August?

So, maybe we are looking at August now. I fear that the maps are going to be stale when we get them.

Next update

I almost dread when this comes out. I don't know how long after that it will be but someone will surely start the next "when will it be released" thread almost immediately. People should be more patient.

Still waiting

It would have been nice that Garmin could send out an email informing us about the next update. There's a few things that they haven't fixed in my town so I am not holding my breath until they change it with a new update. The main reason I got a new Garmin because they have a MicroSD slot in their basic model compared to my old TomTom device which was running out of space. I hope when August arrives we don't have to wait until September or October for the three month update. lol

August 5th, according to a representative at Garmin I talked to. I posted the email they sent me in the updates thread regarding this. We're getting three updates a year now.

I suspect

Garmin said there was an issue with the map update also. I suspect that the issue might have to do with the new edits made by users for North America. This map release will be the first map release that will includes changes made by users. Recall that there was a large update a couple of months ago that took Map Creator offline to incorporate a couple million changes. I think this is all linked.
Interestingly...HERE has "published" another map update since the 2016.10 came out (you can check by going to HERE.com). I can verify this new map includes even more updates I made myself on Map Creator. I'm curious if the new map update will include these changes, or only have the first round of changes.

Very interesting indeed...

My post was a lament Dave, not evangelism

Cellphones are not the all in one solution for many travelers.

A few points to make.

1. Google Maps now supports - or shortly will be supporting - offline usage of the maps.
2. If Google Maps isn't sufficient, I have Garmin Streetpilot from an Asus tabletphone installed on my device. I also have about fifteen additional choices in the Play Store to choose from, all with offline map access.
3. You might want to read my post again, especially the part where I mention proximity alerts. Since I want the proximity alerts then I must still be using my Garmin.
4. Current Garmin devices all come with capacitive screens, so your comment about the screen is a non-starter.
5. You're talking to someone who has a clue what he is doing. My post wasn't evangelism, so don't preach to the choir.

P.S. I have a Galaxy S4 as well and have absolutely no problem with GPS sensitivity. Guess I'm lucky in that regard.

I don't have a problem with

I don't have a problem with 3 updates a year. I would rather have 3 that are relatively up to date rather than 4 where it takes a year and half+ to get an error fixed.

RIP Garmin

I predict the end of Garmin by 2019.

You do realize that the majority of Garmin's profits come from other than their automotive GPS division?

That's an equally bold statement.

Almost half of their revenue came from automotive navigation, a field that they are investing less and less in. Equally, almost half their profits came from automotive.

The only reason they're still doing well is their fitness line, a field that will be almost non-existent in 18 - 36 months.

Marine and aviation aren't big enough to allow Garmin to see the sales figures they once saw.

Regardless, from here on out, Garmin will continue to "diversify" (i.e. let the automotive division die out) and run their PND's into the ground. Anyone that's used Waze over the the last 3-4 years can see how far it's come vs Garmin (a word that is now becoming synonymous with lack of innovation).

In fact, it wasn't until yesterday that I was navigating Toronto Pan-Am Games traffic that I realized Waze has now eclipsed Garmin. And once again, I say this as someone who has owned Garmin devices for about 17 years.

SmartPhone vs Standalone GPS

Garmin's move to reduce map updates would seem counterproductive unless they perhaps made a bad financial decision a few years ago and underestimated the actual costs when they decided on the marketing move of free Lifetime map updates. It was the primary reason I upgraded from the 255 to the 2595. I still believe the 2595 delivers better GPS service than my Smartphone with respect to pure navigation and user interface. (Which is to be expected of a dedicated, stand-alone device.) However the gap has been gradually closing between the two. Map updates, traffic, weather warnings, voice nav on the Smart Phone are now superior IMO. Garmin may already be signaling the early signs of a death spiral for the stand-alone GPS. No one I know with a smart phone is remotely interested in replacing it (or worse for Garmin, supplementing it) with a stand-alone GPS.

MAP UPDATE

I just bought a 3597LMTHD and needed to call Garmin.
While I had them on the hook I asked about the maps.
I was told that it will now be three times a year because thats the average that people updated their systems.
Hope this helps

I strongly suspect the 'average' that people update their Garmin

guilty...

If it was available more often, I would update my unit more.

Update

I guess that makes me above average Garmin user as I update my maps as often as they are available.

A dilemma for many!

Has anyone else noticed that it's quite likely that many people will be offered Garmin's 2016.10 and Windows 10 on the same day?

Oh my, what to do. redface

To many updates

That was the same thing I was thinking plus my Android Lollipop update is also scheduled for my tablet this month.

Now if it were Ice Cream Sandwich, I'd have to install it first before it melts, but Lollipops can wait without going bad...

upgrade

I have the droid turbo and just got mine upgraded to lollipop 5.1 about a couple of weeks ago, ended up doing a factory reset !! MS said windows 10 upgrades would start "about july 29 " so I guess that some will get it on the 29, 30, 31, and into aug so they can control it somewhat ! I haven't got that much hair left to pull out, I understand you can only do an upgrade to start with, if you want to do a clean install you have to do the upgrade then after that you can do a clean install by doing a reset !

.

Wow I thought it would be up by now

Not updating frequently is strange to me

I don't know why people wouldn't want to have current updated maps & POIs. I check for updates religiously. Not updating your electronics is like using a dull drill and wondering why you can't make it through the hole. I find the notion of people who don't update frequently so odd. Maybe if it was more "in your face" people would update like smartphone.

Not Updating Frequently

I also update ASAP but many people just don't care. They also don't realize that the roads may not change much but they could have current points of interest. They don't update and then complain that they can't find a business that has been around for some time.

Probably the most common reason is that they are afraid that their electronics may not be working at top performance but if they update they will be destroyed by the update.

I like to live life on the edge and backup early and often.

New Streets?

I am after the "Corrections".

Nothing more aggravating then being told to "turn right" at a "T" intersection onto the street that you are already on (it does end there in the real world). Seems that when the State Route turned there somebody had the street turn there and continue for about 200 feet.

I filed an error report and amazingly, it was fixed 2 map updates later. Maybe someone else complained also.

lane markings

lol ive seen lane markings that looked like the road crew were on a beer break when they painted them, turn lanes that don't go any where , wiggly lines down a straight road are these what garmin is waiting is waiting for ?

Get a Life

Is this all people have to worry about??? When Garmin will release the next map update? I have up to date maps in both my cars and Samsung Galaxy S6, so I am not that concerned. Only time I really used my Garmin was on a road trip. With auto GPS and cell phones I think Garmin could be in trouble as far as sales are concerned...

Updates, Does It Matter In Canada?

Especially for me in Canada, updates to maps are really slow. There is a shopping mall near me in a newer area of the city, it's been there for 4 years and there is still no update in the last map update. My 1390T says I'm driving in a field. So I just update yearly just to keep my GPS from going obsolete or EOL.

In Trouble

I agree that Garmin could be in trouble with severely diminishing stand-alone GPS sales. POI-Factory could also be in trouble with fewer and fewer active members.

other business lines are growing

koot wrote:

Garmin is well aware that people think of them as an automotive GPS company, and that shrinkage of that market is threatening to them. So their 2014 annual report gives great prominence to stating the last three years revenue and profit for five major lines of business.

http://sites.garmin.com/en-US/annualreport/

Major points: While automotive remains the biggest of the five segments, and accounts for the most total operating income, it is much less profitable as fraction of revenue than their fitness, aviation, and outdoor segments, with only marine being lower.

Since fitness has both surged in volume, and is very profitable, it would pass automotive/mobile as the most total profit for 2015 if trends continue.

I think there is a lot of fad in the fitness market just now, and that Garmin may be more at risk of a rapid loss of profit there than in automotive.

Agreed

Lots of guys are using the GPS on their smartphones so no need for a dedicated GPS unit. And not very many guys logged onto POI Factory whenever I come visit.

Are we there yet?
