BMP Icon Discussion

nevermind. I found the answer in another message board. (I couldn't find it here)

Anyway, what you have to do is save the .bmp file as an 8-bit (256) color file. Edit the color palate to make one of the colors Magenta (255, 0, 255). Any Magenta pixels will display as transparent on the Garmin.

This will help the custom icons take up less display room on the map so that the roads and other items are easier to see.

If you search for "transparent background" or "transparency", you should find some information. You need to set the background color to magenta. For a transparent background, set the background as the 255,0,255 color.

If you read long enough you eventually find the answers. But I tried to streamline my icons using the magenta thing (255,0,255) with no luck. The magenta shows up on my c550. Any ideas?

Bown was right. My photo program wasn't obvious as to what the default resolution was. Once I found that menu, it was just a matter setting it to 256. So nevermind. TNX

I've been building some POI files and I've been saving all of the icons I've download over the past several months from about every site I was able to dig up. Is there a way I can upload them to someone so they can be made avaliable if anyone wants them? I know some of them are all ready listed in POI Factory's icon list, but there are also quit a few I have accumulated from other sites.

New to the site and just purchased a Magellan 4040. Really enjoying the flexibility of POIs. Does anyone know if you can create custom icons on Magellan GPS devices? If so, how?

You can create custom categories, but you have to use their built-in images, which appear to be embedded in the POI Editor code (executable).

I have a signal light BMP I created that I use for my photo red light POIs that I like the size and looks on my Zumo 550. I dont know how to up load it to see if it is a BMP that you would like to add to the BMP Library. Looking around this sight it is not intuitively oblivious as how to submit a BMP.

I downloaded the Harley Davidson icon and it happens to be saved in my documents. How do you get it from there to my Garmin Quest 2? I have downloaded all the Harley dealers ok but I'm lost with the Icon. Thanks

I notice on the Zoom in and out buttons of the map display screen that it is possible for the nuvi to have a gradient transparency to give it that 3D look and still maintain a see-through transparency. Does anyone know how to do that? The technique quoted above is just a "solid" transparency. This technique would enable a POI icon to take on shading and give it a less flat look.

I downloaded the Poi file that I created, it looks like only the cvs files showed up in Extras, Custom POIs (Garmin nuvi 650), but I can't find the downloaded icons (the names weren't changed when saved or downloaded). Did I do something wrong? Thanks!

Did you use POI Loader to load the Harley Dealers?

Check to be sure that you put the BMP icon in the same folder as the POI file and double (triple) check to be sure that the filenames are identical except for the file extension. Commonly, the file extensions are hidden on peoples computers, so make sure they aren't hidden and check for double extensions such as Harley_Dealers.bmp.bmp.

You might need to rename the icons to match the POI file.

I just purchased a Garmin Nuvi 650 and I'm really loving it. I have no idea how to make icons but would love to have some made.

I have a lot of pet stores, vets, dog groomers, dog parks, etc, addresses stored and would like to see some pet icons. For example: a dog (a chihuahua and a labrador), a bird, a horse, a bandaged dog, a soapy dog, a dog bone, etc. Is there anyone that could make some of these? Thanks everyone!

I think I understand now . . . you have to have a POI to go with the identically named icon in order to upload them, right?

The Bureau of Land Management (a U.S. government public land agency) offers a set of International Recreation Symbols that could be used to generate icons.

There are about 150 symbols that depict camping, boating, golfing, trails, wildlife viewing, and a lot more.

I have seen the speed limit icons for 30-60mph but am interested in metric speed limit icons. I would appreciate icons from 50 km/h to 110 km/h.

I have them, but haven't had a second to load them up today, I will work on it tomorrow. Wednesday is usually dedicated to the red light camera updates.

I've put together 51 state flags and 245 countries. Others might find these useful. How can I upload them?

I usually don't accept BMP Icons unless there are files for them to be attached to. What files would you link these to?

There probably won't be any more BMP Icons added to the site before December 27th. I will also not be doing any research on the red light camera file until the 27th.

Now that I've got some custom pois entered, I'm playing with custom icons. I've learned to experiment with small files as I learn so here is what I've done so far.

I put a Dairy Queen .csv file and a DQ .bmp file into one folder. I then loaded that folder containing both files with POI Loader. THe icons do not load for some reason.

I can successfully load DQ.csv and POI Loader tells me I've loaded 4670 POI. When I add the .bmp file POI Loader gives me the same message that I've successfully loaded 4670 POI. Both the .bmp and .csv files have exactly the same name except for the extension. The .bmp is 16x16 pixels.

Any ideas?

rvjimzhr, double check for double file extensions.

Be sure when you are viewing the files on your computer that your file browser isn't set to hide file extensions. Then check to be sure you didn't name the file DQ.bmp.bmp.

Having read earlier posts here, that, one of the first things I did. I show all file extensions and there are no doubles. What now?

Well, I don't know much about the Quest2, but assuming that if it supports Custom POIs, that it will also support Custom Icons, select a POI location that you have loaded on your GPS unit and zoom all the way in on the map.

Do you see the icon or just the gray dot?

If you only see the gray dot, then I would check (again) to be sure that the files are named (spelled the same, observe the same case, no double periods, no extra spaces) and located properly (ie in the same folder as each other).

Otherwise, I'm stumped. The only other thing I'd say is to re-download everything and try reloading it all.

I guess my expectations were way off base. I have been looking for the icons in the menu somewhere. When I did the 'zoom in' as you suggested I finally see the icon so I've been doing it right all along. So after all that, I am somewhat underwhelmed by the custom icons in general. Thanks for your time though!!

Does anyone know how to add icons to be display in the POI file editor under " image" ?

Has anyone loaded icons to a MIO C230? I followed the directions, double checked files. POI's load ok, but no correct icons, only the default "i". I have the icon in the file folder with the POIs. Same names, but no luck on loading.
