Use of Tour Guides?

What exactly is the purpose of Tour Guides? Is it to create a larger area for alerts? I have a nuvi 255W, is it possible to create a Tour Guide or something that will take us on a tour, so to speak? If so, how does that work?

This is fun, I'm going to be hooked pretty soon!

TourGuides

WAASup gave you the link to start with.

Yes, a TourGuide is a radius alert around your POI that any time you enter inside the circle you can create an actual tour, complete with narration and a picture.

Or you can use it as an alert for POIs that are not on the route you are traveling.

With the limited battery charge

I don't understand how this could be useful. Unless someone could do them from within the car.

All of my poi are tourguide.

All of my poi are tourguide. the reason is that when driving, i get an alert of a nearby poi. this is useful if u need a restaurant or gas station. they may not be visible to me because of buildings or trees. Its not an actual tour of a site.

TourGuides are used for several purposes.

You might want to take a look at some of my TourGuide articles which appear on the
GARMIN TRICK, TIPS, HINTS, ETC. website.

The latest article on the subject in on page POI 7 and is titled:

My wife and my wallet

My wife and my wallet want to know whenever we are within a two mile radius of a Traders Joes or a Whole Foods market.

She wants to know whenever we are within a one mile radius of a Steinmart or a TJ Maxx.

Setting up TourGuides allows us to be alerted whenever we're within striking distance of her desired locations, even if we're traveling down a different route.

We do a lot of traveling. Setting up TourGuides for Passport America campgrounds alerts us to a potential cost savings and spot to stop for the night.

POI alerts only alert if they are on the route you are traveling.

A lot of interesting POI's are off your route. Without TourGuides, you'll blow right on by places you want to stop.

Here Here!

The use of the 'TourGuide' is highly useful to me too. Horray for the radius alert.

Tours

I have some experience with some Commercial type audio tours made by an company called "Intellitours".

Here is the link: http://www.intellitours.com/

The company was looking for testers for some of their tours along I-95 and I offered to test them.

I took a trip from Baltimore to the Florida Keys along I-95 and used all of the "Tours" they offer along I-95 for each state.

It's an audio files triggered by a pre-determined POI along I-95 which spews out very interesting history and information about the area you are traveling thru. It kept us all entertained along the way. It looks like they are charging $20 per file/State and I personally think it's a reasonable cost to be entertained on a long trip.

You will need a unit with MP3 player to use Intellitours

My units do not have MP3 players so I was sad to read the following on the Intellitours website:

"Garmin navigators must have an MP3 player and allow Custom POIs. Compatible units include the nüvi 300 and higher, the motorcycle zumo, and the following StreetPilot models: c550, 2730, 2820, 7200, 3500." sad
