Updated to 4.0 and the typing issue seems much improved compared to 3.90, not sure it was as good as the pre 3.90 software which I had downgraded to a few months ago, but much more responsive than 3.90.
I haven't had a chance to use it in actual use to see if the other issues have been improved. So far it appears much better.
Will update after some real world use.

Did it really fixed traffic gray icon problem too?
There is nothing in the change log to indicate that they fixed the traffic signal loss (greying of traffic icon). I don't have traffic coverage where I live, so hopefully someone who does will let us know.

Firmware 3.90 caused problem with the FM traffic updates. Most of the times, the traffic icon would not show up, if it would show up then would turn gray whic menas it was not receiving any traffic updates.
My nuvi 765t's speed indicator now turns red when I go over the posted speed limit with the new 4.0 firmware. The update as a whole so far is awesome. Garmin finally got it together.

This Speed indicator must be for US only because I have not seen it in Canada so far.
Since putting 4.0 on my 755T, Web Updater is no longer giving me false updates on voice files. Is anyone else seeing this change? If you are not familiar with this annoying quirk, DorkusNimrod explains it with a possible workaround in this thread: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/23247
@rookie8155 - I don't think you will see the red speed alert in Canada. It has been a common complaint by many users that the Garmin maps do not show speed limit data in most areas of Canada. So if it doesn't have speed limit data to work with, it can't give alerts when you are driving over the limit.
It is a shame. Garmin did not fix FM traffic issue. After updating my firmware from 3.60, I am not getting traffic updates.
WHatever Garmin do, it is never complete. I am disappointed. I will have to go back to firmware 3.60 to get FM traffic working again. I live in Toronto and I need traffic updates more than anything else.
Cool, just did the software update 4.00. I’ll post my findings tomorrow night. Thanks for the heads up.

The screen issues were going to be my apex. Even the delete button misfired with a letter. Then delete the deletion... what a mess.
I have had the same other issues with the 2nd character freeze, traffic disappears, and reboots.
Already swapped a new 765T for a 2nd replacement with the same issues. Garmin just today was arranging for an RMA to replace the 2nd unit with a 3rd. Thought I'd check this site one last time before preparing to swap one defect for yet another. So glad I did.
The 4.0 update appears to fix the worst issues - the screen misfire and freeze issues. I haven't been able to test anything else yet like traffic.
I don't want to declare mission accomplished prematurely. We know how badly that can go. Anyone else want to post whether software version 4.0 fixed these issues, particularly the traffic issue.
Now when I drive over the posted speed limit my current speed changes to red.
This works quite well in daytime mode but when the display switches to nighttime mode, the red color of the text when you exceed the speed limit is too dark and gets lost in the Speed display's darker nighttime background color. If they lightened the red of the text a bit from red to maybe a dark pink for the nighttime color mode, it would be much more visible but no big deal...at least everything else seems to be fixed (finally).

DorkusNimrod, did Traffic work for you after the firmware 4.0 upgrade? Mine was till gray last night when I tested it.
I updated my 765T this morning and then took on a brief seven mile commute. No problem encountered with it and traffic stayed on but being a short drive that may not be a real test. The screen does appear to be more accurate now.
I have been following this new release with some worries. I am on my fourth 7x5 and this new one came with 3.8 installed on it. It has been working great. I think that I will wait to see if this new update will be bug free. If there is a problem, I don’t think I can backdate it back to 3.8 or 3.6.
I too updated my 765 to 4.0. Didn't go very far. Just might be a good day, but it did seem more timely in realizing I was off course and when announcing turns, although I don't know if there was anything in the update that would have affected those. The speed warning works in that your speed numerals (not the speed limit sign) will turn red. However, they are not red if you switch to the detailed dashboard look by tapping the speed. No errors or delays with typing. Traffic looked about the same for me, although that doesn't mean it was or was not better. Some of the things that people described as issues with 3.90 I'm not sure I was experiencing, except for the delayed second character, of course.
I just updated my unit to v. 4.00 and it scared the heck out of me. After I disconnected I had a blank white screen. After I held the switch to the left for five seconds it rebooted and everything works fine so far. Shortly I'm going on a long trip and will find out.
I followed along wit everyone and, yes, the touch screen is muchly more better now! And, it only took about a year for Garman to finally fix it. I got so tired of my "Recently Found" icon being full of miscellaneous places I had no interest in going to, due to the mis shits.
-- Unless you are the lead sled dog, the view never changes.
I is retard... every day is Saturday! I still use the Garmin 3590 LMT even tho I upgraded to the Garmin 61 LMT. Bigger screen is not always better in my opinion.
The keyboard is now much more accurate but I still have a few seconds of lag time when inputting text. Usually occurs on boot up. Wish they would do something about that. Nothing is drastic but very aggravating.
DorkusNimrod, did Traffic work for you after the firmware 4.0 upgrade? Mine was till gray last night when I tested it.
Seems OK with my testing so far. Maybe the icon is gray because your traffic is actually delayed? To check, enter the GTM Status page:
1. From the moving map page, press the "Speed" data field to enter the Trip Computer with the GTM connected.
2. From the Trip Computer page, press the round speedo dial for ~7 seconds.
3. Press the Next button six times to be on the GTM Status page.
4. Note the values of the bottom-right sections labeled "Last TMC" & "-Count"
Last TMC is the length of time since the last TMC (traffic message channel) update. If this is not being updated on a frequent basis and is stalled for minutes at a time, you should be getting the gray traffic icon.
-Count is the number of TMC message updates since the nuvi was powered on using the GTM unit connected. This should be updating/increasing frequently on a regular basis. Again, if this is stalled for a long length of time (it coincides directly with Last TMC), your traffic icon will be gray.
I'm not sure however what length of time triggers the "Traffic Delayed" state and brings up the grey icon...it may be 5 minutes or so.
Now if/when you have a gray traffic icon and you check the GTM Status and data is indeed being transferred, then something is still wrong.
Well, I finally broke down and bought the nuMaps lifetime upgrade. The $100 gift card from Best Buy kind of moved me along. Anyway, as part of the upgarde process yesterday my firmware was updated to 4.00. And just for the helluvit I ran WebUpdater and uploaded a few fixes that were available from the Gramin site. If 4.00 does everything that everyone says it does, it will just reinforce my opinion that the 765 was one of the best unit Garmin has produced. I've used a couple of the four digit units and I think Garmin took a giant leap back with those.
Fingers crosed that 4.00 is as terrific as we all hope it is. Remember the hassle about this time last year with the 765 firmware??
-- Garmin 765T...Is it about the destination, or is it about the journey?
If 4.00 does everything that everyone says it does, it will just reinforce my opinion that the 765 was one of the best unit Garmin has produced
Agreed. 4.00 seems like it resolves all issues with the unit and it now works great...the way it should have a year and a half ago. It's too bad it took Garmin that long to fix it.
I can't wait to update - I just about chucked the 765T - maybe now that it works properly Garmin will have to reinstate it as a current unit? Oops, almost forgot how they work. That was a very long time.
When I stopped at a truck stop on I5 mid-state CA I took the GPS with me from the car. I set it down for a minute to browse CD's (yeah, I know, but it's a long dull drive).
You guessed it. I forgot it for several minutes. Some honest person turned it into the clerk whereupon some dishonest person must have seen them and claimed it as his.
I realized I had left it as soon as I returned to my car and immediately went back inside where I learned the story.
It seemed my brand new 765T was stolen.
What was my reaction? RELIEF. I was so aggravated by the usability defects that I was glad it was gone. My only regret is that I didn't throw it out the window. I pitied whoever stole it.
Of course, I came to my senses. Tracked down the trucker (yeah, the stop had a record of his gas purchase) who, caught, returned it.
It was quite the story. But my reaction was priceless. Only those struggling with the notorious screen defect issues would understand.
I was so aggravated, Garmin initiated an RMA just yesterday. 4.0 appears to have resolved these issues. Glad I have the unit to run it thru paces.
It now appears that my 765t is working like it should have worked when I bought it 9 months ago! Anyways it good that they finally got a fix for the screen.
-- 2597 Sometimes I wonder..."Why is that Frisbee getting bigger?"...and then, it hits me.

I can't wait to update - I just about chucked the 765T - maybe now that it works properly Garmin will have to reinstate it as a current unit? Oops, almost forgot how they work. That was a very long time.
All is good with the world
I have been working with the 765 for a few hours. I now think that it may be the best NUVI unit that they have prodused.
I have had the NUVI 350, 660. 765, and 1490. My daughter has the 770. My son has a 855.
The 765 with the 4.0 software is the unit to have.
update
Is this an update only for 7xx or 6xx also?
How bad was it?
Here's my story. Sorry, it's a bit long.
Thought I'd share.

Just updated
It now appears that my 765t is working like it should have worked when I bought it 9 months ago! Anyways it good that they finally got a fix for the screen.
2597 Sometimes I wonder..."Why is that Frisbee getting bigger?"...and then, it hits me.
I love this update
After completing 235miles today I’m happy to announce this update is the best yet.
Red lettering appears when you drive over the posted limit.

Grey Icon appeared once http://img228.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=61328_g_122_584lo... however when selecting the grey icon I noticed this http://img144.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=61331_t_122_183lo... (poor reception for five minutes) but was more like two minutes.
Touch screen was my biggest issue and seems to work better then ever on my 755t.
*jus a reminder to always do a hard reset after updating to your software*
