Nasty bug/securiy enhancement introduced with Windows 11 25H2

I'm a mac user now but my daughter and her husband hit this nasty bug/securiy enhancement after they updated to Windows 11 25H2. They were unable to preview or open pdf files downloaded from the internet using File Explorer. You get the message "The file you are attempting to preview could harm your computer. If you trust the file and the source you received it from, open it to view its contents".

To be able to view the pdf you have to right click on the file bring to open the properties menu, check the "Unblock" checkbox and then click ok. They were saying this also affects all pdfs they downloaded prior to updating to Windows 11 25H2.

To unblock all files you can run a command like this from a powershell command prompt:

Get-ChildItem "full path of folder" -Recurse | Unblock-File

I created a windows shortcut on their Desktops to run that command in their Documents and Downloads folders.

PDF files

I jus open several pdf files with no problems. Must be only certain units with the problem

I love it…

truth

Yeah but it's true, malicious code can run when a PDF is opened. I had the ""The file you are attempting to preview could harm your computer. If you trust the file and the source you received it from, open it to view its contents"." message long before this past update was downloaded from time to time.

one of the test subjects at work to go to 11, and had lots of problems.

I have one of the "older" laptops with only 8 gb ram.

Of the 256 gb ssd, I showed only 45 gb left, with programs consuming 105 gb. IT asked me just what the heck are you saving locally?

NOTHING.

They couldn't find where the space was consumed, and I could not upgrade. It would fail, and each time I clicked install, another 5.5 gb was consumed.

They then had the program force the upgrade to all non compliant mutants like me, and my machine began upgrading despite not having enough space. While I was in the middle of the work day and doing something. Just began restarting.

It upgraded successfully, and now 90-95% of my ram is consumed lol

Good thing I don't do anything all day long so having a laptop running at 90%+ ram consumed is ok haha

In many scenarios, it's not advisable to be part of the first group (this is an enterprise environment, likely home is perfectly fine).

The end.

Any IT personal worth their salt should be able to locate what's taking up space.

IMO any major OS update is best done from scratch.

Check Task Manager

There is a bug in a Windows 11 update from a few days ago that might be causing you issue with Ram being used excessively. See https://www.windowslatest.com/2025/11/01/microsoft-confirms-...

Windows 10

Still running Windows 10. Computer keeps nagging me to "upgrade" to Windows 11. Probably give in and do it one of these days but I have some programs that I am positive won't work with 11.

Another Win 11 bug

Microsoft has already confirmed the problem: “After you install KB5064081, some videos and games might be unexpectedly red.”

I was reluctant as well, got the nags about the upgrade to 11, and like you thought I had stuff that wouldn't work anymore. I gave in about a month ago and everything still works.

Noticed Something

When copying over files a box saying some properties cannot be copied over yes or no I just say yes but don't see anything that looks different from any other file.

Old Programs...

I'm running a password keeper that was made for Windows 95. It still works with Windows 10 but I would bet money it won't survive the Windows 11 compatibility checks.

Windows 11 fix for the Task Manger issue

If the issue was the Task Manager problem, then a fix has been released. For Windows 11, KB5068861 fixes a serious bug with Task Manager. This update addresses an issue where closing Task Manager with the Close button didn’t fully end the process, leaving background instances that could slow performance over time. This might occur after installing KB5067036.

This laptop is still on

This laptop is still on 23h2, desktop on win10 with most recent updates from sometime in 2020. I need to redo the desktop sometime this winter. Will probably put win10 ent iot LTSC and call it a day. I have zero interest in anything win11 really offers.

As for turbo tax, will just set up a vm with some earlier win11 build (22 23h2, depending what iso i have on hand).
