Another reason for updating

Another reason for updating is Garmin's policy:

A product will be deemed to be out of service and its useful life to be ended if no updates have been downloaded for such product for a period of 24 months or more.

.

Waiting still

That's why I always update

That's why I always update 660....I don't want Garmin to make any incorrect decision for me!

This Week?

Many miles to travel next week, some to new locations. This week would be a good time.

Map Update

Called Garmin to see if they had any idea of when 2018.20 is coming out but they were usless in answering the question. Was told it will be out when it's out.

I just got off the phone

I just got off the phone with Garmin. I called to find out when the next map update would be made available. I asked to speak with the 'top dog', but I was told the 'big cheese' could tell me all about what I wanted to know.

Anyway, the USDMLM (U.S. Division Manager of Land Maps) said his staff of 1,400 were delayed somewhat earlier this month because April the giraffe did not give birth for two whole weeks after it was publicly announced that birth was imminent. He said his entire staff was glued to the live video every working minute until the baby giraffe was finally born. Then, another week was wasted as they watched the sweet baby giraffe nursing and playing.

Garmin's USDMLM went on to say that his entire staff has now moved their full attention to monitoring this POI-Factory thread, and when it reaches Page 15 the new map will be rushed to what he called 'Server Ready' status.

Thought everyone would like to know...

Well, to put it simply....

koot wrote:

Can someone explain what a 'paper map' is, and how it is used?

...It is a piece of paper with lines on it. Some are red, some are blue, and some are black. It all depends on the type of road that you are looking at. Upon looking at this piece of paper, you orientate it to the north. This is usually done by turning the map so that the top is actually at the top. If you turn it another way, you could be going south when you should be going north. (My wife always had an issue with that part of reading the map.) Anyway, by utilizing the map in the proper perspective, you may or may not locate where you should be going. I hope this is crystal clear, but at this point, I am not quite sure that I would be able to find my house if I was standing on the sidewalk outside it. The other problem with a paper map map is that it does not announce streets as you approach them. A serious flaw in my humble opinion. If you need any further assistance in the matter, I will be more than happy to assist you in learning to utilize this most important piece of mapography! (New word.) grin

why are maps quarterly? they should be annually.. are new roads being created that fast ?

Yes. And do you really think that map updates only contain roads? 5 restaurants have opened in my neighborhood since the beginning of the year. Google maps already have them. Hopefully Garmin will in the next update or the one after that.

Is it April First? Anyway,

Is it April First?

Anyway, on to Page 5, or 15, or whatever page gets us to the next Map Upgrade!!! I'd love to see Garmin not having Crystal Tree Drive not ending up in a Creek by mistake!!!

In the Dallas/Fort Worth

In the Dallas/Fort Worth area, there is a huge project to widen many of the expressways and provide more tollways. Each Garmin map update is just a little bit better than the last.

With the construction work on 183 from Bedford through Irving to Dallas, there won't be a Garmin update for the next few years that will catch up to that. LOL.. I lived through the rebuild from Fort Worth to Bedford and my GPS almost went into melt down over it. I got so tired of hearing "Recalculating... Recalculating.."

Besides. This is another little bump to.... What is it now? page 5 or page 15?? LOL

the solution to

the solution to "recalculating" is TurboCCC TTSVoiceEditor.
I just deleted it so there is NO notice it just does it and gives me new directions. Your unit must use TTS voice files for it to work.

page 3

Can't wait for page 5 so this post is my part in getting there.

Hmm We do get an update when we get to page 5 right?

Yeah, I agree, quarterly is

Yeah, I agree, quarterly is a bit much.

And I disagree..

Why would quarterly be a bit much? I assume there are teams working continuously on the project. When a segment is done.. post it. Anti virus programs update daily (hourly?) because of a changing landscape.. same with maps. Websites are continuously updated.. The "map" and relative points of interest are just a database after all and require nothing more than a push of key to post.

If.. Garmin changed to a sensible naming convention.. as in year / month / day / hour with a list noting which geographic areas are changed.. folk could update as often as they like.

roads may not change - but speed limits do

There are many times that speed limits are changed - maps are out-of-date in many locations

My small contribution to adding to this silly game

But.. an opportunity to ask a totally off topic question(s)
1. Why does this thread start at the beginning instead of at the most recent unread posts??
2. Why.. do I need to log in periodically.. Most times (for weeks on end) I am logged in automatically.. then for no reason I need to log in again..
