Hi, Could anybody with icon

Hi,

Could anybody with icon creating talent make icons for:

Value Village
Payless Shoes
Quesada Mexican Grill

Cheers

POI Icons

Is it mandatory to get permission from a company to upload a version of their logo to be used with POIs???

If not, do you just edit the icon slightly to conform to standards on the site.

Looking to add something like a "Valero" icon, will also look at the list and come up with others.

Blurry Icons

How can blurry Icons be cleaned up? I am using Delorme Street Atlas on an XP Laptop. Thanks, Dennis

it's an art

dmcgill1 wrote:

No one simple answer here. There are tools that try to clean up "blurry" in the very expensive photoshop and the completely free GIMP image manipulation tools. but when you are dealing with a little 20x20 or smaller image (the nuvi size limits, not sure of DeLorme restrictions but the concepts hold)), there isn't a lot of room for detail. Your best bet may be to pick your original source to avoid letting things get blurry. Also try making sure the the source is a sharp and clean graphic, almost any photo could be expected to blur when reduced this much.

Another approach that can sometimes help is to reduce to original image to some intermediate size, such as 80x80. then edit the pixels of this image, making sure that lines are sharp and that colored areas use the same consistent pixel color. Then when the final reduction to 20x20 or 16x16 is made, the graphics software will have a lot better source to work from.

On occasion I simply decide that the image that I had hoped to show on my nuvi is going to be too small and too complex to make a good icon, there is no shame in trying simpler images until you get one the works.

You might even find that just cropping your original source tighter may help; the less information that you try to shrink to that 20x20 target, the less blurring should occur.

The most common problem is double extensions. Open Control Panel, click on folder options, click on view and be certain "Hide Extensions for known file types" is unchecked.

Secondly, you have to be zoomed in to about the 300 foot level to see icons displayed on the map. Oh, if you had double extensions, once you correct the file names you need to rerun POI Loader.

I too sent new icons to POI Factory weeks ago and like yours, they're still not shown in the library. I wonder how much time it takes or who is maintaining this list.

Library is more for general icons.

You will find the icons on the file project page. The Icon library is mainly for general icons that can be used for multiple projects. Not everything goes into that library.

Miss POI

Now I'm confused

Miss POI

Thank you Miss POI, but now I'm even more confused: I sent a Thai Flag a month ago expecting it to be useful in general (there are other national flags in the main Icons Library) or as a temporary icon for the Thai Restaurant POI file. The icon doesn't appear in that Project Discussion thread nor on the POI file page either.

I guess I don't understand what you mean by "You will find the icons on the file project page".

lone Star Restaurant

How about making one for Lone Star Restaurant

ICON Software??

What software are users using to create ICONS? I have a new Garmin 3790LMT, and noticed that some of the ICONs will not show up. For example, the Rest Areas 1 works fine, but the Camping World (color) does not show up. Dairy Queen 1 does not show, but Dairy Queen 2 does. I'm confused as to why some show up on the Garmin 3790 but a few others that I've tried don't.

.

Personally, I use Photoshop 7. But, there are some other good ones as well. Gimp, PSP, etc. and free to boot.

Nuvi 3790LMT and Icons

It appears that the Nuvi 3790LMT requires 8 bit color depth to display. Some of the icons in the library have greater color depth, but will not show up on the 3790. To fix, I edited the BMP using Microsoft paint, and re-saved selecting the 8 bit (256 color). Then the icon shows up properly on the 3790.

Paint.net

jml1 wrote:

Paint.net is easy to use and free.

Irfanview

jml1 wrote:

Photoshop is great but absurdly expensive for personal use. A great free program is Irfanview, available free at http://www.irfanview.net/. It is mainly a viewer but will do enough editing to make icons, and can resize, reduce to 8 bit color and even let you edit in the transparency. Gimp is another good free choice, but the user interface is counter intuitive for most Windows users.

custom icons

where do i find the custom icons on my garmin 255w

.

You have to load them with the POI's when you use the POI Loader. And, they need to be named the same, such as Costco.gpx and Costco.bmp.

I'm really new to the whole POI thing and need clarification. I successfully loaded several POI files including the Redlight & Speed ones. The problem i am running into is the icons are not showing up for me. I ran a test route with it in simulation mode and the icon for Dunkin Donuts for example didn't come up, it was just the checkered flag.

Both files are named "DD-US" with one being a .csv the other being a .bmp file. Do i need to have .csv and .bmp in each name "DD-US.csv" and "DD-US.bmp"?

Sorry for the long newbie question, but I can't figure it out for the life of me. I have a Nuvi 3790LMT.

Folder options

If you are using a Windows computer, make sure you do not have the "Hide extensions in known file types" preference checked in the folder options. Then look carefully again at your file names and make sure you do not have double extensions (eg. DD-US.bmp.bmp).

Speed camera BMP icons

I would like to see an icon rather than a dot when approaching a speed camera location. I looked at the icons here and saw a lot of them with a pictures of speed limit 35, 40 ,45 etc. I thought that it would be nice to see those on the gps for the applicable speeds at each location. But how would it be determined that any particular one would be used or is this not possible. If not why all the different icons here?

simple answer is you can't

The simple answer is you can't accomplish what you want with a single file. Icons are associated with the file name, so to display a speed limit sign for say 30 MPH (or KPH) you would need a file with just those cameras and the appropriate .BMP. It would be the same for all other speeds as well.

Most of us here on the site that I'm aware of use just a single icon representing a speed camera and use the @ symbol to set a speed. As this is an alert, the background color of the alert changes between black and red depending if you ar above or below the speed following the @ symbol.

Where do you put the @.

3790LMT; 2595LMT; 3590LMT, 60LMTHD

@ sign

Put it after the POI name. For example:

"Target New-York@30"

will trigger an alert when driving close to the POI at more than 30 mph.

Thanks

When I get home today I'll give it a try.

Teeny Tiny Icons

The POI icons appear to be so small they are unreadable on my Garmin 3790, even when I zoom in to the closest image. Is there an easy fix for this? Thanks! Tom

Icons on 37xx

Icons are normally 16x16 on older GPS, but on the 37xx they can be as big as 24x24. The simplest way is to rescale them. You can use MS Paint to do it or any other image software.

icon usage for 255W

i recently download a bunch on icons on to my 255W but dont see them in my Factory set icons. If you bring up my custom POI it show them but they are not on my map if I place them in my favorite file. why???? what am i doing wrong????

The icons that you download from POI Factory are only for use with Custom POIs. They won't work with your Favorites.
