Garmin North American 2016.10 Map Update

Well, someone had to start it! 
Based on prior years history shown here: http://forums.gpsreview.net/discussion/17527/redirect//p1 the new map update release should be imminent but, then again, the last update was about six weeks later than usual.

The manifest for CN Europe 2016.10 was published on the Garmin servers on May 6. So far, CN NA has not been posted.

Just loaded 2015.04... I don't know how much better the new updates are. We have several restaurants that Garmin doesn't even know exist. My car Nav system has known they are there for a year...

Why does this always start months in advance of a release?
And holy cow, are streets really changing that much where you live or travel? They sure aren't doing so here where I live. In fact, it's pretty rare that any new streets are built. And considering that reported errors take YEARS to show up in these updates (if they ever do), I am seriously doubting I would ever pay extra for Lifetime Map Updates in the future. Why bother?

The town made a lot of streets one way (they used to be two way)
There could be more places this has happened.
The streets are the same, only a different direction.
With new maps it might change the route it sends you.

No, but they will fit and work fine on a 4GB or larger SD card.

I just purchased a new Garmin Nuvi 55LM.
I was wondering how Garmin up-dates it's maps?
When I download the new one, does it replace the whole map or just add the additions?
I have been on this site for over 6yrs and never saw this question before. I am 72yrs old and this question is on my bucket list.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Update replace whole map. It is written as one file on Nuvi. Every update you will have to download whole map again (couple GB) before installation.
