I just got a Garmin 200w for Christmas. It's really been an amazing little unit to use so far.
For the pst few years I have been using a Garmin chartplooter on my boat, using Garmin's Blue Charts on micro sd card. I was wondering if there is a way to use the 200w as a back up GPS on my boat, on coastal waters?
backup gps
Sure you can but the maps don't include water features
unless you add a map to the unit that shows what you want it to. The program Map Manipulator allows you to create your own custom maps.
blue..
i have bluecharts loaded on my nuvi 760.
GPS Models : 60CSX w/2GB Kingston (stolen), 32GB Samsung INNOV8 with Garmin Mobile XT(8GB), NUVI 760 w/16GB PSF16GSDHC6 (DIED in 30 days), V (died), Nokia N8 with Garmin Mobile XT(48GB), Blackberry Torch with Google Maps.
Bluecharts
Do you you just install the micro sd card or do you have to "upload" it? Sorry for the dumb questions but I haven't found much on this elsewhere.
The Garmin Bluechart site doesnt list the 200w of course as "compatible".

i uploaded it from mapsource. it shows topographic features in the water (depths), exposed rocks are highlighted in red and wrecks show up as icons. different shades of blue for different depths of water and also read outs of exact depths.
garmin doesnt list anything as compatible, but bluecharts, roads and rec, topo maps off the web, euro/NA/aus/mex/SA maps all fit nicely in the 6GB of available upload space on the nuvi (altho you do run into the hard segment limit if you try to cram world map in there too).

My thought is that if you have Blue Chart on preloaded SD cards, then the nuvi might be suitable as an emergency backup. However, I wouldn't pay for an additional unlock to use Blue Chart on the nuvi since there are limitations. I believe that one of the limitations is that the water depths won't show. And unlocking Blue Chart is very expensive.
