Maybe not in your neighbourhood, but then again, North America is a fairly big place. Right?

Map Updates

And why do people live and die by map updates? Surely roads and highways and freeways don't change that often. It's very rare here. And I really don't care about new tracts of homes myself. I'm never driving into those. I'm sure there are corrections but I've never seen one in my travels. In fact, all errors I've noticed continue to this day, 10+ years later. Even my own house is in error despite reporting it many years ago.

There is a glaring error in

There is a glaring error in the maps that I reported last year to Garmin, and they said it is slated for update..... that I'm hoping to see fixed in last (but didn't happen) and Hopefully the next map update....

The road we are on shows two exits to an adjacent road, but, the upper exit simply does not exist (and it hasn't for 20 some years).... So this is a long term error that has not been fixed.... Who knows how may other of this sort of thing exists!

If you follow the GPS and attempt to use the upper exit, you will end up in a stream....The private bridge across this stream was dynamited many, many years ago during a feud between a farmer and a developer, but Garmin still shows it on the maps!

So, Yes! I am awaiting the next map update with a personal stake in the revised maps....

Hoping..

I think most of us hope the next update fixes the problems created by the last. New roads are fine.. but fix the old stuff as well.

The notification bar that shows the road / exit ahead in the Edmonton Alberta area misses many of the major exits.. this is fine for those that know the area.. but I pity a newcomer using the Garmin to properly identify the proper next exit(s).

And.. if the area I know is bad.. what about the areas I don't know.. how much trust can one put in the Garmin algorithms or maps?

Many changes.

For example, Cedar Rapids IA is in the process of changing all their downtown one way streets to two way. This of course has significant impact on routing and safely navigating through the city, so the sooner Garmin and Here can update the map the better.

New Maps

I still can't understand the naming convention that Garmin uses.

Saying a version is a "2018" something, when it's 2017 just sort of baffles me.

I am getting...

the beer and the chips ready for the wait.

re: new roads being created that fast

Roads are not created that fast but speed limits change frequently in some parts. Where roads are created and closed, Garmin's carrier is way behind.

Canada

Leaving for Montana, Canada, and Alaska in about two months. Should likely have new maps with (hopefully) properly updated info. Never driven around in Canada before.

you're going to Ontario, remember to never use your GPS or phone while driving, not even at a stoplight, very strict....you must be pulled over to even use your GPS.

Anyone remember where Garmin stores the map temporarily, I went through this before and thought I had noted it. It eats up like 3.8 gb of SSD space, not good....

LOL, stand here , wait...

It's about POI Updates

Roads may not require frequent updates, but POIs for restaurants, fuel and attractions do need updates frequently. Nothing is so frustrating as being in a deserted area with the fuel gauge on empty and the POI fuel stop is out of business. With a 6 gallon tank on my Harley and 40-45 mpg, fuel stops can be a fine line.

HERE maps still shows the corrections we worked on together for the road you are talking about. Hopefully, this map update will have the correction. Remember it takes "about two map cycles" for changes made in Map Creator to get to Garmin. We corrected it on 11/12/16, so it's possible it's on this next map update, but it's also possible it's not. Fingers crossed!

(Even more importantly, they need to update the new interchange at US-74 and NC-209/Crabtree Rd!)

It's more than that

If map updates happened only annually, there would be no point in having a Garmin. You might as well have a cell phone with maps updated all of the time because your own unit would be woefully outdated most of the time.
Firstly, a lot of roads that have been there for awhile still are not on maps. These roads need to be added to have a complete up to date map.
Secondly, it's not only roads, but the *attributes* of those roads that are important as well, such as address ranges, speed limit, direction, and impedance values (impedance values are absolutely critical in determining shortest path on a route).
Thirdly, it depends on your area. The people in Charlotte, NC shouldn't have had to wait a year for the GPS to know about the full I-485 loop around time. Even the three or so months of the new interstate section being open and not on the Garmin maps was extremely irritating. For an even more recent example, in Gray, GA, there is a new bypass around time that has been open since December 2016. It is not on 2018.10, but I expect it will be on 2018.20. This route impacts *anyone* traveling between Macon and northeast Georgia. It would be ridiculous to have to wait up to a year for these updates. (Also, truckers and Dezl owners need highway updates ASAP!)

I feel lucky

any map correctivons I make on tomtom, are on MY device immediately, even new or deleted roads, and I get daily alterations from others
just have to choose trust level
"verified tomtom"
"many users"
"some Users"
"one user"
I live in rural nova scotia, and middle of nowhere Northern territory, I chose "one user"

2018?

Just 2018? I can't wait for 2023 wink Why don't they just call it 2017.5 or 2017.6 instead of 2018.x ?

Soon?

Any time this week would be good.

I haven't slept since the thread was started. I'm so excited!
