Custom POI's

I'd like to see the transamerica trail on here. http://www.transamtrail.com/about/ The maps located on this site are a little expensive for some folks. Adding the POI's for this trail would make it easier for someone wit ha Garmin Quest II to do this ride on their dualsport. Gary

Free WiFi Locations

For those that keep asking for a list of free locations

Report says free hotspot locations now outnumber paid locations in US
By Lynnette Luna

New data released by mobile media company JiWire, which recorded data from some 315,000 public WiFi locations from May to June, shows that free WiFi hotspots in the U.S. outnumber paid WiFi locations for the first time. JiWire indicated that 55 percent of U.S. locations are now offering free WiFi, which represents a 12.6 percent increase from the first quarter. Not surprisingly, hotels and cafes offer the most free WiFi access, while hotels, cafes and airports continue to be the primary WiFi venues.

WiFi in these venues is like air. It's just expected to be there and mostly for free.

Moreover, Starbucks' move in July to offer free WiFi can be characterized as the last barrier to paid-for WiFi. It did so after McDonald's went free. And it appears a whole host of retailers will use free WiFi to not only offer connectivity to their customers but to help sell products. Sam's Club, for instance, recently announced plans to outfit all of its warehouses with free WiFi, which the company says should help it sell Internet-enabled HDTVs.

This move to free WiFi makes me wonder how long providers like Boingo can continue on a paid subscription model. There are just too many free hotspots popping up. JiWire's report shows an 11 percent increase in other locations, such as universities and transit, which indicates the rapid emergence of new types of locations implementing WiFi as an added service.

Then again, there are those who frequent WiFi hotspots enough to want to pay to have a single sign-in through a company like Boingo. And as mobile operators see hotspots as a strategic asset, both in terms of customer retention and offloading data traffic (for mobile operators), there is a need for an aggregator of sorts to make the move between 3G and WiFi a seamless process. Moving the idea even farther, there could be an opportunity for a WiFi wholesaler of sorts to deploy WiFi optimized for carrier connectivity and in places that are strategic to operators. We could very well see the WiFi aggregator model rise again in a different form.--Lynnette

Thanks,

Any chance of a Chase Bank update?

I know that there's already a Chase POI file, but it doesn't appear to have been updated since before the acquisition of WaMu. Any chance of any update soon? Thanks.

Wi-Fi locations

It would be very helpful if a list of Wi-Fi locations was available.

really?

flinthill wrote:

Is what you want one large POI file for the whole country, too large to maintain and keep current, and that would use an amazing amount of space for locations that you are not likely to ever visit?

When I think about my local area, the number of POIs in such a file would be larger than a POI file of all (outgoing) mail boxes covering the same area, perhaps by a factor of ten or more, and likely to continue to grow. It would even be likely to be larger than a POI file of all pay phones, considering their declining number. Such POI files just would not be realistic to create and maintain on a national or even a state level.

This discussion is a bit funny...

It appears as if you are the only one wanting the files so create your own.

"But I don't know how!"

Start by using an existing file for the format. There are several geocoder programs available.

Hardware Stores (mom and pop) and children's museums.

Thanks for asking! How about?:

Hardware Stores (mom and pop in particular)
Children's museums
Woodworking Stores
Sailboat Stores (like West Marine, etc.)
Paint Stores
Police / Highway Patrol Stations
Emergency Rooms
Gun Ranges
Fishing Hot Spots
Poker Rooms

Cigar shops in the southeast :-)

Does anyone have an up to date list of the nascar race shops in North Carolina?

No Turn On Red

Just today, I came across an intersection that was a NO TURN ON RED. Sometimes, it just doesn't stand out, and I realized this might be a good POI file to make.

All gas stations?

Is there a poi for all gas stations? Would be nice to go into the custom poi's gas stations and have Exxon, Shell, Chevron...etc. Good for people who are selective in where they buy their fuel.

Exxon-Mobil-Esso are already up on the site and I update the file shortly after the first of every month from the website.

Read a two-year-old thread, 19 pages long first, then ask? Wow.

Don't need to read the thread just look at the list of POI's that are in alphabetized order and you can see what is already there to use.

What question I was not responding to a question. I was making a general statement that if people would look for things on the site they wouldn' need to ask as many repeated questions. Nothing more. Also if your referring to the one about PNC OR banks or what ever it was, that came in after I had posted my comment. Have a nice day and if watching football hope the team you like wins. smile

Is it really necessary to make a general statement then? If someone wants to make a suggestion of what POIs they'd like to see, and there already is one, who cares? You can either point them in the right direction, or not. But making a general statement about repeated questions is just as annoying.

And no, I wasn't talking about the PNC bank, I was referring to the previous post about gas stations, since your general comment followed that.

Philly PA and surrounding area schools and church zones

I would very much like to see (with detailed instructions for a POI novice)School and Church zone POI's for 75 miles surrounding Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for my Garmin Nuvi 1490T; as my only traffic citation in the past 2 years was for going 33 miles per hour through a school zone that after 20 years of living here, that I NEVER ever knew existed. And that was on a road that I travel pretty much every day.

Any chance of seeing annual car shows or cruise-ins?

It would seem to me that cruise-ins or car shows would be a natural for a GPS group. Maybe some of the big ones, like the Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit, or the Country Cruize-In in London, Ontario for example, that are big enough with known annual dates and locations.

I wouldn't mind seeing a list for SUM ATM's. These are the ATM's that doesn't charge a fee if you belong to a credit union.

Are you savvy enough to collect the data, and to look up the gps coordinates, either for the entire USA (which would be fantastic) or for one or more states? If you can collect the data it is easy enough to create the final file, many people here will help you. I have a small awk script that I use to produce the files from simple text input, I would be glad to provide you a copy and directions, or run it for you if you collect the data. Getting the data, including coordinates, is the labor intensive part.
