It is a shame. Garmin did not fix FM traffic issue. After updating my firmware from 3.60, I am not getting traffic updates.
WHatever Garmin do, it is never complete. I am disappointed. I will have to go back to firmware 3.60 to get FM traffic working again. I live in Toronto and I need traffic updates more than anything else.
My screen accuracy was my gripe. After a test drive into known congestion, after the update, my traffic still works just fine. I dont recall ever seeing it greayed out, as some have claimed. Then again, I dont really care about the FM traffic alerts that much.

I is retard... every day is Saturday! I still use the Garmin 3590 LMT even tho I upgraded to the Garmin 61 LMT. Bigger screen is not always better in my opinion.
Well I have used the 765T more extensively and the traffic problem definitely seems to be gone. However, I am noticing a problem that may be hardware related. I have to press rather firmly to get a response from the screen and I am having a hard time panning the maps, if I can even get them to do that. It may be a hardware problem with the touch screen but I am not sure. I had started noticing it about two weeks ago but I figured it was just another symptom of 3.90. Now with 4.00 I see this problem a lot more clearly. I hate the thought of having to return it to Garmin for a refurbished unit. I have only had this one just shy of four months and I bought it new. I could have saved some money and bought a refurbished model but I wanted to have a reliable battery and not go through the hassle of getting a map update. Now I may get stuck with one anyhow. I'll contact customer support tomorrow but I am not optimistic.
As I have said on other postings, this is probably my last Garmin.
My touch screen does seem to require more of a firm touch than before. But I don't have any problem panning the map. So if you can't pan the map Aardvark, you may have a hardware problem. I would give Garmin CS a call. Maybe they will give you a replacement.
One odd behavior that I have noticed since putting on 4.0 is that after booting up, it takes a while to display the first map ... 30 seconds or so. It does this even when I have a satellite lock. Once the first map image pops on, everything works better than it ever has before.

I've updated firmware maybe a dozen times for my nuvi 750 and 855 and only needed to do a hard reset once. My thought is that it's not necessary unless you see any of a large number of odd problems that mysteriously pop up shortly after a firmware, map or other update. Note that I have no experience with the 765.
My problem was a complete freezing of my nuvi at random times while travelling with the map displayed following an update. I know this update is long overdue to those of you who have been waiting for the fixes. I haven't had my 765 very long, so I haven't had to deal with them. But I hope this isn't the end of future enhancements and new capabilities because the biggest issues have been resolved.
Looks like they've fixed the dreaded screen calibration issues. Good, the unit was almost unusable with those issues. Taking it out for a trip today, hopefully all's as well as it was with my initial tests, just now. Fingers crossed.
Is it necessary / advisable to do a hard reset after upgrading to 4.0? Is there a benefit to doing so?
I personally find that a hard reset after a software update or software rollback clears any strange anomalies that can occur. Just remember to backup your favorites.
But I hope this isn't the end of future enhancements and new capabilities because the biggest issues have been resolved.
I really doubt they'll be adding future enhancements to the unit...they just finally got it working like it's supposed to be working, six months after the last firmware update. Every enhancement/feature added just causes more potential for bugs...and that's what we *don't* need at this point. Also consider the unit is ~1-1/2 years old now and will likely soon be discontinued.
I somehow feel that this is the final firmware update for the 7x5 series unless some unforeseen issue arises.
Alright, I've been having a little problem with lane assist that I'm not sure anyone else has been having. I posted a forum topic about it a couple of weeks ago, but I wasn't quite sure what the problem was. Now, I have narrowed it down. I was hoping that this problem would go away after the 4.0 firmware was loaded onto my 765t, but it's still there. Here's the problem: Let's say I'm approaching an interstate intersection that is lane assist-enabled, and I get on the interstate 8 miles away from the intersection. At around 3 miles, the lane assist arrows activate and everyting is ok. BUT, let's say I get on this same interstate heading to the same intersection but this time i get on this interstate 15 miles away from the intersection. When I get to around 3 miles again, the lane assist arrows won't activate! When I notice this at around 3 miles, I would stop the route and have it recalculate the route, and sure enough, the lane assist arrows pop right up. It's happened to me when I simulate a route and when I'm actually driving a route. I was wondering if you guys knew about this problem or if it's just my gps. If you guys could, could you try having your gps approach an intersection that has lane assist and have it calculate the route more than 10 miles away from the intersection and see if you have the same problem. I want to confirm others are having this problem too and it's not just me BEFORE I attempt to contact garmin. Thanks!

Has anyone noticed that they need to press harder on the screen after the 4.00 update for the 765T to recognize a "keypress"? On mine it is quite a noticable change.

I didn't notice the above posts. I'll try the screen recal. to see if that helps.
UPDATE
Screen recalibration did seem to help. Thanks DorkusNimrod for the suggestion.
Has anyone noticed that they need to press harder on the screen after the 4.00 update for the 765T to recognize a "keypress"? On mine it is quite a noticable change.
See if you can pan a map. I noticed I am having to press harder and panning is difficult, if not impossible, to do. This device is beginning to really bug me again.
I noticed I am having to press harder and panning is difficult, if not impossible, to do.
Panning seems to be much improved on my unit as well as the touch screen sensitivity and accuracy.
I know you said you recalibrated it but do it again a few times & a few different ways and see if it improves. Use the point of semi-hard object (not hard enough to scratch the screen though) and hit the dots precisely, pressing only hard enough to trigger the press.
If it does not improve, try your finger only, again pressing only hard enough to trigger the press.
Do each way above a few times and check. Multiple recalibrations have helped in the past in my case...
Just an FYI, I did not recalibrate the touchscreen whatsoever after updating from 3.60 to 4.00

You can edit your remarks only until someone responds to it, then the software allows no further changes. I'm glad you didn't change it, it made me laugh.

Saving favorites for reset; Yup, really have to press hard

Thanks for that. Nooby question, how do you back up favorites? Which file is that?
Also, I too notice a def change in screen pressure since the 4,0 update. You really need to press; sometimes it doesn't register and it takes several attempts. But at least it presses the right key, once it presses, that is.
Find the poi.gpi file and copy and paste it to your computer, or use Extra POI Editor to open, then save your faves. Personally, I keep a copy of my faves on my SD card in the POI's so I never have to worry about losing them.
As for the hard presses on the screen, I have to apply a wee bit more pressure with my finger, but not much. Using my fingernail, it requires the same pressure. This leads me to conclude Garmin has changed the way the touch grid activates for more accuracy.

Nuvi 755 and this was more than a month ago with FW 3.90, but I had planned a Route (MapSource) for my wife's trip that had Junction View's in Orlando, ran it in Simulator and after more than 100 miles, the Junction View appeared, could also see it displayed in the 'turn-list' ahead of time. I don't precisely recall the LA Arrows as it was the much rarer JV that I was looking for, but I was letting it run in simulator to assure that her very first trip with the new Nuvi would go well and it worked perfectly for 2k miles for her and her girlfriend.
Just ran the 4.00 Firmware, WebUpdater also offered an icon update for Traffic along with all the Voices that I had deleted plus two for English that I selected, it quickly said it was done.
Gave me a scare when I selected "Eject" and got a Warning that the Nuvi Drive was busy and not to eject, after quite a wait, I just pulled the USB Plug and it successfully Flashed its Firmware. Checked Diagnostic and saw 4.00.
Ran a Route in Simulator and saw the new Red Speed (it has always speeded in simulator, didn't learn it from me as it did it brand new from the box).
All my saved Routes and Favorites were still there, saved and deleted them all and used MapSource to load four Routes and one Favorite for my Wife's road trip this coming weekend.
Tried the 'POI' Search and saw the three second delay of showing letters typed after the first was gone, my Touch Screen had worked fine before and still does.
I had added a Screen Protector after a couple weeks of use and had liked the Touch-Screen a lot better, now I know why.
The new FW update happens after the unit is unplugged from the USB I've noticed. It cycles and then the FW is updated, very similar to the new map update procedure... Is this a new trend with Garmin?
-- nüvi 3790T | Those who make peaceful revolution impossible, will make violent revolution inevitable ~ JFK
The new FW update happens after the unit is unplugged from the USB I've noticed. Is this a new trend with Garmin?
No. The firmware update has been performed this way since the first nuvi 350 was released years ago.
The firmware update consists of:
1. Download the firmware update file from Garmin's server
2. Transfer the downloaded firmware update file (GUPDATE.GCD) to the nuvi
On the next nuvi power cycle, the firmware currently flashed on the unit is compared to the firmware version of GUPDATE.GCD. If the version in GUPDATE.GCD is newer than what's currently flashed on the unit, the nuvi itself updates the firmware using GUPDATE.GCD.
If the firmware contained in GUPDATE.GCD is older than what's currently flashed on the unit, a backdate -may- take place if the nuvi allows it. Some units will block a backdate from taking place if damage will occur to the unit due to backdating a whole version number or more (ex. 4.x down to 3.9 or below).
The PC is only used to download and transfer the firmware update file to the nuvi. All other aspects of the update/backdate are performed by the nuvi itself.
I finally found my nuvi's gspot..with new fw 4.0, everything is better calibrated and I guess it's why that from now on pushing the lower right side to get the hard reset means to find the real lower right side. I use to push anywhere on that side and I was getting the screen prompt. Now I need to get my thumb 45 degrees starting from the right side all the way to the "N" from Garmin logo..
Maybe that's just from my unit side but hope that can help someone..
I have been working with the 765 for a few hours. I now think that it may be the best NUVI unit that they have produced.
I have had the NUVI 350, 660. 765, and 1490. My daughter has the 770. My son has a 855.
The 765 with the 4.0 software is the unit to have.
Obviously that is one persons opinion...I have a 1490T and think it is the best unit. Doesn't have FM transmitter (thank goodness) or MP3 player (don't need it)...Beautiful 5" screen, much better sound and bluetooth, allot quicker and no problems....to each his or her own....I had two 765T's and sent them both back due to lousy performance...

This is how you know if a product sits up top or in the middle or down in the list - the hardware -
7x5 series is one of very few GPS units to come with a powered dock that not only powers the unit, but also has input for external mic for bluetooth. The unit itself is made of much higher quality materials - such as the smooth rubbery back and sides - much better than the glossy plastics on, say 2x5 series.
7x5 series also features an external GPS antenna input. Try installing the 1490T inside a cubby on the dash board - you will have problem with reception.
The included traffic antenna with the 765T also features an input for external FM antenna.

Does recalibrating or resetting help?
With your garmin attached to your computer.
1. Open your garmin drive Example drive (F)
2. In your garmin gps folder find a folder called GPX and copy a file named Current.gpx to your computer.
3. Now rename this file Temp.gpx and copy it to the same location on your new unit.
I noticed the same thing. Hard to find the sweet spot to do a hard reset. I almost gave up as it looked like it could not reset after upgrading to 4.0. It is a tiny spot in the far left corner. hard to find.
(Pretending not to notice how the thread went a little awry. Thanks, Mods for cleaning it up)
I am not sure the traffic icon issue is totally fixed. It seems that if you get a green icon right away and it goes gray that it will come back again when reception improves. However, it there is no icon at start up, this has happened to me. After about five minutes a gray icon showed up, never seeing a green one. Checking the diagnostics shows it is receiving traffic. Power cycling immediately shows a green icon. So things still are not quite right.
Hard reset is fine...
BUT, no more Hard Reset..sorry guys, it don't work anymore...can u confirm this?
The hard reset still works fine under v4.00. I've done it numerous times and it's the same as before.
With the unit off, press/hold bottom-right corner of screen, power unit ON, continue holding the screen until the prompt appears.

Looks like they've fixed the dreaded screen calibration issues. Good, the unit was almost unusable with those issues. Taking it out for a trip today, hopefully all's as well as it was with my initial tests, just now. Fingers crossed.
hardreset
Is it necessary / advisable to do a hard reset after upgrading to 4.0? Is there a benefit to doing so?
I personally find that a hard reset after a software update or software rollback clears any strange anomalies that can occur. Just remember to backup your favorites.

An issue that I've recently discovered
Thanks!

After 4.00 update need to press harder on screen
Has anyone noticed that they need to press harder on the screen after the 4.00 update for the 765T to recognize a "keypress"? On mine it is quite a noticable change.

I didn't notice the above posts. I'll try the screen recal. to see if that helps.
UPDATE
Screen recalibration did seem to help. Thanks DorkusNimrod for the suggestion.

Panning?

See if you can pan a map. I noticed I am having to press harder and panning is difficult, if not impossible, to do. This device is beginning to really bug me again.

I guess this was a typo?
Yes, it was a typo. Suppost to have been "miss hits".
I would change it if I could. Used to be, you could go back and edit your own post. I dont see that option anymore.
You can edit your remarks only until someone responds to it, then the software allows no further changes. I'm glad you didn't change it, it made me laugh.
Not lost anymore. Well, not as it pertains to driving anyway. -Garmin Nuvi 765t, 56 unt Mac user.
Saving favorites for reset; Yup, really have to press hard
I personally find that a hard reset after a software update or software rollback clears any strange anomalies that can occur. Just remember to backup your favorites.
Thanks for that. Nooby question, how do you back up favorites? Which file is that?
Also, I too notice a def change in screen pressure since the 4,0 update. You really need to press; sometimes it doesn't register and it takes several attempts. But at least it presses the right key, once it presses, that is.
Does recalibrating or resetting help?
.

That is my fear. A good device becoming obsolete just when they may have gotten the kinks worked out.

Why fear? The device now works as advertised, and just needs map updates to keep it viable, and reliable. Right?

Had a burp.
Just did a hard reset which at first it would not do. Then it did upon cycling.
It powered on, told me there were updates on my card and asked if I wanted to save them to the device. Before I could answer, the thing went blank.
Thought it bricked. No pulse; no heart beat.
Then after some CPR, wham. Resuscitated and working. Very strange.

The new FW update happens after the unit is unplugged from the USB I've noticed. It cycles and then the FW is updated, very similar to the new map update procedure... Is this a new trend with Garmin?

I've never noticed the nuvi doing a percentage count on screen after a new FW update. It's never shown it before, if memory serves...

For those interested
I finally found my nuvi's gspot..with new fw 4.0, everything is better calibrated and I guess it's why that from now on pushing the lower right side to get the hard reset means to find the real lower right side. I use to push anywhere on that side and I was getting the screen prompt. Now I need to get my thumb 45 degrees starting from the right side all the way to the "N" from Garmin logo..
Maybe that's just from my unit side but hope that can help someone..
?
There are only four corners to the unit. Seriously. 'Lower right' means just that.
You're way over-thinking this.

Obviously....

Reset sweet spot
I noticed the same thing. Hard to find the sweet spot to do a hard reset. I almost gave up as it looked like it could not reset after upgrading to 4.0. It is a tiny spot in the far left corner. hard to find.

traffic icon
I am not sure the traffic icon issue is totally fixed. It seems that if you get a green icon right away and it goes gray that it will come back again when reception improves. However, it there is no icon at start up, this has happened to me. After about five minutes a gray icon showed up, never seeing a green one. Checking the diagnostics shows it is receiving traffic. Power cycling immediately shows a green icon. So things still are not quite right.
