It seems like every day I meet another person here in Tucson that is from Canada and a lot of them are now permanent residents and not jus winter visitors. This must be a very popular destination for Canadians.

The woman I have been with for the last 18 years was born there.

Full Coverage Full Screen JCV

I just updated a clone of my 755T, and to my pleasant surprise, Garmin is still providing the large (full coverage full screen) JCV file on this unit:

858,343,775 D3060190A.jcv (replaces D3060180B.jcv)

Garmin Express did not delete the old JCV file as it should have, so I ended up with both the old and new JCV files on my clone. This was not a problem as there was plenty of space on my clone device, but it could cause an issue on the real device. Of course, I can (and will) manually delete the old JCV file before I copy the update over to my real 755T.

As expected, at this time Garmin has not published this file for separate download and most likely will not.

That is is. In our area of Mesa there are 1900 homes and over 70% are owned by Canadians. It will be interesting to see how many are for sale this year with the CDN dollar worth about 30% less than it was last year. Getting expensive to buy US dollars these days.

nuvi 855 worthless JCV file.

Again, as expected, Garmin gives us the worthless JCV file on the nuvi 855:

26,208,478 D3153190A.jcv

There is no technical reason for this limitation, but Garmin continues to provide no way for users to get the much more useful full coverage JCV file for the nuvi 8x5 and 13xx/14xx devices. So, as in the past, I will replace this crippled JCV file with the full coverage file that came with my nuvi 755T.

Well

Well I can confirm no roads I updated are on this map update either, so that's now two map cycles that I would expect that to be on that it is not. This means the map available on Here.com is actually far more update to date than the one we Garmin users get it (or it seems the HERE mobile app).
It's disappointing for sure, I wonder when they will be on?
Oh well, I wasn't expecting this map update anyway. Maybe it'll be on 2016.30

Definitely sad, but not surprising.

That is frustrating Narvick, but I must say I am not surprised. Several years ago I read in the GPS forums (don't remember which one) that Garmin updates were 3 to 6 months behind Navteq. With the recent situation (Garmin announcing 3 instead of 4 updates per year, Navteq (Here Maps) being sold to a different company, and Garmin's contract with Navteq expiring this year with no confirmation AFAIK that a new agreement with the new company has been locked in) it is in some ways surprising that we even got a map update. This is just my opinion/suspicion that all might not be well between Garmin and the map maker. If someone knows otherwise it would be nice to hear about it.

well.......... I dunno but maybe....

Narvick and Alandb,

perhaps you might considering that you might get more confirmation of your thoughts should you contact Garmin and just bluntly ask?

I don't have any real reason to contract them.. although where I am geographically at the moment there are simply tons of new roads being created literately every day.

Now... there are tons of other things I want to know but I'm not curious enough to contact them for any confirmation.

A year or so ago, the Garmin maps were completely in sync with what was available on HERE, but it hasn't been that way the last few map cycles. You are probably right about all of the changes going on. I wonder if the user created data on HERE falls under different licensing? Maybe they aren't even sharing that data at this time and instead keeping it internal? That would make sense except that the user data doesn't appear on the HERE maps even on their own mobile app, but it does appear on here.com.

2016.20

Downloading it now via MapUpdater 3.3.4.

Thanks.

DNS Issues with some systems

The past few weeks we've been having intermittent operation with wired and wireless systems here getting to the internet.... Would connect locally, but not to internet.
This was traced to problem with the 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 DNS setting that were pushed to us...

I changed that by pointing our Primary DNS to: 4.2.2.2 in computers and routers, and all intermittent operation ceased....
Now if this was Google or ISP related, I don't know, but since 4.2.2.2 works seamlessly........ I'm leaving well enough alone

P.S. this was done a few days ago, and I noticed same download (~1 hour for 2689LMT and ~25 min for the partial map to SD card for 660 last night as with previous map updates)

What difference does that make? When you have paid for something the exchange rate does not matter !

Looks

Melaqueman wrote:

Looks like you may not have thought this one through before you asked the question. It makes a difference because you have to buy US dollars to make mortgage payments, utility payments, taxes, resort fees, and everything else that you buy or pay for while your in the US or even when your back in Canada and payments on your US property come due. All of those types of payments are 30% higher than they were a year or two ago. People may not be able to afford the extra costs and be putting their houses up for sale because of that.

Stuck at GE Step 2 of 2 Updating Maps

Garmin Express version 4.1.8.0 is stuck at Step 2 of 2 Updating Maps on my end while trying to update a Nuvi 2598. Started the update several hours ago (on a 6mb DSL line) and its been stuck at step 2 for the last hour. Screen indicates:
"Activating Maps Estimated Time Remaining: 1 hour, 9 minutes". Going to leave it sit for a while longer to see what happens.
