Shell gives us POI files

Have you seen the shell.com store locator ?

You can download all the Shell gas stations by country in a few different file formats inducing Garmin and TomTom

The store locator can be accessed at
http://www.shell.ca/en/products-services/shell-for-drivers/s...

And these two direct links are for Canadian and US Shell locations in Garmin format.

Shell Files

Yes, I was aware of that source and I used it to develop the files for poi-factory. If you notice, the files on that site do not give city and state or province. The files that I compiled have that information.

Member Box Car also uses the POI file issued by ExxonMobil for his POI file published here. See http://www.exxonmobilstations.com/gps

Good job mahoney. When I looked at this one, I was disappointed that there wasn't more meat on those bones. Yours is a lot more useful.

Shell file

Thanks for the kind words. I like being able to see the city and state/province whenever I use my gps. That is why I include this in column C. The Shell files took a lot longer to develop since that data is Not included on the Shell website.

As Mahoney has to do, the Exxon-Mobil files require about twenty to 30 minutes editing for each of the 3 files to delete those stations not in the target areas. I also convert State/Province names to their abbreviations.

I wish Jamba Juice would. I urged them to do it before, but it fell on deaf ears. I told them I'd patronize their stores more if they'd make it easier to find. Although now I can use my smart phone I suppose. A lot of people, me included, still use GPS. GPS doesn't need a cell signal to function. Sometimes simpler is better.

accuracy

Anyone had chance to check how current are those POIs? Especially those along rural highways? About 8 or so years ago a I had very unpleasant surprise when a lot stations (Shell included) had been closed. Very nasty thing when you are getting to POI just to find out that station get closed permanently. Especially in the middle of the night and with just fumes in tank.

Mahoney and Box Car both...

...do an excellent job with POI's. Every time I send Mahoney a correction, he has it on the new corrected list just about as fast as I send it to him. This guy is great. (I haven't had a chance to really check out Box Car yet. Maybe I will send him something to see how fast he acts on it.) wink
