Now available via WebUpdater. Any Guinea pigs?
Changes from version 3.10 to version 4.10:
- Improvement in MAD Maps performance.
- Added Australian traffic support.
- Corrected reboot issue while installing language guide at power up.
- Corrected shutdown issue associated with an active proximity alert or tour guide alert.
- Support for more GPI files.
- Fixed an error in MSN news reports where a report could be lost.

It's possible to register without updating...
So I called Garmin to register it and ask if I could keep 3.0 and still register the unit. They said no to register the unit it would have to be updated to version 4.1.
Just so you know for next time, all you have to do is delete the file that gets downloaded to the nuvi during the register/update process via WebUpdater. That file is called GUPDATE.GCD. It needs to be deleted from the x:/Garmin folder before the nuvi is booted/restarted. If the file is not on the nuvi, it won't actually update.
You can use this same trick find additional updates, such as voices using WebUpdater without actually updating the firmware.

Diagnostics Panel
In my new costco purchased 770, I was looking around in the diagnostic panels last night. I saw that one of the things listed is the circuit board revision number (don't recall the exact phrasing) where mine was listed as "5". Although I only received this within the last week or so the GPS chipset is said in the forums to be of the older builds (with driver 3.0w or something like that). Anyway, the 760 should use the same hardware (should just be the added European maps) so I'm curious what board hardware rev the diagnostics show that they're up to in yours (it's on the first diagnostic page that I recall in the upper left quadrant).
How do you get to the diagnostics panel?

How do you get to the diagnostics panel?
Press the battery icon for ~7 seconds if running from the battery, or the same area where the battery icon is if running from external power.
Press the "next" button at the bottom-right corner of the screen once to advance to the next page. The PCB Version will be at the top-left of the screen.
Note that after entering this mode, you will have to allow the unit to re-search for satellites on the next power cycle.

Losing Voice Settings
I've noticed lately that I sometimes lose my voice settings. I have it set for Jack but sometimes it doesn't talk. I check the settings and, where the voice should be listed, the button is blank. I go in to change it and it's set for American English (non-TTS) but it doesn't talk at all and the button is blank. I change it back to Jack and the button shows properly and it works until the next time I lose the voice setting. I don't like it at all.

Garmin's Solution
I got a response from Garmin when I reported the lag problem with 4.10. Here's their response:
Thank you for contacting Garmin International.
I would like for you to please perform a software update on the Nuvi to see if it corrects the problem. To do the update, you will need our
WebUpdater program. I have provided you with the link below.
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=931
Please let me know if that does not help.
I'm not really sure how I should respond to this. Or if it's even worth the bother.
???
Are they saying there is an update to the 4.1?
Glenn - Southern MD; SP C330 / Nuvi 750 / Nuvi 265WT
Not worth the bother but it can't hurt to try.
I believe you will get a message saying your software is up to date and no download is necessary. Usually they want you to do a hard reset. Guess they want to tell a different story for awhile. I changed my voice to British Dan and that made my 780 usable again. Have not missed any turns with him and I just returned from a 2500 mile trip to Michigan. Other then the lag using Jack or Jill I have no other issues with 4.10. Bluetooth, and FM transmitter work fine. No problems using 3D navigation. No stuttering from Dan and boot-up time is minimal. Now if they would only come out with a 4.20 update that fixes the American voices I would be all set.

Are they saying there is an update to the 4.1?
His link pointed to WebUpdater, which said my 4.10 software was the most current. Obviously, this answer indicates that the tech did not know what version was current and he just gave me a scripted answer without actually looking into the issue.

I wonder how many of us will jump on the next series of firmware updates after the problems from the 4.xx series are resolved? I've never had a problem in the past updating since I could always roll back the firmware without issue, but now it seems the rules have changed so updater beware!

Here is the answer I received regarding the issues with 4.0 and 4.1. I guess we will just have to wait and be more careful in the future before updating.

I am in the same boat that you are in. I am cautiously optimistic on the next update. I am quite sure that they released the FW to remedy the more serious issues knowing about the lag to appease the masses. IMHO: The lag is something that people could live with and I believe the two phased release was planned due to the time frame involved to resolve all the pending issues.

yet another reply from garmin
Got this today after blasting them via email for 4.1
"Thanks for contacting Garmin Technical Support.
More than likely, the problem you are having with the Nuvi has nothing to
do with the system software. The 4.00 software version had a problem
with Bluetooth updates and was removed once it was learned that the
Bluetooth would be permanently disabled if the user attempted to
backdate the Bluetooth firmware. It sounds more like a problem with
the gps software or hardware or both. If you've had the unit for only a
couple of weeks, I'd strongly recommend returning it to your retailer
for an exchange or refund.
I understand your frustration with the problem that developed with your
Nuvi and I'll give you something to think about before you make a
decision on what to do with your Nuvi. There is no complex software
that is completely flawless whether it's from Microsoft, Apple, Adobe,
etc. Even though the purpose of updates are to enhance a device or
correct problem issues, other unforeseen problems can and sometimes do
arise. That's just the nature of computers.

I take it you would have preferred a different response. Given that there is currently no fix for the problem, exactly what would you have liked him to say? He apologized and gave you the best advice anyone can give you.

Apology??
BB - where exactly in the Garmin response do you see an apology? I just see an email with a lot of excuses.
And you ask what type of response Bear would like. How about an estimated timeframe for the bugs introduced by 4.0.

You are correct -- he didn't apologize -- he showed empathy for bear's frustration. But, no, I didn't ask what type of response Bear would like, I said, "Given that there is currently no fix for the problem, exactly what would you have liked him to say?" I'm sure Garmin's management would have preferred he give the standard company line that they expect it to be fixed quickly, but he gave the best advice possible -- if you can return it, do so before it is too late. Do you think he really has a crystal ball and knowledge of a date when they will come up with a fix, and he is keeping it under wraps?

It appears the customer service reps are clearly out of the loop of what is going on. Some say they know there is a problem yet others say there is nothing wrong. If they do not come out with a fix soon I will be returning my 750. It seems someone at Garmin needs to supervise the customer service reps so they are not sending out different answers.
All I know is I had no problems until I installed 4.0 and then 4.1.

So it has been close to 2 months since the dreaded 4.0 update and still no idea when Garmin would be coming out with a better fix.

That's it in a nutshell. I absolutely loved my nüvi 760 until I installed 4.0. I only installed 4.1 in the hope it would return my unit to proper functionality but, of course, it didn't. Before those "upgrades" the thing worked great.

My 760 function better with 4.10 then it did with 3.10
I have had less problems with 4.10 then I did with 3.00 and 3.10. With the 3.xx versions I was getting lockups and shut downs once in a while but none at all with 4.10. The only thing I had was a .1 mile nav lag with the Jack and Jill voices and after I switched to British Daniel 1.10 the lag was gone.
So at this point I've been running 4.10 since the day it was released and have no problems that cannot wait for the next update. The next update should make all TTS voices work properly again.
From what I can see the only people that truly have a big problem are the ones that did the backdate and lost bluetooth function.

My Sentiments Exactly
I agree completely with RJ. The only issue with my 780 is the American voices Jack and Jill. ALL other features work just fine. As soon as v4.20 comes out, I will jump on it and hope it fixes the American voice lag problem. If not, I will stick with British Hal voice until they do fix it. I never was tempted to try the restore to a previous software version thing because I use the bluetooth feature to much and it would have created a bigger problem then I already had.

I personally think that it is a big problem, when they removed the option to back date to a earlier version without telling users, as has been in the past, especially when you have the problems these versions have created, and it is a problem to have a lag, when you are in a traffic jam and you get instructions to turn after you have passed your turn, and you are in a unfamilar place, and not being able to use all text to speech voices that were factory installed.

4.10 mess
Contacted garmin via e mail about my nuvi 750's unwillingness to save a new location and "locking up" afterwards since the 4.10 ugrade. They told me they have no record of any complaints and that my unit must be bad. news to me? It worked fine up to this point. They suggested a master reset and if that failed..send it in or get a new one.My question is..I have hundreds of work locations saved for easy motoring to and from during the day. Is there any way to drag these to the computer and reinstall them after a reset?

My new 770 has 3.20 in it (anybody know the differences from 3.10 other than "it's an internal version"?), but I use the British Daniel voice. My wife and I just like it better than the American voices, it's more understandable).
Not much lag in 3d mode on my 760
So neither of you experience the voice lags using 3D mode?
I only use the 3D mode running 4.10 on my 760 and I experienced the lag with the Jack 1.40 TTS and Jill 1.90 TTS voices but not with the Daniel 1.10 TTS voice. Daniel works fine and is as easy to understand as Jack if not even easier.
I actually did a test with the 760 running 4.10 and my c550 StreetPilot running 6.60 and with the exact same routes set in both units the 760 was not more than a second behind the c550 with it's nav instructions. The best way to describe it is when the c550 was saying the second word the 760 started the first word. Even at freeway speeds I never have had a nav instruction come to late to make the turn. I wish I would have tried it with 3.10 just to see if and how much difference there is now. For all I know the 760 might have always been a little behind the c550.
I think, from my own tests, the lag is very very small with the British Daniel 1.10 TTS voice. The lag I'm experiencing certainly has not been a problem for me in the more than 2 weeks since I went to 4.10 firmware.

I was really surprised when I first found out that Garmin units could be rolled back to an earlier firmware.
The Garmin GPS was the first piece of electronics that I have had that would allow a firmware rollback.
None of the DVD players, Blu-ray players, Televisions & Cell Phones that I have owned have ever allowed you or were capable of reinstalling a earlier firmware after updating to a new version.
If the lag is a real problem you might want to temporarily switch to the Daniel 1.10 voice. The way I discovered that was some comments people were making on a French forum site that the Europeans didn't seem to be having the same lag problems as the US people and the main difference was they were using different TTS voice files.

I have been using Emily (I find the British accent easier to understand) for quite some time and I am still experiencing a lag. What I noticed is that the lag goes from 0.1 in slow driving to 0.2 m in over 45 MPH driving.

That is all I use is 3D mode and have not missed a turn yet using British Daniel (TTS) as my navigation voice. Not so using American Jack or Jill. Based on your postings it appears that your lag problem is far more severe then others are experiencing with the 4.10 firmware. If you tried the British Daniel 1.10 TTS voice and still were having a large lag then maybe your unit is defective.
My 760 with 4.10 and Jill 1.90 TTS had only a .1 mile lag and that was at it's worst lag, some instructions were right on time.

My analysis indicates
My analysis that I shared much earlier in this thread indicates the voice lag is time related rather than distance related. Also, different voices give different time lags. Therefore, the faster one drives, and/or the voice chosen, the greater the discrepancy. The voice prompt lags that I have observed, when correlated to a distance, are much the same as others have reported. I was able to compare a 750v3.1, 760v4.0, 760v4.1 simultaneously. Prior to the update of my 760 to v4.0, my 750v3.1 and 760 on v3.1 were spot on to each other for voice prompts. After the update to 4.0, I noticed the lag. Since the update to 4.0, I was able acquire another 760 on v 4.1. The two 760v4.x units were spot on to each other in voice prompt tardiness and would correlate anywhere from .1 to .3 miles lag depending on the speed I was traveling. Remember, I was always comparing to the baseline 750v3.1. I am of the opinion that the likelihood of anyone having a hardware problem on top of the issues brought in with v4.x to be relatively small. This is a software problem that MAY be fixed with the next update in mid to late October. As I have opined earlier in this thread, the problems with the v4.0 update run fairly deep and may require a couple of iterations to remedy completely. It may require updates to the base software as well as the individual voice files. Also, Garmin has a process for software development and testing, albeit faulty, that they will follow. That process is schedule driven and, therefore, updates won’t arrive any faster than any other update that has come down the pike (about once per month). Meaning, don’t be too surprised if mid November could be the most realistic time frame for the total fix.
Nuvi 350 vs 760
As I stated previously, my Nuvi 760 has had a lag that makes it useless using TTS voices since day one. I compared my 350 side-by-side with my 760 and the 350 performs like a useful GPS device. The 760, along with the support we have received from Garmin, are both pathetic. This has gone way beyond reasonable.
For the $400-500 purchase price, I expect more, much more, from Garmin.
How fast is everyone driving?
I have been running the 4.10 firmware with Dan 1.10 TTS voice since mid September. I have never one time had the final turn instructions come to late to have any problem making any freeway exit on the route and that is with legal freeway speeds of up to 75mph in my area.
I have never had any instruction that was over .1 miles off. So if some people with the same GPS unit model with the same firmware have stated they had navigation lags that were .2 to .3 miles off then it must have something to do with a hardware varience.

How Garmin Changed History.
It is rumored that Amelia Earhart had a Garmin GPS aboard her flight to Howland Island. If the rumors are true, it would explain everything. Between the two tenths of a mile lag error and the constant stuttering over several thousand miles, she would have missed Howland by a bunch! To cover it all up, Garmin Tech Support blamed Fred Noonan for his failure to do several hard resets along the route.
Now you know the real story.

Perhaps that's what happened in this recent accident.

Voice Lag and Media Player
I agree - the lag is definitely time related, not distance related.
For me it is much worse if I am using the mp3 player while I am driving. It seems that it takes an extra 4 or 5 seconds to stop the music and start the navigation voice. Anyone else finding this?
