CheckINN Direct POI

A POI for "CheckINN Direct" may not have a good value since it is a member only site and it is not clear as to the basis CheckINN Direct adds or removes hotels from its database.

POI Factory has a variety of hotel POIs (Super 8, Hilton, Ramada, etc.)

Greyhound Bus Stations POI

It's interesting that POI Factory does not have a Greyhound Bus Stations POI. Perhaps because the GPS is for driving and those who use Greyhound Buses don't drive as much.

A Greyhound Bus Stations POI would be of value. Per their website, there are more than 2,400 service locations in North America (excluding Alaska and Hawaii).

Greyhound Bus Stations POI might be relatively easy to compile since Greyhound has compiled a state-by-state list of their available locations.

USA Public Golf Courses POI

Amazingly, there is no USA Public Golf Courses POI. However, we do have:

I would suggest looking in the golf courses POI category for POI files that have a "Last updated" date of April 2010 or May 2010, contacting the person who maintains that POI, and ask them to create USA Public Golf Courses POI.

mahoney created Golf Driving Ranges USA Including Alaska And Hawaii and might be the best bet to create a USA Public Golf Courses POI. He can be reached at

A Romantic Places POI might be difficult to create since what is romantic is subjective. If you know of a book that includes addresses of such places, that might be a viable POI as a POI codification of info from a fixed source.

You can find the POI file here http://www.poi-factory.com/node/2048

Also, something that I've found very useful here is to use the search box at the top of the screen. That search will find discussion threads, POI files, and basically anything on the site that includes your search term.

What a great idea!

swimmika wrote:

If a file is ever started, I'll throw one in. This location is supposedly a great location to view sunsets, scenery, and movie sets: Cattlemen's Steakhouse http://www.cattlemanssteakhouse.com/. While I could probably google maps the LAT/LON, I'll leave that to the smart folks who create files to do it accurately.

It was highlighted in one of the many food shows I watch, so I'm not certain exactly which one (maybe Steak Paradise?). However, it would be one location that includes two of my favs, romance and steaks!

Rides, restrooms, restuarants, etc. lack street addresses that can be converted to GPS coordinates using GPS Visualizer's address locator http://gpsvisualizer.com/geocoder/

To create a "Disneyland Resort Bathrooms POI", for example, someone may need to stand in front of each Disneyland Resort bathroom with their GPS and record the GPS coordinates for use in a "Disneyland Resort Bathrooms POI".

You might be able to find something via Googling "Disneyland Resort Bathrooms". Also see

Government Public Swimming Pools in North America POI

rowit wrote:

There's Columbia Association Swimming Pools, Columbia, MD POI at
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/16068

Googling "Public Swimming Pools in" brings up some lists.

As of Jul 23, 2009, there were approximately 80,000 public swimming pools in California alone. Public here also includes association pools were you need to be part of an association to get into the "public" pool.

To create this POI, someone may need to look for Government registration lists where each Government Public Swimming pool is required to register.

That Would Be Labor Intensive

twix wrote:

How about construction zones?

With map updates more than a year behind, a POI file of construction projects (which usually are merely months long,) would be a labor intensive effort. Adding and subtracting them from the files...

twix wrote:

I think that if the traffic is already reported along a specific stretch of road, then yes, a construction delay is too. But not if the stretch of road isn't already "within" the construction zone.

I've noted this myself just recently along the I-35W in Minneapolis, and am seeing yellow and red zones in the traffic flow in the areas under construction... but those areas were already "watched" before the construction began.

--
The Wizard of Ahhhhhhhs - Earned my Windmill 4/12/2010

I figured it would be labor

I figured it would be labor intensive. I try and avoid construction zones during travel like the plague. It would be super neat-o if construction zones could be computed in, then listed as an avoidance.

If I go to my AAA

If I go to my AAA office and ask for a "Trip Tic", they will tell me where on my route are construction projects that might cause a delay. So, that means that AAA has a comprehensive list.

I am sure that we have enough members to create a fairly complete list of construction projects. All each of us would have to do is observe what is going on in our own area, note construction projects, use google maps to get a geocode and then report that location.

While it is "labor intensive", the labor from each of us is not that great.

What we are after, really, is not the construction near us, but the construction on the way to some destination. That destination is someone's home town.

We could do it.

US Road Construction POI

twix wrote:

Hi twix,

I think AAA gets their construction information from the National Traffic and Road Closure Information website at http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/trafficinfo/index.htm
and only use it in a TripTik if the info is within 30 days of travel.

Rand McNally has Road Construction info at:
http://www.randmcnally.com/rmc/tools/roadConstructionSearch....
which they update about every 15 days.

As I understand it, the POI files are point data files, so I don't know how a three miles stretch of road, for example, could be computed into a POI file and be presented to convey Road Construction info no matter where a GPS receiver is on that road.
