How can use built-in icons for my POI files?

My nuvi 250W has a set of icons that can be assigned to Favourites and I would like to use some of these for my POI files, but I can't find them as bmp files on the unit.

Is there a way to use these built in icons for the POI files that I load with POI Loader?

Thanks,

.

No, you can't use the built in icons for your Custom POIs. But if you check out the icons listing here on the site, you might find some that you might be able to use instead.

Work around to use built in icons on custom POIs

I have looked at pretty much all the icons in the library, but there were some of the built ins that I still liked (shoping cart, theater faces, shopping bag, little car, etc.) and didn't find a good equivalent, so I just tried the following work around and worked.

I enabled the "Screen shot" feature under ../Settings/Display/Screen Shot (Enable), then I went to favorites/Edit/ChangeMapSymbol and took the "screen shot", copied the file from /Garmin/scrn to get the "screen shot" (####.bmp) and edited it to crop and resize the icons, a few steps, but worked. I am still trying to figure out the transparency of the background.

By the way, I am curious of what icons do people use for your "Speed alerts".

ICONS

I have a c550. Do not know what a GPS"r is. I followed, exactly, the system by Motorcycle Mama of 6/21/2007. The icons do not load. Am I trying to use a Garmin that will not accept icons?

The 'r' just stands for

The 'r' just stands for receiver. GPS receiver.

The c550 should accept the icons.

Download or create your icon. For simplicity, be sure that in BMP format and that it is 24x24 or smaller in size.

Name your icon EXACTLY the same name as your POI file except for the file extension (the three letters after the dot).

For example, if your POI file was "Dunkin_Donuts.csv", you would rename the icon for that POI as "Dunkin_Donuts.bmp".

NOTE: The default setting on many computers is to "hide file extensions for known file types". If this is the case on your computer, make sure that you change the setting in your file browser so that you can see the extensions to ensure that you don't add double file extensions. (ie Dunkin_Donuts.bmp.bmp which won't work.)

Be sure you don't have any extra spaces or underlines in one file name that aren't in the other.

You would then place both files in the same folder on your computer. (Not on your GPS unit.)

Then run POI Loader and the icon will load with the file.

Then on your GPS unit, go to Where to? > Extras > Custom POIs and select a location for which you have loaded an icon. Zoom ALL THE WAY IN on your map until you see them. On many units, you need to be zoomed in to 300 feet or closer in order for them to show on the map.

more on icons

Even zoomed all the way in. All I get is a race-track winning flag.

and more icons

I tried to load manually. No bmp's showed up to be loaded.

.

If you are getting the checkered flag, then you must be selecting Go! Don't do that. Just select the location and select "View Map" or "Map" to see it on the screen. Then zoom in.

I'm not sure what you mean by "I tried to load manually. No bmp's showed up to be loaded." Are you saying that when you run POI Loader in Manual Mode, you don't "see" the icons to load them?

Well, you won't see them there, but if they are in the proper folder, named properly, etc., they will load with the proper POI file.

thanx

When I used map instead of go, as you suggested, I got the icon. One more question before I let you help other users: When I select a poi and bring it up on my screen by using map, will I get direction from my current location?

.

I don't believe that the map screen in this instance would show you the direction from your current location, but the menu list of the locations (before you select an individual location) will show you the distance and direction (as the crow flies) of the locations on the list.

If you select Go! from the map screen, you will get routed directions to the POI location from your current location.

Looking for mountain icons...

I've just started today adding POIs to my Garmin.

I've added Colorado 14'ers and Colorado HW passes. Now I'm looking for appropriate icons for those POIs. An icon of some mountains, and some sort of mountain pass icon, like two brackets perhaps (thinking of a map legend).

I've looked at the icons here, but nothing jumps out at me.

I thank everyone for all of the hard work! I hope add a few POIs myself soon (have been looking for Shell stations).

I once had this labeled as a horse trailer but was told that that was the wrong title.

Miss POI

Zip?

I'm just getting started with POIs and it took a long time to go through all the files listed to pick out which I wanted.

It would have been much faster if they were all included in a single zip file. Then I'd unzip into a folder and set the view to thumbnails as see them laid out. As for zip size, I got 59 of them totaling 160KB which is almost nothing.

I'm glad to have them zipped or not so this isn't a complaint, just a suggestion for improvement.

--
Earle

>

but.....if you downloaded the complete zip file of all POI's here, when you open them, you still have to pick the ones you want. Time spent one way or another. smile

--
******************Garmin Nüvi 1300T****************Member 6523*******************

True, but....

I'm not trying to stir anything up or be argumentative, as you all are a terrific group.

The point I was making is that I unzip the icons in an icon folder then set the view to thumbnail and they are all displayed with only a single download and a single extract.

The web method requires clicking on each one then wait the second page to open, then if you want it you download that one. Do that 60 times in one sitting and you start thinking of better ways.

I just prefer something like the vehicle icons that have a zip. However, like I said, it's not huge and meant only as a suggestion for someday down the road.

Map Icons

Are there Map Icons available for "Favorites"? Not the POI Icons, but the ones that come with the GPS. I couldn't find any on the Garmin site and I may not be searching correctly on POI Factory.

Michael's Icon?

Could somebody please make me a Michaels's icon for a POI file? I'm working on a Michael's file. I'm doing one for Ontario, Canada and maybe New York state or just Western New York.

I already have the mp3 file and tried getting a bmp but it wasn't working out so great.

I'd appreciate it if somebody could make one for me.

Thanks!

You have to use Garmin's xImage program to add custom icons to MapSource.

Here are some threads on the geocaching forums about it.

The Michael's craft store logo is not one that looks good resized to 24X5 pixels. You may want to use a generic icon for that file.

Miss POI

Thanks!

Ya, I tried messing with a couple of them, including a large image but it looked awful. LOL

Thanks!

How then would I go about using a generic icon for the file so that it marks the Michaels in the custom POI?

Thanks,

This was asked some time ago. As MM said you can't use the built-in icons, but here's a link to some GPSr type icons. Resize them to 24x24 and you're in business.

sewisdom - Drive carefully. The life you save... may be someone who owes you money!

yes you can

rgaylortx wrote:

You can go the xImage route as linked by MM.

I think that is the long way though. You can do it without xImage.

Within Mapsource, there are 8 custom bmp images already, which are just blue circles. [my documents/my garmin/custom waypoint symbols] You can edit/replace these "custom" images. You can have up to 64 of these custom bmps numbered from 000.bmp to 063.bmp

Open one of the existing bmp's in an image editor, edit, and save back to the same location. Or save another bmp to the "my garmin/custom waypoint symbols" file. Just remember, you'll need to name (rename) it 000.bmp through 63.bmp

All of this is in the mapsource help file..under Waypoints ► Symbols ► Using Customized Waypoint Symbols.

Hope this helps
