Have you checked out the data on this site for boondocking for your own use?

http://www.boondocking.org/

actually i just found that

actually i just found that and saw your post when i came back here to ask for some help on it. =P

it doesn't seem to be in the correct format for the garmin to read.

i messed with in Numbers and tried to load it onto my garmin, but it keeps getting hung up on line 107 and I'm pretty unfamiliar with spreadsheet programs so i'm not sure what to do.

could someone with more knowledge on this please help?

You'll need to either download the GPX file which should be properly formatted.

Or with the CSV file, you will just need to edit the order of the data columns.

Open it in Microsoft Excel. Delete the first column (POI ID). Move the longitude column to be the first column. Move the latitude column to be the second column. Delete all the other column other than the description. Save the file as a Comma Separated Values file.

Thanks

That's great Jim! I was looking for Aviation and airplane. I didn't think to put U.S. in front of it. Also in the listing the second URL must be where his info came from.

gas Stations

It would be great if all the Quick Trip gas stations across the country could be listed. Thanks.

Wamu poi? Oxymoron..

Stu_Pidasso wrote:

I saw a POI listing for BOFA...but have not seen anything for WAMU....sometimes when traveling, I could use a WAMU location.

Why bother? They're currently closing redundant branches and the expected name change will make that poi file obsolete anyway?

Give it 12 mos.

I would be happy to compile this list if nobody else is.
Please contact me with your locations, thanks.

I would like a list of RV friendly businesses along Interstate and State hiways. I know some states have begun programs to add this information to exit signs. The criteria includes amenities like ease of access, parking, turning radius,...

I'd like to see all the Missouri Department of Conservation Areas listed. It would sure save time hand loading them all. I know MDC has a Google Earth kmz file for use on Google Earth. Maybe they could put the data in a csv file for Garmin users.

MDC

Your best bet would be to pose the question to the MDC.
The kmz file you referenced contains tens of thousands of waypoints that define the boundaries of each MDC area. There are multiple areas associated with some of the points of interest. It looks like the MDC chose an arbitrary point near or in the area to define the POI for that area.

I'll gladly take that if it's ok with everyone. Just bear with me as this will be my first attempt, and according to their web site there are 15,000 posts worldwide!

I have >11000 of the locations taken from the American Legion post locator. However, less than half will geocode to the address level mailnly because the address is either incomplete or consists of a PO Box only.

If you would like this file as a starting point, contact me with an e-mail address.

Not sure if this is possible...

I'm in law enforcement and hate having to pull out the jurisdictional map evey time there is a call passed off from one agency to another. Is it possible to add something to the Garmin GPS program that would indicate with jurisdiction (city agency / or county) for Arizona?

Not on the unit

It wouldn't be possible to have the unit tell you if an address was in the next jurisdiction from the address.

If you had the lat/long of the boundaries for every street, it could tell you when you crossed a boundary, but it couldn't tell you if it was in the next jurisdiction. That's what the dispatcher's CAD is supposed to do.

Custom POIs aren't really suited for that particular purpose, but you could go to this site http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/state/az/ and download the "US States & Counties Boundaries" transparent map overlay and load that to your GPS unit.

County centers

County centers

This might be a challenge to do, so does anyone have an idea on how to accomplish it?

Build a database of counties in the US. Why? One reason comes to mind: Say you are traveling cross country and get a weather alert that there is a severe thunder storm warning with large hail or a possible tornado. These NOAA reports often reference counties and unless you know what county you are traveling through or about to enter, you may be headed right into the path of a rough storm.

If the counties were geocoded to the geographical center of each county more or less, one could tell which ones they were in and about to enter per direction of travel.

Maybe one day soon with advances in wireless communications we might have a GPSr with weather radar superimposed on the map so those who travel a lot will have a good heads up on what is ahead besides traffic and construction delays.

Two problems with doing the county centers and NOAA alerts. First off, the alert distance would have to be half the distance from the county center to the farthest county boundary which means for small counties you would get alerted for multiple counties.

Secondly, the NOAA reports are regional like you state but the region is about 40 miles in diameter from the NOAA transmitter sites. For the most part, the report you get from a NOAA alert would be local to that transmitter. Better information on coverage can be found on the NOAA web site at: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/listcov.htm

Are you planning to drive to the sites? As the ISP is P25, the transmissions are digital and probably encrypted.

Peter, Good news about

Peter,

Good news about switchboard: the lats and lons are embedded with each listing. I don't know how accurate they are, but they are there...

I uploaded a file to my website that is almost all of the listings in switchboard. The file is raw and some may be missing, or messed up, but I think it's mostly intact. It's a CSV file with these fields:

Name, Address, City, State, Zip, Lat, Lon

it's at http://sites.google.com/site/raptorbase/

Hope this helps!

PS: I hope to put the program I wrote to automagically get all this to my website soon so that everyone can use it.
