Garmin CIty Navigator NA 2016.10 has been released.

It has been reported over on the long running 2016.10 speculation/joke thread that City Navigator 2016.10 North America has been released and is available for download via Garmin Express or Garmin MapUpdater. It is time to close off discussion in that old thread and move the discussion of download experiences and map issues to this new thread.

I am downloading now on a clone of my 3597LMTHD using Express 4.1.4.0. I will report back when the update completes (or fails).

Finally, it's over. And thank you. smile

Wouldn't it be nice...

Wouldn't it be nice if Garmin once again made the large JCV file available for the older units?

I started it at 3:44PM EDST on new cable internet connection (Just moved from Chicagoland and Comcast to Mom & Pop Internet company in Mountains of NC.

Oh Boy

Here we go again.

GE started out telling me 3 hrs. 28 min. less than 5 minutes ago.

Now it say 2 hrs. 40 min. and still dropping fast. Only hitting speeds of 20 - 25 Mbps. Very up and down. Could be Garmin server or my service provider, as I have no way to tell.

Downloading with the "Both" option.

We shall see.

Sloooooow!

My download is going very slow ... been running over an hour and not half way yet! This is the slowest map download I have ever experienced. At this point I put the blame on my ISP (Mediacom) rather than Garmin.

Not as bad as I thought ... I forgot that Garmin Express estimates total time, not just download time, and my build and copy steps don't take anywhere near the time Express estimates. So my whole process (download, build, copy) took 1.5 hours.

Nuvi 755T and Full Screen Full Coverage JCV file.

I just updated a clone of my 755T and was happy to see that Garmin is still making the "large JCV" file for this unit. I have not copied this back to the real device yet, so don't know if it will all still fit in internal storage or if I will need to use the SD card for the JCV file. I will let you know when I put the update on the real device.

Here are the file details on the 755T. FIle sizes are in bytes.

CN North America NT 2016.10 ALL with GE 4.1.5.0

Updated GE to v 4.1.5.0 and then updated our 2455 and 2555 Nuvi's today.

2455 took 40 min start to finish with no problems
2555 took 25 min again with no problems

This included 3 updates - Maps, Time Zone and Traffic Text

Update done an older Windows 7 64-bit system with Intel B960 2.2 GHz processor and 4 GB memory.

Both units appear to be working great! Time for another trip to test them. Oh, that's right, we just got back from a 30-day trip to Alaska and the East Coast (NY,PA,NJ). Maybe it's time to stay home for a bit smile

Side note about "Large JCV".

Garmin changed the predicted naming convention so the JCV file ends in B instead of A. So those of you that are checking the predicted URL for a separate download of the JCV file, be sure to include this change in your URL construction: http://download.garmin.com/support/2016_10/NA/JV/D3060180B.j...

Unfortunately, the link is dead, even with the new name. (C'mon Garmin, give your loyal 8x5 and 14xx users the large JCV file!)

And I'll need it, too, as my route the following day has a new traffic pattern.

I don't use Google Drive. Another POI Factory member tried this a while back with DropBox and it generated too much traffic and caused the account to be locked.

nuvi 855 update summary.

I have completed the 2016.10 map update on a clone of my nuvi 855. As expected, I got a small "crippled" JCV file even though there was plenty of space on the clone to hold the full coverage JCV. Of course I will copy the full coverage JCV file from my 755T over to the 855 so I can have full function.

I was able to install the full NA map and the full coverage (large) JCV file to the internal memory of the 855 with about 133 MB free space left. I did move the ASR and SRX voice recognition files to the SD card to make space for the large JCV file.

Here is a summary of the 2016.10 files on the 855. File sizes are in bytes.

I used MapUpdater 3.3.4 to update my 3597, using alanb's clone method. The update, using MapUpdater, didn't provide a DEM file at all, as far as I can see.

I have the very large 1.14Gb DEM file stored in the .system folder on my 3597 from a previous update (or maybe even from another of my Nuvi's, I don't remember) and it remains there, with the same modification date, as it had prior to the 2016.10 update.

Did MapUpdater remove the gmapdem file during the map update as it has in the past? As far as the new gmapdem.img file that was downloaded by Garmin Express with the 2016.10 update, it is identical to the previous file. So I don't know why Garmin Express wasted the download time and bandwidth to give us a fresh copy.

I keep the gmapdem.img file on the Nuvi and the map files on the SD card. The map update using MapUpdater 3.3.4 left the old (very large) DEM file on the Nuvi and as far as I can see didn't install one in the .system folder of the SD card at all.
