Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Super Walmart discussion thread

Thanks for your herculean efforts compiling this massive file aophiuchus. Here's a few minor errors I found.

The Longitude in Line 3486

is incorrect....it should read (-104.757229)

Line 2073 reads:

Because I make corrections using excel, I added the - sign to the Colorado Springs coordinate, but I did not see the other errors. I ran poi verifier and found no unexpected errors. (San's club & Wal-Marts have several locations at the same coordinates)

And once again thank you for the input...

I have made an effort to make all of the Wal-Mart files uniform. I took the combined file and culled the Supercenter locations from it and made a new Supercenter file using those entries which include store numbers and addresses. I did the same with Sam’s club and Wal-Mart locations although that had been done previously.

I still have the old files if there is a serious error, but I think all is well.

I am still going through a complete list of stores and correcting addresses, adding locations, correcting store types, etc. The list is alphabetical by state, I am up to Iowa…

It gives me something to do while watching the Olympics...

Corrections for this poi.

If I may I would like to ask that prior to submitting corrections, that the current file be downloaded and checked for the correction/addition. Recently I have gotten corrections/additions that are already in the file, particularly additions.

I used one post for the combo file, and the other for the supercenter file.......

Walmart #3867 in Westminster, CO is at the wrong location. There is a new Walmart at 136th and I-25, between Huron and I-25.

On my Garmin, the Walmart address is 200 W. 136th Ave, which makes sense, but is instead plotted much farther west near Lowell, where there is no shopping and only neighborhoods.

The zip code was incorrect which may have created the wrong coordinates. It placed Walmart about 3.5 miles west of the correct location.

You did not provide coordinates and I don't know the area but I corrected the location to the parking lot entrance of a store on the south side of 136th between Huron and I25. Let me know it this is correct... When I geodecoded the address it appeared to be at a vacant lot west of the parking lot that I used so I am not positive that I have the correct coordinates.... Your input helps keep our pois up-to-date…

I checked the latest combined and supercentsr files and that location was included. Have you downloaded the latest update? The phone number wasn't included so I did update that information...

I used the coordinates you gave for store #958, but according to the store locator, yahoo, & google the coordinates should be : 42.734222, -90.438303. Google earth is useless in this instance and the store locator and geodecoders have been incorrect in the past. Can you or someone else double check the coordinates?

I am sorry that i do not know the coordinates (yet) or the adress but there is a new Wal-Mart in Deptford NJ an the Sams Club in Deptford has relocated. I will hopefully obtain the coordinates for both in the near future

While I'm new to this group and POI files in general, I'm an old hand at web and automation. This looks like a pretty good data base application to me, but I'd be interested to see what others thought.

A database could be set up with whatever information was needed. Then search, edit, delete (or archive) functions could be added. Code could be added to try to help match addresses, eliminate duplicates, and etcetera. A select set of users could have access to alter/add data or it could be opened to the community in general.

Several output options could be defined so at the press of a few buttons, you could email yourself the latest complete (or subset) file(s) in the right format.

I would need assistance to learn what problems needed to be solved and who should have maintenance rights, but I would be willing to program and host the web, database, and emailing of files. It would have to be a spare-time project, but it sounds fun and useful.

Does this have merit, or am I all wet?

While reviewing the Wal-Mart/Sam's club poi today I noticed missing phone numbers. When I tried to look-up the phone numbers I found that the first dozen Sam's clubs were actually Super WalMarts. Sooo I guess I'll be working on that for the next few months... The addresses of most locations were the same so if you went to the location you will at least find a WalMart until the corrections can be made...

I just downloaded the combined Wal-mart file. looked at the location of Wal-Mart #951: Hempstead on Yahoo Maps. It is about 2 miles off. I moved the pointer on Yahoo maps to the store and I get the following.

by the way this file was a whole lot closer than the file built into my Garmin C330. That one was was over 10 miles wrong for this Wal-Mart! That is also why I looked this one up. (This is also the Wal-Mart I purchased my Garmin at last year on Black Friday.)

Guess i blew that one, Went looking for Sam's and did not have any luck, all i found was open fields or is was so far off the path that if they did build one where i found would take a gps to get there. Sorry i couldnt help you out but not that familiar with that area.
