POI ... help, plz (Program Files (x86))

Need a little help. Finally decided to put some custom POIs into my Garmin 1490.

Downloaded the PoiLoader and ran it.
I had already downloaded the Walmart and Rest Area POIs.

I downloaded both the mp3s and bmps for both POIs.

I renamed all the files thus: Walmart_redlight.csv and bmp and mp3 (meaning all files named as for their use).

The files were in a separate folder from anything else.

Used the PoiLoader and all seemed to work just fine. I unplugged the GPS and I can find them on the GPS. It doesn't work. Tried to go by a local Walmart and there is no icon on the map nor does the .bmp run.

What have I missed?

Thanks in advance!

A few thoughts

1) Your nuvi can't play mp3 audio so you'll need to use wav files:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730

2) Unless you run POI Loader in manual mode and set an alert for a POI, there will be no alerts when using POI Loader's Express mode on regular POI files downloaded from The Factory. Also, driving by a WalMart may not trigger an alert since the POI location may be too far from the roadway. Using TourGuides is a way around this, but I suggest you wait a while before trying TourGuides.

3) Lastly, icons are tricky. Seeing or not seeing them may depend on the GPS model in use, the device's settings, and the zoom level. My first suggestion is to zoom in further as you approach the POI location as a zoomed map display may show the icon you loaded while a zoomed out display may not show it.

Check the faqs, experiment, and shout back if you need more help.

The 1490 does not have the feature to play mp3's .You will need to use Wav and sox.exe to get your alerts to work.See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730 . For the icons to show see https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?... and also https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?...

POI help

I researched a bit more and noticed that most notes state that the Poi Loader should be in it's own folder under Garmin. Mine is not, it's right in the Garmin folder. Is that a problem?

If it runs it should be OK

If POI Loader runs, it should be OK where it is. It's odd that it didn't install into its own folder though. As you read through charlesd's and my earlier comments, note that the sox.exe file (assuming you're using a PC—not needed when using a Mac) is in the folder with the POI Loader program file, not the data folder which contains the csv, gpx, bmp, or wav files.

More: if you had successfully use mp3 audio custom alerts before, it was with an older nuvi that could play mp3 audio. For almost all new nuvi models, the mp3 player has been removed.

POI help

I will fix the bmp files and install sox.exe and give that a try. Thanks!

In Garmin folder

Poiloader is located in the Garmin Folder .Program files(86) and click Garmin Folder and you will see the Poiloader Folder.

Look at this for setting up your custom pois. http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721

Make sure when installing the sox.exe file you located it in the correct location on the computer.Program files(86)then click Garmin Folder, click Poi Loader folder and put the sox.exe there.

Noticed on your account page it shows Nuvi 65LM but not the 1490. May be a good idea to update the info.

@joe

I noticed that you named your files
Walmart_redlight.csv and bmp and mp3

I am assuming that you wanted to be "alerted" when driving near a Walmart because you inserted "redlight" into the file name - probably based on POI Loader help info.

Quote:

Proximity Alert Information

Proximity alert information can be calculated automatically based on speed information. It can also be included in .gpx data files or added in Manual mode.

POI Loader determines proximity alert information based on the following criteria, listed from highest to lowest priority:

Proximity alert information listed for individual POIs in a .gpx file. This information overrides all other proximity alert information.

Proximity alert information entered in Manual mode.

Proximity alert distance calculated by POI Loader based on speed information in the file name or in individual POI names. This calculation uses the following formula:

Prompt Distance = 36 seconds * Speed.

A default proximity alert distance of 400 meters/0.25 miles if the file name contains the word "redlight."

Now what POI Loader does not make clear is the the coordinates of the location must be within 30 meters of the road on which the device is traveling for an alert to be activated.

If you will use EPE to look at the Walmart file and find the Walmart you drove by - and then look at the Edit dialog and put 30 into the Proximity field (assuming it is reading in meters (or 98 if it is reading in feet) - then zoom in on the map and see if the circle EPE drew touches the road on which you were driving.

Note that most Walmarts have huge parking lots and are mostly way of the approach road. My closest Walmart is over 200 meters off the road I use to go there.

Poi

All my poi's are in the same folder all different file names one set for redlight cams one for fedex stores and one for pro bass store garmins poi loader loads them fine of me

POI loader

Ok, got the icon to show up, not sure the sounds work, but have run into a new issue. I noticed that my POI Loader is an older version. Now, I can't download and get the updated loader to install.

Got really frustrated, so uninstalled EVERYTHING that was Garmin and started over. Garmin Express worked just fine. When I go to install the POI Loader, it shows it's installing, but it won't install.

I'm running Windows 7, and obviously it installed it previously, so I just don't get it.

Run as Admin

Don't know if this will help, but it is worth a try ...

Right click on the POI Loader installer file and select "Run as administrator"

And if that doesn't work...

Given that the old POI Loader was an older version, more info may be found here:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/29638

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/26494

The suggestion to use the Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup Utility in the 2nd link above may work if nothing else does.

Let us know if you succeed. Good luck.

One last thought: I don't know how old your older POI Loader was, but if quite old, it installs to a different folder than the newer POI Loaders, and this can cause a double installation of POI Loader. This has caused grief in the past for users, especially when they're trying to copy sox.exe into the POI Loader program folder and they put it in the wrong folder of the two POI Loader program folders.

I think POI Loader 2.5.4 and earlier installed to a folder under C:\Garmin while newer versions install to a folder under C:\ProgramFiles(x86)\Garmin. More, if this applies to you:

Most likely you have some left over files that is preventing the new installation.Look under Program Files(86),Garmin Folder,Click Poi Loader Folder and see what is left there. Here are some ideas just in case you didn't try them.Might not be your old version but should apply. http://www.uninstallapp.com/article/How-to-uninstall-garmin-... don't forget to reinstall sox.exe once you get the updated version.

When you look in the Poi Loader folder and if you see PoiLoader exe still there. You may want to click it and reinstall the old version and use something like Revo Unistaller to remove all the files. Another option https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/mats/program_install_and...

POI help

Ok, my issue is computer related. There is no X86 listed under programs. Guess it's time to upgrade to W10.

I further figured it out with another PC, everything worked perfectly.

Thanks for the helpful advice!

The folder name is Program Files (x86)and underneath this folder will be the Garmin program files within the Garmin folder.

It's been a long time since I upgraded POI Loader to the current versions and don't remember if the old POI Loader was in a folder labeled POI Loader or in the Garmin folder.

On one of your posting you said Windows 7 was your operating system. If yes then you should be able to see the one folder" Program Files (x86)" once you click on it then you will see Garmin folder and then the PoiLoader folder.

Windows XP you would start off with just Program Files.

I have Windows 7

ProgramFiles(x86)
Garmin
POI Loader

The above is the name of the folders on my Windows 7

Folder options?

It sounds to me like you just need to change the folder options on your computer to "Show hidden files and folders" and to unhide "Protected operating system files."

Up and running now.

Using another computer it sounds like all is well now and the associate bmp and wav files are all working.Glad it all worked out.Still curious why you didn't see the Program Files(86}on Windows 7. It is not a hidden or a protected file.

POI help

Ok, upgraded to Windows 10 and all is good to go. I checked on my system, and there were no X86 programs. Don't know what happened, but figured that upgrading to W10 would fix that and it did.

BTW, the upgrade to W10 was pretty simple and straight forward, it saved all my files, right down to my background and all the files on it and everywhere else. Total time was about an hour.

And, for those that provided helpful advice, I checked out my Walmart POI alerts and everything works. You guys are awesome!
