Glad to hear it is not just my fuzzy memory.

Gray instead of no icon

MacFlash wrote:

I am not sure the traffic icon issue is totally fixed. It seems that if you get a green icon right away and it goes gray that it will come back again when reception improves. However, it there is no icon at start up, this has happened to me. After about five minutes a gray icon showed up, never seeing a green one. Checking the diagnostics shows it is receiving traffic. Power cycling immediately shows a green icon. So things still are not quite right.

Prior to 4.00 I would not see the icon at all until I had reception and received a traffic update. The icon would turn gray if I lost the signal at some point. What I saw today, instead of no icon I got a gray icon until I was receiving traffic, at which point it turned green. I thought I noticed something different yesterday, but wasn't watching close enough to know for sure. Whether this is consistently the new functionality, and whether it is better or worse I don't know, but if all else is good the fact I get a gray icon instead of no icon before getting reception is fine.

Traffic Icons & 'Love my 755!!!'

MacFlash wrote:

I am not sure the traffic icon issue is totally fixed. <...>

After loading my 4.00 Firmware, I had WebUpdater check for other updates and at the top of the list was "Traffic Icons...". I got my New 755 in February and last check for updates would have been in early May.

I rarely use highways that have Traffic Service, but I did see one warning, I was two blocks from destination and the Traffic Problem was several miles ahead, so I don't know what ti would have done. This was back on FW 3.90 and I recall that the icon was red or orange and that was the only Traffic Icon I've ever seen. I completely bury the cord beneath the panel, but with all the plastic used in Auto Construction, would expect it to still work, I do occasionally see an Ad.

Thanks to a post above, I now see the Jack for an Antenna on the FM Receiver and would just add an Antenna if reception were ever a problem, from what I read about "Traffic Service" it looks like it needs to be developed further to be of much use, who knows what the future holds.

Reference that poster's list of Nuvi 7x5 'features (over someone else's 1490) He forgot to point out that 755 and 765's come with 4 GB of internal Memory compared to the 2 GB included with the 1xxx series).

I agree that the 755 has; by far, more Features that I consider important for my PND and that includes the 37xx series for the time being. Absolutely no doubt that there are a lot of users who will value the much larger screen and double speakers included in the 1490 over Powered Mount, quality of hardware and extra Memory....

I guess that's why GARMIN offers such a great variety of Nuvi's.

I update mine to 4.0. it is working fine

I have updated from 3.9 to 4.0 - So far so good

Touch screen performance definitely improved. Second letter freeze is gone when searching built-in POIs. I have used it on two 80+ mile round trips in last two days. So far so good. Experimented with the unit for about an hour last light expecting to uncover new bugs. Nothing new uncovered. No problems panning maps with finger or stylus.

I like the added feature of changing the color of the current speed when going over the limit, but I wish I could choose another color when driving at night. To my eyes, at night the red text on a dark background is less visible than before.

Recalibrate Again

DorkusNimrod wrote:

I know you said you recalibrated it but do it again a few times & a few different ways and see if it improves. Use the point of semi-hard object (not hard enough to scratch the screen though) and hit the dots precisely, pressing only hard enough to trigger the press.

I tried recalibration again but instead of using my finger I used the stylus from a Palm Treo 600. It worked beautifully. After recalibration I tried using it with the 765T and everything worked; button pressing, panning, etc. Then I tried my finger and the response was terrible. Then I tried tapping the screen using my fingernail and it works fine. For some reason, the touch screen is not responding to my soft finger tip but a sharp object such as a fingernail or stylus works fine. Damned if I know what is going on. Perhaps the touch sensor is not sensitive any more and only responds to forceful presses. I do have to say, 4.00 definitely fixes the button stutter problem. I have had zero issues with that aspect of the device when I can get it to respond.

I submitted a support request to Garmin through their website and I am still waiting for a response. I don't want a refurbished device as a replacement for a less than four month old device. Perhaps it is working the way it is supposed to work now. Strange that my C550 lets me use my finger tips.

2nd replacement

I have been lurking on this site for several months. I'd like to thank everyone on this board. You've saved my sanity more than I can say. Props to DorkusNimrod and others on this board.

The screen issues were going to be my apex. Even the delete button misfired with a letter. Then delete the deletion... what a mess.

I have had the same other issues with the 2nd character freeze, traffic disappears, and reboots.

Already swapped a new 765T for a 2nd replacement with the same issues. Garmin just today was arranging for an RMA to replace the 2nd unit with a 3rd. Thought I'd check this site one last time before preparing to swap one defect for yet another. So glad I did.

The 4.0 update appears to fix the worst issues - the screen misfire and freeze issues. I haven't been able to test anything else yet like traffic.

I don't want to declare mission accomplished prematurely. We know how badly that can go. Anyone else want to post whether software version 4.0 fixed these issues, particularly the traffic issue.

I'm in the same position, getting ready to send in my 2nd replacement for a third, downloaded and installed the 4.0 upgrade, everything seems to work really well, only problem is it takes a little pressure to get a key to respond, after having a htc incredible with it's overly sensitive screen that might not be a problem.

I would be curious to know if you do get the third, if you are able to work the screen with your finger or if you need to use the nail. I am finding that tapping with my nail works fine but it is a far cry from how I remember it working or how I use my iPod Touch 3G.

Capacitive vs. resistive

blake7mstr wrote:

I've noticed after having used a smartphone with a capacitive (multi-touch) screen for a while, that I have more trouble with my C580's resistive touch screen. Capacitive screens pretty much require direct skin contact, but no pressure, while resistive touch screens require some pressure from anything. I think I've honestly just developed a lighter touch since on the smartphone it's necessary to contact as little of the screen as possible to avoid touching adjacent letters.

I agree on that point! There were times I would have hurled it across the road as far as I could have thrown it and let a truck smash it had it not cost so much. The touch screen pressure issue is still annoying but the finger nail tap works well. That may be the way it has to be done. I guess I am spoiled by my iPod Touch 3G.

Greetings from Australia. grin
Hope someone can shed some light. Updated my wife's 765 to v4.00, then purchased a traffic camera subscription for her (Cyclops Australia) to match the one on my 3760. The purchase went through OK (i.e. took my money and appears on myGarmin ready to activate), but won't download from the Mac to the device. Message is that the unit is not compatible, but 765 is listed on the compatible devices and it had the sample file provided with it new. Garmin CS in Australia tried to give me their own camera database instead of solving the problem with Cyclops. Then said they needed to go to the US for any chance of a fix. Wondering if this is a v4.00 firmware issue. Anyone else have the same problem or a resolution?
Thanks and regards

Just updated

Just updated mine! Haven't taken it out on the road yet but at least searching for POI's the second letter doesn't hold things up anymore. Thanks for the heads up on the update.

improved....but

I updated to 4.0, and the touch screen is wonderfully accurate!! I like the way the speed indicator is always red now. When I am stopping tho, it goes back to black. wink

In all seriousness, the day after I did the update, my traffic indicator is either greyed out, or completely dissapears. Yesterday, it was green for about 5 minutes, went to grey, and then dissapeared completely! This is in areas where before the update, it had ALWAYS been green, yellow, or red, and indicated delay times. Has anyone else had this problem with the new 4.0 update??. I am not new to GPSing, I have tons of POIs, alerts, added my voice, routes, etc. Eek! I just now thought about trying a hard reset! Well, I am asking for helpful imput anyways. Am planning a longish road trip in 6 more days and want traffic working again. Thanks, for any advise!!

Unless you are the lead sled dog, the view never changes. I is retard... every day is Saturday! I still use the Garmin 3590 LMT even tho I upgraded to the Garmin 61 LMT. Bigger screen is not always better in my opinion.

Interesting...

Anyway, let me start by welcoming you to the site. I'm not a Mac user, so I won't be a lot of help on the actual mechanics. I do have some questions that might give more insight though.

When you say "won't download to the device" are you certain you have the files on your Mac and you are trying to push them out to the 765?

How are you supposed to do the transfer between the Mac and the 765? Is it using POI Loader? Is there enough space on the 765 to hold the file? Have you successfully transferred files to the 765?

It could be a procedure problem that has been overlooked.

Nuvi 765 Update

Just got my 765 last week where do I get this update and what is the graying out of traffic mean???

Thanks

Cyclops Camera Database Error

Thanks for the welcome Box Car - been lurking for a while and enjoying the site overall. Hard to answer, as I'm not sure where the physical files reside. The 765 is attached by usb and computer is logged onto myGarmin website through the usual web browser mechanism. The download occurs thanks to the Garmin Communicator plug-in, so probably direct from Garmin server to the GPS through the Mac's web interface (that's how it appeared to happen with the 3760). Basically the download process checks the plugin is installed and working, then commences the transfer, then stops because it says the device (which it identifies by model, id no and serial no) is not compatible.
I've had no trouble downloading at other times. I purchased and downloaded the Cyclops camera database for the 3760 only a matter of a few days ago, and it worked perfectly.
Cheers

Sorry, missed that there is more than enough space on the unit. Cyclops only uses about 50kb, and there is at least 850mb available. POI loader is not involved, as it is a direct purchase from the Garmin Shop.

RE: Cyclops Camera Database Error

You have reached the limits of my limited knowledge. I don't use a Mac nor the Cyclops database, so I've reached the limits of my knowledge.

On a more general note though, when you load the database to your 3760, where does it reside? The DB may require a specific folder that is not present on the 765. That's probably my last shot at this.

Re: Cyclops Camera Database Error

Resides in directory POI. Both units have directories POI and also Garmin\POI.
BTW, also forgot to mention the download fails on both Mac and Windows. I have XP loaded on the Mac as a virtual machine in Parallels Desktop. No issue with 64 bit Windows 7 problems using the ancient but seamless XP engine, and I don't have to think to find where things are (everything seems to have been moved on Vista and Windows 7).
Thanks anyway for having a think about it.

765T

Finally got to go on a bit of a trip with my 765 with Ver. 4.0 and all was great. I do not use the traffic functionality on my unit (or the traffic cord). The touchscreen bug is gone, it does seem to take a bit more pressure to have it react but as another member wrote it may have something to do with my heavy use of an iPhone 3GS which requires a light touch of the screen and may be affecting the perceived feel on the 765.

Overall I am now very happy with my 765 and may purchase another for my wife or as a spare.

Do this

gzack wrote:

Just got my 765 last week where do I get this update and what is the graying out of traffic mean???

Thanks

This is more than you asked for, but if you just got the 765, then there are some steps you need to take.

BACKING UP YOUR GPS

STEP 1:
Verify that Windows Explorer displays file extensions and hidden files. In any Windows Explorer window, click on (in the Menu bar) TOOLS > FOLDER OPTIONS. In the Folder Options dialog box that opens, click on the VIEW tab. In the Advanced Settings section, click on the radio button “Show hidden files and folders”. Make sure that the box beside “Hide extensions for known file types” is not checked. Click OK to exit.
STEP 2:
Attach your GPS to your computer with a USB cable. Your PC will show a dialog box for the device. Note the drive letter your PC assigned the device- shown in the upper left corner of the dialog box. One of the options will be to “Open folder to view files”. Take that option.
STEP 3:
Create a new folder on your PC. You could call it something like C:\Garmin Backup 20100605. To create a new folder in your C:\ drive, right click on a blank space in the right pane of Windows Explorer; select NEW > FOLDER and then enter the name of the folder.
STEP 4:
Go to the “Garmin …” drive (let's say it is drive G:\.) Select Drive G:\ in the left pane. Then, click in the right pane of Explorer and do a CNTL-A to select everything. Still in the right pane with everything highlighted, do a CNTL-C to copy everything.
STEP 5:
Navigate back to the folder C:\Garmin Backup 20100605. Click in the right pane and CNTL-V to paste everything.

Now, whatever might happen later during new map updates, etc, you have a backup.

HOW TO GET INFO ON SOFTWARE AND MAP VERSIONS

On a 765, the steps to get the software version are
Tools > Settings > System >About

On a 765, the steps to get the Map versions are
Tools > Settings > Map >Map Info

If your 765 is already running 4.0 then it is up to date and you will not do anything.

Otherwise, Garnin gives instructions on updating as follows:
How do I update the Software in my Garmin device?
Answer:
The preferred way to update the Software in a Garmin device is by using WebUpdater.
WebUpdater is a free application that can be downloaded and installed on your computer. It will guide you through the process of updating the software for your Garmin device. WebUpdater can be run at any time to check and install applicable Software updates in a Garmin device.
Starting at the WebUpdater page: (http://www.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp)
1. Plug your unit into the computer via the USB cable
2. Click on Download under step 1
3. Select the appropriate version of the WebUpdater based on your computer's operating system
4. Click I agree to the above terms and want to proceed to the download page
5. Click Download
6. Select Run when the pop up box appears
7. Select Run if a message appears asking "Do you want to run this software?"
8. Click Next when the WebUpdater installation page appears
9. Check the box to accept the licensing terms and select Next
10. Select Done to complete the WebUpdater download
Once WebUpdater is installed on your computer, select the application, if it does not automatically open, to run the program and follow the prompts.
1. Select Next on the WebUpdater Wizard
2. Select Find Device and Next
3. Select Next to update the unit software on your device and follow the prompts
Once you have run the software updates and updated your device, you will be prompted to search for additional updates. To load any additional updates, check the box next to the specific updates you wish to download. Select anything that relates to firmware, GPS software, traffic, vehicles or voice language relating to the versions you use. Once selected, click next and check the agreement box. At this point the updates will run directly to your Garmin device. Once the update is complete you will see a box showing the downloads and if they were a success. Click finish and unplug your Garmin from the computer to allow the updates to load. Once the update(s) are loaded, your device will return to the normal agreement screen and it will be ready to operate.

still some bugs with Traffic timing

The latest firmware updated a lot of issues on my 765, but I today discovered one bug remains. I've noted that sometimes when traffic changes on my upcoming route, my 765 does not automatically recalculate, and find a better route.

Today, I was driving on a two hour trip (Buffalo to Toronto), and during the trip my 765 registered traffic ahead (6 minute delay). Knowing the route with traffic is notorious for traffic congestion (QEW Eastbound in Burlington) I elected to go another route (407E). Once I went onto the new highway, my 765 recalc'd the route and timing, and I found the new ETA was less than the ETA if I had stayed on the congested highway.

Curiously, the new ETA was 6 minutes faster than the other highway (and the traffic delay on the original, congested highway had a 6 minute delay). I wonder if the 765 is not recalc'ing and taking into account traffic delays on route timing?

One last time for posterity...

It's NOT the GPS, it's the traffic reporting service, y'all. Please try and remember that.

Speed shows red

Took a trip today. The recent update to my 765T seems to be giving me good information.

Whenever, I exceeded the speed limit, my speed number was shown in red, else in black. Of course, the posted speed and the GPS speed limit did not always agree.

I do feel that sometimes I need to press harded on the screen, but maybe it is still a bit of the delay we have previously experiences.

All in all, working well

I love my efellant

Needs to be setable.

The red on the speed is a nice feature but would be much better and more useful if the "Turn Red Speed" was setable. On most Texas highways the traffic runs on average 5 to 10 mph faster than posted. The ability to set the Red Speed using a + or - number (60 mph and set factor of +5 - turns red at 65) would be more useful than than turning red 1 mph over the limit. Seems mind is always red. Oh yes, the red is difficult to read at night.

My nuvi has never actually recalculated on it's own due to traffic unless the delay was like 15 minutes or more. 6 minutes may not have been significant enough to have it automatically recalculate without you doing it on your own.

765 Update and Bluetooth

Does anyone know if this helps correct the Bluetooth problems with this unit?

Bluetooth

There is nothing in the 4.0 change log to indicate updates to the Bluetooth feature other than:
Corrected issue with telephone calls to national POIs.

But Garmin has been known to not give a comprehesive list of changes in the change log. So the only way to know for sure is to try it.

Hit a snag with the update

Sheesh, went through a major issue with installing 4.0 on my 765t... Turned out it was another problem.

Long story short: Installed 4.0 and some voice updates. After booting, entering any address in the "go to" would show 'calculating' to 100% and then the GPS would shut off. Tried hard resets, reloading maps, restoring maps from backups, reloading 4.0, but nothing worked.

Then it hit me... The GPS is turning off when it should be saying 'please drive to highlighted route'. Switched to another voice and all worked fine. Deleted Jill, went to webupdater and reinstalled Jill. Jill now works too but I'm keeping her in the doghouse for a while, she cost me hours in troubleshooting!

I do like the new 4.0, seems to work better with MSN traffic and the touch screen works great.
