Now available via WebUpdater. Any Guinea pigs?
Changes from version 3.10 to version 4.10:
- Improvement in MAD Maps performance.
- Added Australian traffic support.
- Corrected reboot issue while installing language guide at power up.
- Corrected shutdown issue associated with an active proximity alert or tour guide alert.
- Support for more GPI files.
- Fixed an error in MSN news reports where a report could be lost.

delays
I agree - the lag is definitely time related, not distance related.
For me it is much worse if I am using the mp3 player while I am driving. It seems that it takes an extra 4 or 5 seconds to stop the music and start the navigation voice. Anyone else finding this?
I definitely notice from the various comments and work-arounds that it's sounding like lack of CPU cycles, which is a bad thing. I design embedded processor systems (which the nuvi's are) and when the software guys need to reduce memory usage and/or reduce CPU usage it can take a long time (short of deleting features which can be done if all else fails) and it's hard to do relatively speaking. Now only if they were accidentally "shipping" a debug build (they run slow) or two. There are other things it could be as well (having to do with resource lockouts in the RTOS for instance) but those can be hard to fix (and hard to verify that it's fixed) too. Hopefully it's just an easy bug and an inadvertent "while (1)" being run somewhere.

was told by garmin today that they are replacing a ton of 7xx units and if they cant get them to work as needed they will pull the whole line and replace them with other comperable units! they also stated that the next FW fix should be out in a week!
Everyday is a GREAT day :)
I'll wait.
I canceled my order for a 755t. I want to see what they are doing first. Amazon showed Oct. 1 as an availability date and now it shows 1-2 months. I wonder if they pulled these units for now.

That thread is dealing with the current 7x0 series not the new 7x5 series.
The new series has a much faster CPU, memory and screen refresh so it is a different unit completely.

Well, considering Garmin's current track record for software bugs, I wouldn't be rushing out buying a brand new model. You are just asking for trouble.
Anyone want to place a friendly wager that every new model will have at least one major problem?
7x5
I really hope the problems don't spread to the new units. I agree with both of you above. It's is a new unit and should not be a problem but I'd hate to be out $500 to find out.
Those $179 350 models are looking better all the time.

i hope you are right - i am just hanging on to the 3.0 firmware - the lockups within tourguide areas, and stuttering is beginning to affect my own speach

Unbelievable
I had to send my 750 back to Garmin on an unrelated issue. I had been fortunate enough to have been in the backcountry when 4.0 cameout and thus was forewarned by you folks as to it's pitfalls and did not load it. So even after requesting that they do not send me a unit with 4.0 pre-loaded they did it anyway, I have not had a chance to check it out yet but if it has the lag you all are complaining about I will send it back again and again until they get it right and then sell it and be done with Garmin for good.
I called them
I called Garmin this afternoon. The tech said he had heard of the problem but had no information at all regarding a new firmware update.
Question: Is anybody else experiencing extremely short battery life? I only used my unit a few times previously without it being on the car mount but it worked fine those times. Lately, after the "upgrade" I get maybe 30 - 40 minutes of life before it starts whining about a low battery and wanting to shut itself down.

reducing lag time
Well gang I've been having the same issue as everyone else with the lag time. I've been experimenting and this has worked for me. I used turbo's voice editor and increased the voice rate to 52. This has reduced the lag to where it is no longer noticable for me. Give it a shot if you like till the garmin folks get it fixed.

Relief is on the way!
Got this response on Monday the 29th from Garmin tech support in answer to my complaint of voice lag with 4.10:
There is going to be a 4.2 software release shortly. It is being
released to correct this problem. This is a software issue and not
something actually wrong with your Nuvi. We are hoping the update will be out this week.

I haven't done any testing but I did notice one time that the battery seemed to drain quickly. I suspect that the quick battery drain may be related to the lag problem. Hopefully, when Garmin fixes the lag, the battery will hold the charge longer.

So just what would people do that didn't have a Nuvi 350 or a previous functional unit to fall back on while the Garmin folks have dragged this problem on and on and ......? I'm sure they are more than impressed with the lack of help they have received so far.

Firmware updates are for specific units only and have differing numbers depending on the unit. You can't use firmware updates meant for one unit on another unit.
If you have a functioning unit don't upgrade. That's what screwed up many of us. We upgraded when we didn't need to and got a bad version we are stuck with.

latest FW info from Garmin
Thank you for the email. I have checked and we are coming out with a update next week. The update will fix the voice issue and help with the locking up issue.
In response to the information the Nuvi 760 told to the group is false information. Garmin does not plan on pulling this unit. This unit is still one of our top of the line GPS units. The issue that is happening will be fixed and is not an issue to cause us to pull this line of units.
Thanks again for the email and have a great day

I'll believe it's out when I'm downloading it....
I've been hearing the mantra that "it will be released soon" regarding RIM's OS upgrade for my Blackberry for quite a while now...but with that, there is light at the end of the tunnel that's not another train - it seems they (RIM) are incrementally releasing it for various providers a few at a time each week - I'll be pleased when they get around to mine

I'll try it as soon as it is released. My 760 is not much better than useless the way it is. If you get the impression that I am way beyond being patient, you would be correct. I was patient for well over two months and now I am just honked.
Fed Up ...
I for one am really getting fed up with Garmin's buggy software release then continuous attempts at damage control... Get it right Garmin!!!

4.10
I purchased a 760 and was ready to take it back because the Bluetooth didn't work with my phone. I have a Motorola e815. After downloading 4.10 it works fine now. I need to try the mapping features and will through in my 2 cents later.

Sounds like they have the voice lag fixed!
Received this email on Saturday morning from Garmin and looked back at the 4.00 and 4.10 download release dates and both were on a Monday so my bet is that the new release of 4.xx will be this Monday the 6th.

Rollback
With 7 pages of comments I am still not sure if installing 4.10 will allow you to rollback to a 3.xx version. I was under the impression that by installing 4.0 you were no longer able to rollback to previous versions. Does anyone know if you can rollback after installing 4.10? I was hoping that they at least fixed that issue.
Ray- **Garmin Nuvi760**
No
No, once you install 4.0 or above you cannot roll back to a prior version.
Even Garmin can't roll their refurb units back!!
If they actually fix it, there's no need to rollback

Then again, if they actually fix it, you would have no need to rollback to 3.xx.
Lag
I've noticed about a 1/2 block lag from where I'm actually at to where the gps is at. Other than that everythin else is good.

Those who are wankin about Garmin need to move on. Let the software fix come, apply it, and move on. It's NOT life and death - get over it. Obviously the wankers have never dealt with software. It's not cheese - it's complex...and it CAN be fixed. And if you hosed your unit, you get another one from Garmin via RMA, so BFD. RELAX people!

How's this for an example you should be able to understand. Give me your address. I'll come over to your house and crack the screen on your tv. You'll still be able to use it, but its going to look funny. And I'll eventually get around to replacing the screen for you, when I feel like it.
How would that make you feel?
ad nauseum
There is much truth to exercising the right to complain in our good old USA. This seems to happen ad nauseum these days with the slightest inconveniences; we are up in arms if we are required to think, have a backup plan or be resourceful until the inconvenience passes. There is much truth to what John McCain said we he was quoted as calling us a nation of whiners. I too am somewhat irritated with the firmware bugs but what device have you really used that utilizes a user upgradeable microprocessor that has been without hiccups? Garmin does appear to me to be giving an effort to rectify this so let's deal with it for now. I can deal with the british voice I had to switch to and the .1 mile lag in the meantime.
I suppose this forum gives us an outlet to vent frustrations but can we do it without profanity, name calling and lashing out at each other?
Glass Half empty
Some people's glass is never half full and is always half empty and for some reason, that escapes me, I think they actually enjoy that.

Not yet......
Tuesday morning, 10/7/08. No love yet. Just checked using web updater and there's no new version available at this time. This is kind of like being in Jamaica. Time be time. Soon come, Mon.....
I'll just wait "patiently" for the new version. I figure Garmin will get it right sooner or later and then I'll be happy with my unit again. Until that happens, it will do me no good to be peeved about it. The only thing that will do is to make ME unhappy and I don't need that at all.

I also have my sound off all the time. Glancing at the displayed direction at the top of the nuvi screen is quite enough to guide me. In fact, the interruption in music to tell me where to turn is quite annoying, but hey that's just me (and my wife, and my sons...).
Bought my 760 in May when Costco offered it online at more than 50% off the price at Best Buy. At $380, I jumped on it. We're now 5 months later, and the price I paid hasn't been beaten yet, nor has Costco offered it again at that price.

yes for the routing only, I use my sound when i use my 760 as an mp3 player while at work. I dont know even when i travel out of state, and dont know where im going, i have it muted occasionally glancing at the turn in xx.x miles. yea yea i know everyone will say its so dangerous, but im sure not as bad as people texting or talking on phones or drinking or eating.

Yep, I rely on the nüvi to get me places. I'm HORRIBLE at knowing how to get places and, even when I've been there a few times before, need a map or directions. I can't really see maps well anymore and I had to print out driving directions from Google maps or Mapquest or some such place. Now I let the nüvi tell me where to go and I LOVE IT!!!!
