Now available via WebUpdater. Any Guinea pigs?
Changes from version 3.10 to version 4.10:
- Improvement in MAD Maps performance.
- Added Australian traffic support.
- Corrected reboot issue while installing language guide at power up.
- Corrected shutdown issue associated with an active proximity alert or tour guide alert.
- Support for more GPI files.
- Fixed an error in MSN news reports where a report could be lost.
Excellent thought!
If you backed up your gps the files will be there and you could just copy them to your voice folder. I have all mine from both my 760 and 770...
OMG! I think I probably backed up the entire unit right after I got it. I'll have to check when I get home. If I have the original voice files that came with the unit I'll give those a try. D'Oh! Why didn't I think of this? Probably because I was on the road the entire week staying in a different hotel each night and driving half the day.

Poor battery life now
well, contacted Garmin today, they are sending me a NEW unit, my tanked over the weekend, the battey will not stay charged since the 4.1 runs about 30-40 min. then low battery warning come up, along with a few minor issues i think it is time to get a different unit, i was assured that i WILL GET A NEW UNIT,
will keep all posted once i get it!
I had that issue yesterday. I got around 40 minutes of use on battery and then it kept giving a low battery warning and wasn't really usable.

Any suggestions?
What about not doing updates when you have a unit that is working fine?
Seems I might need/want to register my new 770 one of these days. Seems that the registration process "requires" my unit to be updated.
Phil Hornby recently provided the solution. You have to initiate the process for updating, but you can delete the update file before rebooting and the update will not be completed.
Could you point me to that posting of his? I've searched this thread and did an overall search on his name and maybe I missed it, but I looked a LOT of his postings without finding the article you speak of. Maybe it's only six inches up and too close for me to find.
Thanks

The question is, why do they keep posting new releases before fully testing them? It used to be that software development went through Alpha, Beta, and Gamma releases before going public. Now it's lets rush it out there.

I looked up my nüvi backup files and it seems that I must have copied the "latest and greatest" version of the voice files over my original backups. That's the only thing I can think of since, after deleting the voice files from my nüvi and then copying the backup files from my computer, I still show voice version 1.40 for Jack.
It would be great if someone who has the OLD voice files could make them available to folks here to download so we could roll back to the older voice files that seem to work better. Anybody????

I have the two previous versions of both Jack and Jill from backups that I made. However, my earliest versions (I'm guessing Jack 1.20 and Jill v1.70) are not compatible with nuvi 760 software v3.20 (my current version) and both cause my 760 to crash upon bootup...that's why I'm guessing at the version numbers.
However, my archived Jack v1.30 (current is v1.40) and archived Jill v1.80 (current is v1.90) are both compatible and do work in my limited testing. Note that these are the ONLY languages that I have archived.
If some of you readers would recommend a good file sharing website where I can upload the files to for others to download, I will be happy to do that. I do know of Megaupload.com but I don't have an account yet. This is where I'd like some recommendations on these filesharing websites...I don't want a crapload of spam in return for creating an account.
Note that I have NOT tested if the previous versions fix the stuttering as I am currently using a modified v1.90 Jill with a speech rate of 50 which fixes the stuttering on my unit.

Agree'd!
What would be nice would be if they published any new updates as BETA. Let folks load it if they choose, encourage feedback, and go from there.
Heck! I'm sure there are plenty of folks willing to beta new releases.
Once hammered out, then do a general release.
Heck.. Microsoft does it all the time!

And the latest thing was called VISTA.
It seems as tho lately, 'if it boots, it ships'.

Beta Designator
I wholeheartedly agree with releasing software updates with a "Beta" designator until it is fully tested. That would be a win-win situation for Garmin and their customers. People who choose to be beta testers would simply send their findings to Garmin as feedback instead of as complaints and customers who do not want to unwittingly become a beta tester can wait until the release is fully tested.
Re: Voice updates and voice files
This morning I compared the "Jack file" of backups made over the last several months, these files are from both a nuvi 760 and a nuvi 770. They were files saved when I first received the nuvis and included files that were saved after updates were made. They are all identical binary files.. This leads me to believe that the voice update is a firmware update and has nothing to do with the voice files. I compared the files using a program called examdiff pro which is available as a free trial download.

Same version.........
It seems that, no matter which Jack I install, the unit still tells me it's version 4.0
Either the "older" versions I'm getting my hands on aren't actually older or else the unit thinks that any Jack voice is the newest one.

I went to Daniel British TTS 1.10 that never was updated because I had updated the American English TTS files already and with Daniel 1.10 the lag was gone while using version 4.10 firmware in my 760.

The Jack 1.40 is the latest TTS file version, there never has been a Jack 4.0 TTS version. You must have been looking at the firmware version number instead of the audio version.
If you could find a copy of Jack 1.30 you probably would see a big improvement in the lag problem. I went with British Daniel 1.10 TTS voice because I had not done the latest update on that file and the lag almost completely disappeared. I think that this latest addition of "Changes from version 1.30 to version 1.40: Made compatibility changes for future Garmin products." Is what is causing the lag with the new unit firmwares 4.0 and 4.10
The following is the official complete file version number history from Garmin for American English-Jack (TTS) voice file and it ranges from 1.0 to 1.40:
"Changes from version 1.30 to version 1.40:
Made compatibility changes for future Garmin products.
Changes from version 1.20 to version 1.30:
Fixed a problem where voice was not handling map phonetics correctly.
Changes from version 1.00 to version 1.20:
Added support for reading SMS messages on products that support this.
Added support for mixed routes on products that support this.
Fixed problem where street name was not said when the speak key was pressed in non-routing mode.
Fixed problem where voice would read 'del' as 'Delaware' in street names."

I updated my nuvi 750 to the current 4.10. At work today I tried to save a location and the screen froze up and i wasnt able to save the location. I tried several times to save but the screen froze every time. Any suggestions why this is happening when everything was fine up to this update?

Any suggestions why this is happening when everything was fine up to this update?
Well, there are 5 pages complaining about update 4.10. So maybe 4.10 is the culprit. Unfortunately, Garmin thinks the world is rosey and is pretty much in denial that their updates are causing problems.
At this point you have two options. One, call Garmin and demand a replacement unit that works properly. Two, wait until Garmin releases an update which addresses the problems. (Note that Garmin may never actually release such an update, but one can hope)

I have the same problem with mine except my unit just turns off rather than locking up. When I talked to Garmin support Monday evening, he said they are urgently working on a fix for the lag and keep checking back. Maybe late this week. When I asked about this problem, he was unaware it was there. He asked another tech and neither knew if this was included in the fix, but neither was aware of our problem. They are now.

I had the same thing happen on my C550 after installing the latest 6.60 firmware. I found if I save the location from the map view it freezes but from the normal screen no problem. Also tried on my 760 and did not have any freeze problem with 4.10 firmware.

Thanks for posting these files. Tested Jack 1.30 on my 760 with 4.10 firmware and appears that the navigation prompts are about the same as it was under 3.10 firmware with the Jack 1.40 voice file.
Further update: After doing some more testing with the different TTS voice files I find that the British Daniel 1.10 TTS voice file is still by far the most acurate with voice navigation prompts matching the on screen map turn distance with 4.10 firmware on my 760.

No issues? Agree & disagree. I agree that the 3.0 to 4.1 issues are not present. But, the issues that you have now are the ones that were addressed in subsequent releases up to 3.0. Minor compared to what we are all expereiencing at present until 4.x is released.

THIS is what Garmin has just told, me, i had noticed that the case of my Nuvi 760 was a bit different than the one before, and is seemed to work over and above the last unit, so i called themm , to my surprise i have a unit that has been built in the last 60 days they have made some minor updates to the unit including a better chip set, and case a bit better shock tolerence. from what i see this unit is perfect in everyway possible, all of the functions work flawlessly, dead on voice and map prompts, it boots in less than 8 seconds to a map screen! In my new costco purchased 770, I was looking around in the diagnostic panels last night. I saw that one of the things listed is the circuit board revision number (don't recall the exact phrasing) where mine was listed as "5". Although I only received this within the last week or so the GPS chipset is said in the forums to be of the older builds (with driver 3.0w or something like that). Anyway, the 760 should use the same hardware (should just be the added European maps) so I'm curious what board hardware rev the diagnostics show that they're up to in yours (it's on the first diagnostic page that I recall in the upper left quadrant).

Good for you. I hope these updates trickle down.

I tried my nüvi 760 with American Jack 1.4 today. No joy.
I had the same .2 mile lag that I got with Jack 4.0. I surely do hope Garmin fixes this soon.
I was told by Garmin that the voice versions have nothing to do with the lag problem....they are just voices....said they are working on a fix....

With all due disrespect towards Garmin, you cannot believe anything they tell you with regard to updates/software problems.
Tried New unit
I received my new unit from Garmin and loaded my POI'S yesterday. Then took it for a test run did good had only one lock up around a POI when I was making a detour.
So I called Garmin to register it and ask if I could keep 3.0 and still register the unit. They said no to register the unit it would have to be updated to version 4.1.
I asked what if I have trouble after updating a he said they would replace the unit again.
My Bluetooth will not connect on this unit; it connected to my other one.
So like a dummie I updated it and took it out today for the first part of the trip worked great than about a third of the way it started with the lag time about .1 lag time.
Guest I have to send this one back to.
Time for Garmin to recall all these units and issue a different series that works.
