New Zealand POI

Hi,

Do you have all the POIs for the tourist attraction in New Zealand? I'm preparing to there next month smile.
Thanks for your help. mrgreen

Mobile DTV Transmitter Sites

If Mobile DTV takes off, it would be handy to have the locations of Mobile DTV transmitters much like the radio stations. I may have posted this before, but here is a URL for the coverage map.

Gas stations/Convenience stores with free air

My apologies if this has already been mentioned...

How about places where you can get free air to pump up your tires? It's getting harder and harder to find these places.

I know we've all joked about this but they really are charging for air these days.

Not unless you know of a chain that lists on its website if it offers free air. I maintain the Exxon/Mobil/Esso files and they don't state if they offer much of anything but diesel - not even hours.

Keep an eye out for a good deal on a 12v inflator. I bought one years ago on sale for ~$15. It takes up almost no room in the trunk, and it means that you never have to go searching for "air" again. Besides, your tires are supposed to be cold when you check/adjust the pressure, so driving to the service station is going to throw off your readings.

Maid Rite

This file needs updating. I asked Maid-Rite Inc for a list of all locations. They never responded.

Big truck off ramps that are dangerous!

I've seen plenty of different off ramps & some just do not go along with the posted speeds. I know a big truck is supposed to go 10mph below posted, but there are still a few out there that you can get into trouble by doing just that. One in mind is the Westbound coming off the loop southbound I-285 onto the I-20. There is not a ramp speed and you find out real quick that it should be posted at 30mph. There are others out there and newbie truckers would benefit from this tremendously! Finding out the 1st time could be deadly.

Good Idea!

I recall finding several of these unmarked ramps riding my motorcycle. Additionally, some ramps are marked, but such that it is not always easy to bleed off speed.

A few I'd like to see

I'll admit, a fair amount of my interest is in food (yeah, yeah, I'm a bit of a gourmand, or what the late Justin Wilson referred to as a "P-I-G Hawg"...I like good food, what can I say grin)

There's an older Man Vs. Food POI here in need of an update (http://www.poi-factory.com/node/20870) but none yet for the companion show "Amazing Eats" (which focuses less on the competitive gourmandery and more on places that will feed you well and/or food you to death grin).

(This would fit well with some of the other "Awesome Noms" lists we have--from everything from Amish family restaurants and family BBQ places to the famous Ride2Eat database grin)

A transportation-related POI I'd REALLY like to see is one for Megabus, a cheaper (and yet higher-quality) alternative to Greyhound in much of the eastern Midwest and northeastern US and Canada (http://us.megabus.com/BusStops.aspx allows one to explore by stop and at least get a list of stops by city).

Airport Rental Car facilities

Even with an address, finding some are difficult. Cleveland's return facility signage is very poorly marked and the dang TomTom had me going around in circles.

Yup... very good advice although I do have an inflator and know about the cold inflation issue. We got one of those XPower X2 (I think that's what it's called) combo jump start/powered inflators from Costco and it's really quite handy.

Hmmm... now that I've mentioned it, could "cold inflation" be a Wall Street term related to the rising cost of energy after the failure of cold fusion???

Still, I think it would be great to have such a list of locations as I generally prefer to take my business to places that don't want to gouge motorists for air.

Amateur Radio Repeater Update

I was looking at the Amateur Radio Repeater POI Files and they were created in 2008. By any chance does anybody have any interest in updating these?

In case you are in need of current data, here are URLs for some in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

http://www.mrc.gen.mn.us/MN_List.pdf

http://www.wi-repeaters.org/news/09_11listing.pdf

stay fit locations

A currant list of stayfit locations available at some Petro truckstops and Travel Cneters of America would be a great addition smile

Canadian Nissan Dealerships

I would like to see POIs that cover Canadian Nissan dealerships, and while they're at it; why not dealerships for all of North America.

OK can’t take it anymore, time to vent

1) The creator of this thread offered back in June of 2008 to be Mr. POI creator fulfilling everyone’s wishes for their desired POI file.

2) He only managed to create 4 files, the last one on May 2009, for those of you in Rio Linda that is 3 years ago.

3) For all I know this guy dropped off, I have never seen him on-line or people thanking him for files he has done for them.

4) The thread is now 27 pages long and growing, as far as I know none of the people asking had their wishes fulfilled.

5) If the POI file you want is of so much interest to you why not build it yourself instead of relying on someone else to do it for you.

6) I maintain 27 files; I created them for my own interest and use, and then shared them with the people in POI-Factory community that may find the files useful.

7) Many of the files people want are already in the custom POI-Factory database , don’t be lazy and at least do a search before posting a request.

8) I suggest if the file you request others to make is of vital interest to you go ahead and make it yourself or be prepare to wait a long, long time until the OP shows up again.

9) Now I feel much better…

@flaco

I also agree, but I will state some of the requests were fulfilled by others.

Many of the requests IMHO go unfulfilled as the only person wanting the file is the requester. Usually for someone to take on the task of building and then maintaining a file there needs to be a general interest in the file. I learned to build files by both reading some of the FAQs and looking at ones already built. The simplest are the CSV, but someone needs to know where to go to get the coordinates. That takes a little digging, but you will find lots of references to both GPSVisualizer and Extra_POI_Editor. For the newbie, GPSVisualizer is the easiest to use, just cut and paste. Once you get a little adventurous then you graduate to EPE and master its interface. EPE is head and shoulders above GPSVisualizer but it does take a little more effort to learn many of its built-in tools.

Agree with Flaco

I'm not quite sure why I follow this thread, but I agree 100% with the comments made. I do believe the search feature isn't utilized as often as it should be.

Kudos to Flaco

Face it...some people are determined to create POI files and some aren't. If a body needs/wants a specific POI and they can't find it here then they should create it themselves. It's not that hard to do, especially with all the helpful souls on this board ready to offer advice and assistance.

At the least they should start a POI project and try and recruit other members - as was done with the Marriott POI project (and others I'm sure).

Boat launches in Minnesota

I just discovered this site. Fantastic POI's. I was wondering if anyone could make a POI for the boat launch locations in Minnesota.

Why not start a poi?

Since there does not seem to be one then there is generally no interest.

Just a quick question for boaters from one who was back in the 70's.

On lakes that have boat pull up gas, do they still sell premix out of the pumps or is that all gone now? If they do what prices per gallon are they going for around the country now?

what poi's would you like to see on here.

Stu_Pidasso wrote:

I saw a POI listing for BOFA...but have not seen anything for WAMU....sometimes when traveling, I could use a WAMU location.

That to me would really helpful AND being new to POI, havn;t the slightest clue yet where to begin.

wlester67 failed to read my rant I'm going to let him wait for Santa Claus to fullfill his wishes or do a search for him.

Re: POI construction

In my case, it was more a mention of "this would be nice to do" (and I actually AM considering doing a listing for Megabus, as that should be fairly easy to take care of grin)...not so much "blerg, I'm lazy" as "OK, I think this would be neat, does anyone else agree?"

the locations of all outlet malls in the USA along with some type of ranking system.

Tell your wife to sit tight I just sent emanjungle a message with her request, it should be done in no time, check back in a couple years and he will have it ready, ranking and all.

Shut 'er Down?

I would have no problem with this thread being locked. It really has turned into a grab-bag of fairly offhand (and, as noted, often poorly reSEARCHed) requests.

It was started almost 4 years ago and already runs to 27 pages. I'm not too surprised that the poster with the recent request for "Boat launches in Minnesota" was apparently unaware that the exact same request was made in this same thread back in December (page 24).

It should be shut down

In addition to what has been said, the thread could be used for POIs that people would like to see, and for them to receive assistance in creating and maintaining these POIs.

Agree Completely

Shut thisthread down and if someone wants a new poi the search first and then ask for help to build one.

--

ooh NO!

Don't shut her down yet it just beginning to be fun.

This thread reminds me of Christmas time the kids sitting on the mall Santa’s laps and asking the bearded man for what they want.

I agree this particular

I agree this particular thread is getting a little long in the tooth, so I'll go ahead and close it.

There are still requests and suggestions posted under other threads, and I expect that will continue.
