Activating Custom POI

I am not a computer whiz, and this is my first GPS. I took my first trip and I have downloaded a few (quite a few) custom POI's in my nuvi 1450LMT. As I tooled down the road I saw signs that told me of spots that I feel the GPS should have let me know. The only one it did was Rest areas, and I-5 has a lot of signs for these also. And I was told about all the Safeway stores, McDonalds, Fedex stores, Starbucks Coffee shops, etc. These places I did NOT ask for. I saw a term on "Tips and Tricks. "Place your GPS in Custom POI ready mode". That was all. How do I do this? Remember puter dummy here. TIA
Complet instruction in the FAQ's
If you are seeing some of the pictures for the POI's you are at least at the right zoom level, 200ft. Chances are the ones are seeing are the built in Garmin POI's. In order to see the custom POI the picture file must be downloaded to the same folder as the POI and it must have the same name except for the three letter extension.
Example:
test.csv
test.mp3
"CSV" and "MP3" are the extension. CSV could be depending on the file downloaded. Also MP3 may need to be supstituted for wav depending on model of GPS. Not just the extension but file type. Not all GPS can play a MP3 file so it needs a wav file for the sound.
Again check the FAQ's for the complete instructions.
I am not seeing any pictures
I am not seeing any pictures of the POI's. The signs I see are the ones beside the hiway, the blue ones. The GPS just dings and a little black label comes up for every thing but the custom POI's. I really don't want to know where every Safeway, Fedex Office, McDonalds, etc, are.
I just download the POI's from the sites to my computer then to the GPS. I don't do anything with the CSV or MP3 extentions. I assume they are part of the download.
Ok - let's go back a step
As I learned when I first joined this site, you have to give others a fair amount of information for them to help you.
I am going to recap what I think you did.
You downloaded quite a few POI files from poi-factory and that included, say, the Mcdonalds from
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/11603.
You did not download any .mp3/.wav or .bmp files
You put these files into a folder on your PC; started POILoader; pointed POILoader to that folder on your PC; ran POILoader in "Express" mode and finally got the message that "xxxxx" POIs had been added to your Nuvi.
As you drive around your nuvi is "dinging" BUT NOT FOR CUSTOM POIs.
You are seeing "little black labels" (please give more description of what this is)
Did you go to Tools > Settings > Proximity Points and proximately alerts on? You were not clear on this.
ChuckD wrote "I really don't
ChuckD wrote "I really don't want t oknow where every Safeway, Fedex Office, McDonalds, etc, are."
Chuck,
One uses Garmin's POI Loader program to convert the CSV files into a custom POI gpx file.
One should put each CSV file in its own subfolder.
So for example
C:\Custom POIs CSV files\RestAreas
C:\Custom POIs CSV files\POIFactory Red light Cameras
C:\Custom POIs CSV files\Hospitals
When running Garmin POI Loader you specify:
1. Save to Computer
2. tell it the directory where you want the custom POI gpx file created
3. tell it the csv files directory C:\Custom POIs CSV files (the program will automatically look at all the subdirectories there)
4. Select MANUAL mode (not express mode) Manual mode will get you more questions
5. For each CSV file you will get additional questions. These questions are concerning proximity and speed alerts. If you don't want to be told when you approach every McDonalds, then UNcheck "This file contains proximity alerts" for the McDonalds CSV file.
Thanks Howard and Jman, I
Thanks Howard and Jman, I was pretty sure I did as you said. Just to make sure I ran a search for .CSV files in my Custom POI file and there were 21 listed, the same number of custom POI. None of my files are for McDonalds, safeway, Fedex, etc. I did run the Manual Mode as you suggested and did all it requested as far as prox alert and distance. I also downloaded .wav with the prox alerts. They are in the Custom POI files.
The alerts I get for all the places I didn't request (McDonalds, Fedes, safeway, Starbucks, etc) show up on the GPS screen as little black boxes with white letters and the dings shown me they are in the area. Just as the Rest areas do, which are one of my POI's
Is there something I have to do to activate all this or is it suppose to be automatic?
@ChuckD
OK, you are saying that you DID NOT download McDonalds from poi-factory but you seem to be getting "alerts" from McDonalds.
We need to get you comfortable with simulation, so you can check out what is happening from the comfort of your home. An exercise on simulation is at
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/31482
Once you learn how to do a simulation, what I think you might try is to zoom in as close as you can and then simulate somewhere you are certain that you have gotten these alerts you are referring to. By being zoomed all the way in, hopefully you will see icons to identify what is nearby.
Let us know.
Thanks J Man for the
Thanks J Man for the information. I will try that later, but right now I got to get ready for a two week fishing, camping, square dancing trip to the "Gem of the Cascades", Diamond Lake in Oregon. It is a Square dance festival that lasts for three days at one of the best fishing lakes in Oregon. The camp sites are dry, without electric, but in my 30 foot RV that will give me no problem. As far as the fish go any less than 19 inches go back and for the last four years we have limited out ever day. We will bring home enough trout to last until the next fishing trip. And I will not need the GPS to get there. LOL
Activating Custom POI
OK I am back and had a great fishing, square Dancing, relaxing trip but now back to the GPS. JMan I tried what you said with the Sim and none of the POI did anything. Is there something I do to active them or is it Automatic?
Thanks
Not automatic

Glad you had a great and relaxing trip.
Alerts for custom POIs are not automatic. You turn them on or off by Tools > Settings > Proximity Points > [on/off].
The default alert will be a tone. You can, however, employ sound file of the .wav variety (your 1450 will not play .mp3 files) by downloading sox.exe. There is a good explanation How do I get voice alerts using wav files for units without mp3 capability? by charlesd45. Find this tutorial at
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730
You might go turn on Alerts and try a simulation to make sure the tone sounds. Then, follow charlesd45's tutorial to get or make some .wav files.
good luck.
Giving up on Custom POI's
OK, I have tried everything (except the right thing) and I have sim several places to no avail. I have deleted all POI's from Device and reloaded include the TourGuide addition to cvs. Guess i am not going to get it to work. Wish I knew more about computers and GPS's.
What I want is to be driving down the road and the GPS states "State Park ahead" or "Camping world ahead" etc. I am not getting that via Sim and on the last trip I did not get it on the road.
Any more ideas?
Don't Fret
It's late tonight but we'll get to the bottom of the problem eventually. The frustration will quickly disappear once you figure out what's not quite right and the GPS starts doing what you want it to.

Here is the process I use for custom pois http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 .Using TourGuide in the file name will give you a alert of 1/4 mile using express mode unless you increase the radius in manual mode using poiloader or build the alert distance into a gpx file. Using TourGuide in the file name will also trigger other custom poi alerts if in the radius you have set.Would suggest to hold off on the TourGuide until you get every thing set up and working. If you have any pois with key words like redlight or speed in the file name they will also trigger a 1/4 alert using express mode for poiloader.
If you still have a problem use my contact tab and send me a email so we can look at the files. As posted your unit will only work with sox.exe and wav file for voice alerts. That is covered in the link above.

…..
That really puzzles me because only the Custom POIs would be capable of causing the dings and a little black label to occur as you approach them. POIs built into your map would not do that.
What you are seeing are “proximity alerts” and have to be setup via POILoader manual mode, or have special file or location names which would work using express mode.
Do you have POIs from another site in addition to the ones from POI Factory?
What is the names of all the files in the Garmin\POI folder on your Garmin 1450 LMT?
Are there any files that end with .gpi anywhere else on your 1450 LMT? Any that are located other than in the Garmin\POI folder will show up in Custom POIs but will not be deleted by POILoader when you tell it to "remove all previously installed custom POIs from your device".
More info please

Some units have the ability to display stores and things from the map's POI list and sound an alert (ding) as you approach them. The setting for this is under Tools -> Settings -> Map and called Show POIs. You can select different categories such as gas, food, groceries and set a proximity. So, the question is does your unit have this feature and did you enable these?
The most common problem with getting custom poi, the ones you download and install using POI Loader is double file extensions in windows based computers. By default Microsoft windows hides (doesn't display) file extensions for known file types. A file extension is the character string that tells the computer what that particular bit of data is supposed to be. Most file extensions are 3 characters like exe which means Executable (a program that can be run), or what we normally use for files associated with your Garmin GPS which are: CSV - Comma Separated Variable; GPX - GPS eXchange Format; WAV - Waveform Audio File; and GPI which is the compiled output from Garmin's POILoader program.
Assuming you are using Windows, left click the Start button at the lower left. It should pop up another screen. Look for an entry "Control Panel" and left click it. At the top of the pop up window will be a horizontal list of items. Left click TOOLS, then Folder Options. In that pop up window, click VIEW. There in the list will be an entry called "Hide Extensions for Known File Types" with a box and a check to the left. Left click this entry so the check mark goes away. Click OK down at the bottom of the pop up and then close those pop ups.
Use Windows explorer to look into the folder where you have placed the files you want loaded by POILoader. You should now see file extensions on all the files. Look at all the sound files (they must end in WAV) and be certain they do not have two .WAV extensions. The same for your icon files ending in BMP. There should be only a single .BMP at the end of the file name. While you are looking in this folder you need to be absolutely, positively certain that each POI file you want to either display an icon and/or sound an alert has exactly the same name (including upper case letters) as the POI file. Rest Areas Combined.CSV has to have a Rest Areas Combined.WAV and a Rest Areas Combined.BMP in order to get everything to work properly. If you assign a proximity to a POI file that does not have an icon, a black dot will display on the map. If the file does not have a WAV, a DING will sound. If the names are not exactly the same, dots and dings are what you get.
Because you have a 1000 series unit, it will only play WAV alert sound files and only if you have another program called SOX (Sound Exchange) in the same folder as the POILoader.exe file. SOX.exe must be version 14.0.1. There are later versions, but these don't work with POILoader because the commands used don't match what POILoader sends.

The 1450LMT is much like the 2x5W units in that area and does not have that feature. (As far as I can tell from the manual.)
@ ChuckD
Glad you learned simulation since that will be of value as you learn how to do things.
However, we may need to ask you to back up a bit so we can get a clean start.
Since you are new you may want to do a couple of the Beginner Exercises. To make it easy, when you click on the first link below, hold down the "Cntl" key as you left-click. That will open a new "Tab" in your browser in the "Tab" bar. Click on that 'Tab" to do the first exercise - leaving the "Tab" you are now reading open and available to click on and return here.
The first link makes sure settings on your computer are such that you can do more advanced POI loading.
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30393
This next link helps you get a backup by attaching your GPS to your computer. (NEVER do anything to your GPS until you have a backup)
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30394
Now that you have a backup, perhaps you should do as Evert suggested above and remove all of the .gpi files from your computer. Remember that you can get then back because of your backup.
Assuming that you are using POILoader 2.6.1.0 (right-click on the word POILoader in the upper left corner of the dialog box and select "About POILoader ..." to find which version you are using), it will remove all custom POI files from your computer, so take the time to go do that.
Now, use POILoader to load ONE (and only one) POI file from this site that has locations near your home. To do this, let me suggest that you create a NEW folder on your computer called "Test POI". Download your chosen one POI file from poi-factory into that folder. Run POILOader in manual mode (this will be on the fifth screen and has 4 entry boxes) Point POILoader to the folder called "Test POI" and you will see that POILoader fills in the name of the POI file you downloaded from poi-factory.
On the next screen of POILoader check the box that says "This file contains proximity alerts points" and then check the radio button that says "Alert whenever you get close to a point" and put 1000 in the box. finish the POILoader run.
Now, what you should do is make sure that proximity alerts are on - Tools > Settings > Proximity Points > on.
Go for a ride in your area past one of the locations of whatever you downloaded. See if you get alerts and the dialog box. Did the dialog box alert only for whatever POI you downloaded?

Is the POI a TourGuide? For locations set back off your route (school buildings and I guess Wal-Marts), setting a route that passes by them won't set off an alert unless the building is very close to the roadway that's your route. Using TourGuides is a way to set a radius that might meet your needs.

I just read that all TourGuide have to be converted from .csv to .gpx. Could this be my problem? I am just guessing now. Reading to much and learning nothing it seems.
I don't know where you read that, but it is not true.
There are a lot of sources that say that and even Garmin says that the TourGuide POI file must be .gpx, but it is not true. They also say that the sound file must be mp3, which is no longer true.
Unfortunatley the Garmin website lags way behind in changes made by their designers and programmers and is one of the worst places to look for correct up-to-date information.
More likely you may not be naming the tour guide files exactly the way they need to be.
Gary Hayman has a good article about tour guides:
http://home.comcast.net/~ghayman3/garmin.gps/pagepoi.04.htm#...
Note that he uses csv files in his examples.

I have named two types of TourGuides Type A and Type B -- this is all un-official but will help when you are discussing TourGuides
FROM MY ARTICLE

On Custom POI page 9 of my website
Garmin Tricks and Tips ...
http://bit.ly/garmin_gps_tricks
"...The original files had to be of the .gpx file type and were prepared and furnished by third party developers; but soon GPSr users figured out how to prepare their own. [I call this the 'Type A' style of TourGuide.]
"Later, users figured out how to also use the TourGuide capability for constructing 360 degree, radial proximity alerts for any Custom POI. [I call this the 'Type B' style of TourGuide.] Then non-mp3 unit owners discovered that they too could use their units for this purpose using .wav file instead of .mp3 files by using a small program named 'sox.exe' in conjunction with their POI Loader program.
"With Garmin now releasing new units without .mp3 capability, The Type A style of TourGuide has faded drastically and those who now use the TourGuide capability are using the Type B style to their advantage. It is the Type B style that I am discussing here.
"No longer does one HAVE TO use a .gpx file for their TourGuide Proximity Alert, they can, and often do, use a .csv file.
"But when some new users write their own, they seem to make some errors. This is to alert the 'Newbie' to areas where they should pay particular attention. I have written many previous articles on how to write and use the TourGuide capability of your GPSr. Please read them for details and usage hints."
Then I go on to discuss the Type B TourGuide -- the one which you are talking about.
I hope that some of this may be of help to you.

You have been asked several times if you have done certain things which all have a bearing on the problem you are having with custom POI. To date, you have not answered any queries about you doing the exercises.
You state you are rather uninformed about working with computers and GPS units but give no indication you are even attempting to help us help you. All we hear are your complaints and our advice is seemingly ignored.
The description of your problems indicates you have double extensions on your sound and icon files. There is also the possibility the version of SOX you have is either an incorrect version or resides in the wrong folder on your computer.
Many have asked you for confirmation of what files you have installed and in what locations the files are stored. So far, the silence on your part to these questions is deafening. Until you start working with us, you will continue to have problems and will quickly get discouraged and walk away from some of the richest features of any unit.
TourGuides, while simple in practice really are an advanced feature that shouldn't be tackled until you can get simple, straight-forward files installed and working correctly. You then add the TourGuide level to those specific files. Go back to the basics. Get a simple file to work with both an icon and sound, then grow from there.
I don't know of any of us more seasoned users and contributors that started out with a TourGuide. We all began with the basics and once we were familiar with those features and functions added the TourGuide to some of our files.

Excellent advice
BoxCar's advice is right on. Get a small file working by using the simulation mode and build on your knowledge. I am quite familiar with files etc and it took a number of tries to get TourGuide to work on my Nuvi 1350. Turns out I needed to get back to basics - correct file names and having the correct version of SOX in the correct folder!

Boxcar Yes, I did the
Boxcar Yes, I did the exercises. Yes I followed all the advice you all gave me. I would be stupid if I did not. I am not stupid. The files are in the places you told me they should be. Once again, I am not stupid. If you wanted me to say, "Yes, I did as you suggested" then considered it said. There are 21 files I have listed in my POI File. They all came from this site. If you want me to list them I will but I can see no reason for it. I told you of the one I listed as a test POI. The Sox file is the one you all told me I should have and it is where it should be. If it was different I would have said so. As you all suggested I did check for double extensions on my sound files. I have not yet tried to use the Icon files. My "complaints" are the results after I followed your advice. The basics were the ones that did not work and I asked for help. Then it was suggested I add ToutGuide so I did. I have followed all suggestions and if you think I was complaining, think again. I am just trying to get this GPS to work as it should. If you don't want me to waste anymore of your time with my complains and deafening silence., then so be it......

Would everybody please read the original post a little closer.
What ChuckD's complaint was, is that it is "Dinging" for all the POIs that are contained in the Garmin map. It dings for everything, but the Custom POIs.
I think he would like to turn off the Garmin map POI dings and only have the Custom POIs alert.
I think ChuckD became a little PO'd because there were too many "Voices" making all kinds of suggestions, none of which seem to have worked, by the way.
Too many voices confuse the issue. Don't jump in unless you completely understand the users problem. If someone competent is handling the situation, then put your superman ego away and let them work it out.
A little story:
Back when CBs were the craze, there was a small boat sinking in the James River here. They got on channel 9, the emergency channel, and called for help. A member of REACT (members monitored channel 9) started working with them by calling the Coast Guard for them. While he was on the phone calling, someone else jumped on Ch. 9 and started talking to the boat. Then someone else got on there and more arrived to supposedly "Help" the boaters. Well it got so chaotic, the the one person that had the CG on the phone couldn't reach the boat to find out exactly where they were because their signal could not be heard.
The boat sank, thanks to too many people trying to help.
I am now putting on my flame-proof NASCAR driving suit.

@metricman
You are absolutely correct that this has got out of hand. Too many people involved. Time to get back to basics.
@chuckD I would suggest that you tell us again what is happening or not happening. Keep in mind that the pois associated with the map )built in) should not be dinging.
Lets get a handle on this and hel chuck\d.

Going back to basics
That I don't mind. Remember I don't know what the basic is suppose to look like. The first time I used the GPS was a trip to Seattle. I had heard about the custom POI's from Ghayman's site and he also refereed this site. So I did a bunch of reading and downloaded 21 Custom POI's. They included Rest Stop's, State Parks, Camping World's, Wal-Mart's (of course) and others of this type. I loaded them into a file called "Custom POI's". Same file included the POI loader from Germin, Sox 14-01-1 unzipped with the Exe file also in the same file. Also included a few .wav files for the POI's I choose. Remember I don't know what the POI's do or what they look like. On the way to Seattle from Southern Oregon Via I-5 it showed Rest stops at about two miles away. The GPS would ding and show a small black box with Rest area ahead and stay on the screen until we passed it. No .wav tones or sounds, just the dings. When we go off the main Hiway into the cities I am now seeing the same black box for Safeway's (A grocery store), FedEx offices, Starbucks coffee shops, McDonald's, and a couple others which I did not download nor wanted. I know I passed at least 4 other stores I had downloaded with the Prox alert. They did not show. When I did the download to the GPS from the computer I did the Manual setting the distance and alarm. Then it was suggested to use TourGuide. So I read the FAQ from here and Ghayman Site and download them the way it was suggested. I learned to Simulate a trip and that is the way I have checked out alerts for State Parks, Wal-mart, Camping World, and Low Clearance bridges. I still don't know what I should be seeing but I should be seeing something besides rest Stops, Safeway etc..
So that is the basics and I am not complaining just asking for assistance.
@ ChuckD
Thank you for the confirmation. I apologize for the tone I took in my post, but it was the first confirmation you had been following the advice given. I will state again, just get one file working. when you have it working you can then use the same procedure to add the others.
Now, I'll back out of this and let others see what they can do but will leave with one additional caution, let whoever it is asking you to try something know you completed the task.

That I have tried with the
That I have tried with the Test POI, Wal-Mart. It didn't work. It was loaded by itself in the GPS. It did not ding I did not check to see if Safeway or others did or not.
Start simple
ChuckD
I see I scared everybody away and I really did not intend to do that.
My suggestion is to start over and start simple.
It's close to bedtime here for me though, so I am asking Boxcar to help you get rid of all the current POIs that you downloaded and start with your Wal-Mart file, Icon and sound file in a folder named the same as the poi file. The shorter the name - the better. Also, no numbers in file names.
What version POI Loader do you have?
Did you download files that were .csv files?
Boxcar, can you run with this?
Metricman DriveSmart 76 Williamsburg, VA
I have cleared all the
I have cleared all the Custom POI's from my GPS except the Test POI which is Wal-mart. I just increased the range of the alert to 2000 feet and ran a sim to a restaurant which takes me right on the street in front of it. Nothing. The version for the POI loader is 261. All the files are .csv.
Question
And then let Boxcar take over.
On page 43 of your manual it tells you to turn on Proximity Points. Have you done that? It is in **Tools>Settings>proximity points**

@chuckd
I sent you an e-mail with a procedure that might help. Did you try it?
OK - let's start
I have cleared all the Custom POI's from my GPS except the Test POI which is Wal-mart. I just increased the range of the alert to 2000 feet and ran a sim to a restaurant which takes me right on the street in front of it. Nothing. The version for the POI loader is 261. All the files are .csv.
From your profile you are in Grants Pass, Or, and you want your test to run with the Wal-Mart file.
Let's start by loading the latest version of the file. DO NOT use TourGuide as of yet.
Use POILoader to load the file and set a 500 foot proximity.
Now, you state you simulate driving near the store by going to a restaurant. My question is which street are you driving on?
The reason this is important is where the marker is located showing the store coordinates. If you are driving along Hwy 199 or NE F St you will not get an alert. The alert will sound only while you are on NE Terry Ln. between 199 and NE F.
Please run this test and let us know what is the result.

Breaker 19, this here is the White knight
If you can’t keep that old Garmin in sight, I’m gonna leave you here and say no more – How ‘bout it?
……. I loaded them into a file called "Custom POI's". Same file included the POI loader from Germion, Sox 14-01-01 unzipped. Also included a few .wav files for the POI's I choose. ….
I don’t want to be the CB interference but did anyone notice that it is unusual that POILoader is in the “Custom POI’s” folder on his computer. It is usually installed in a “Programs” folder (the exact path varies with different Windows versions.) That makes me wonder if he did a correct install of POILoader.
14-01-01 is the wrong version, it should be 14-0-1. And when a SOX package is unzipped, a new folder is usually created, so sox.exe may not be directly inside the POILoader folder.
Jgerman, I just finished it
Jgerman, I just finished it and it worked. I sent you an E-mail stating so. Thanks
BoxCar, Ran the test just as
BoxCar, Ran the test just as you indicated. Went to an Abby's rest just across the street from Wal-Mart. And it worked. Told me the Store Name and number and had the dings and all. Thank you. Now what?
pwohlrab, thanks the prox
pwohlrab, thanks the prox points were on.
Breaker, the typing errors
Breaker, the typing errors are corrected. Also I have a folder on my Desktop labeled Garmin Information. In that folder is a file called Custom POI where they were downloaded to from this site. In that file is all the .csv and wav. There is a different file in the Garmin Info where the POI Loader is. Thanks

Now we know

Now we know custom POI are working as they are supposed to. From here we'll move to icons and custom alert messages.
Let's concentrate on icons to begin with as the unit will ding when it is in the set proximity of a location.
Download your desired icon for Wal-Mart from the site. There are 4, but you can only use one. Personally, I use the Wal-Mart 2 BMP Icon. The icon file (Walmart sun icon.BMP) goes into the same folder having your Wal-Mart file downloaded from here. Now one thing about the different formats. You often have a choice between a GPX or CSV file. Either one works. GPX files allow the destination to be dialed (if there is a phone number) and your unit has bluetooth. There are other features, but that's the primary.
Your icon file must have EXACTLY the same name as the POI file. Here I'm using the GPX as my example.
The file you download is: Wal-Mart_United States & Canada.gpx. Unless you rename the file to something like Wal-Mart.GPX your icon must have exactly the same name including spaces, underscores and the &. So, the Walmart sun icon.BMP file is renamed (in my case (Wal-Mart.BMP) which matches the name I have given my copy of the Wal-Mart_United States & Canada.gpx file.
Reload your POI file and Icon using POI Loader with the 500 foot proximity. Simulate driving by the store on NE Terry again and both a ding and the icon should show when you get within 500 feet. Let me know if it happens.

It worked
BoxCar. Followed your directions and I got a Ding and an icon where I was suppose to. I also tried to do the same thing with the .wav but that didn't work. So much for anticipating. One difference from your directions and mine, was your GPX, mine is CSV.
sox.exe
I also tried to do the same thing with the .wav but that didn't work.
Did you have sox.exe in the Program Files/Garmin/POI Loader folder?
If not get sox.exe at
http://www.poi-factory.com/images/csv/sox-14-0-1.zip
name the .wav file the same as the POI file just like you did the .bmp file
POILoader location
.....
Did you have sox.exe in the Program Files/Garmin/POI Loader folder?
....
Notice in his post titled "Breaker,The Typing Errors"
in response to my post he said "I have a folder on my Desktop labeled Garmin Information. In that folder is a file called Custom POI where they were downloaded to from this site. In that file is all the .csv and wav. There is a different file in the Garmin Info where the POI Loader is"
That is a very odd place for POILoader to be as I remarked before. It causes me to wonder because since he is not very computer literate I would have expected the POILoader setup to automatically install POILoader in the standard location (C:\Program Files\Garmin\POI Loader\ on an XP computer).
He would have to had work at it to get POILoader installer to put it in the location he says it is at.
glad to see we're making progress
BoxCar. Followed your directions and I got a Ding and an icon where I was suppose to. I also tried to do the same thing with the .wav but that didn't work. So much for anticipating. One difference from your directions and mine, was your GPX, mine is CSV.
Now we're ready to add a custom alert sound to your test file.
You will need 2 things. First is the correct version of SOX.exe. This is version 14.0.1. You need only the executable (the .exe) and it must be in the C:\Garmin folder of your computer. This is the same folder that has poiloader.exe. Second, you need the custom audio file. The problem here is there weren't any wav versions so I just converted the MP3s to WAV and sent them to Miss POI. She'll put them up in a day or two. If you click on my contact tab and drop me an e-mail, I'll send you the 3 files as well.
You can create your own, you'll need to go to aT&T's demo site: http://www2.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php Key in the phrase you want the unit to say, keep it short though too many words and the unit can start giving directions over the top of the alert. Follow the instructions on saving the file to your computer. The sound file has to have exactly the same name as the POI file except for ending in .WAV.
When you have a sound file, reload your test POI along with the same proximity, 500 feet and retest. you should now get the custom alert rather than a ding.
We'll cover GPX and CSV files a little later. We want to get a simple file working first, then we'll start some of the advanced work.

Garmin in a program file?????
Whoa, I didn't even realize that I have Garmin in my program files also. That is also where another POI Loader is. When I downloaded it I did it to the folder on the Desktop. It is easy to get to also and every thing to do with Garmin is in the same file. Don't ask how I got a program file. All I know is I work out of the folder on the Desktop. Is this wrong and how do I correct it?
