Nassau And Suffolk County NY Red Light Cameras

The number of red light cameras permitted has doubled to 100 in Nassau and 100 in Suffolk.

New red light cameras need roadway sensors to work so the contractors will be putting conduit and sensor loops under the roadway.

We need to find and geocode these cameras and we need your help! Everybody has done an excellent job on the existing cameras and I know we can do it again! Newcomers are invited - we need all the help we can get.

It may be that Nassau County speed cameras will return in the future. We will be ready to report those locations also.

Camera Locations in Nassau County

I have not been active in a while but recently Nassau posted a report on RLC revenue for 2015-2016. It lists all 84 intersections with cameras. I have yet to compare it to the current POI. A Newsday URL showing all 84 intersections is at http://projects.newsday.com/databases/long-island/nassau-red.... I have the actual report in PDF format from a Facebook post but have not found a public copy.

Great find!

There is also a link in the article for a similar study in Suffolk County (100 cameras).

newsday camera list

Paging quickly through the list almost all the locations in Nassau are familiar to me. I guess I will do a direct comparison. Nassau hasn't moved locations like Suffolk has.

Nassau Surprise

I was surprised, though perhaps I should not be, that Nassau is 16 cameras short of its authorized number. Of course with the corruption and other BS, they have other things to do.

I did check the Suffolk link. I too am curious if it is up to date. Suffolk was a tougher nut to crack in trying to find all the RLC's. I know the one at CR-96 and Railroad in West Babylon is unidirectional and was moved from the north side of Railroad to the south side at one point. There was another list I stumbled across that showed the intersections including which directions were monitored. I'll have to dig for it but it was three years old IIRC and a comment noted some intersections were missing.

16 short

There must have been a falling-out between the camera contractor and Nassau over the speed camera debacle. In my opinion the contractor refused to cooperate to install the full 100 red light cameras. It doesn't make sense otherwise because the red light cameras are known moneymakers. There is no problem involved unlike the speed cameras.

The contractor made a huge investment installing all the speed cameras and they did not operate long enough to be in the black. It must have involved a failure of Nassau to comply with the contract. We still don't know how much this cost us taxpayers. The whole mess was kept secret.

John marks leaving nassau county

Newsday (pay site) has reported that John Marks, executive director of the Nassau County Traffic and Parking Violations Agency will be leaving at the first of the year due to the transition to a new County Executive.

He will be remembered for public statements about the former speed camera debacle.

New RLC Nassau County NY

I haven't seen this myself, but heard from a reliable source:

"Nassau County has installed a new Red Light Camera on the corner of Jericho Turnpike and Piquets Lane/Southwoods Road."

I don't know which corners/directions.

Here's the location on Google Maps:

40.814675, -73.477199

Thanks perpster!

Thanks for finding this, perpster. It is a mile from my house so I checked it out. The cameras are on the north and south sides, but not on Jericho Turnpike (NY route 25).

This reminds me that Aardvark reported in August 2017, on this page above, that 84 locations in Nassau County had cameras while state law had authorized 100. The appearance of this camera indicates that we should be watching for new locations of 15 cameras.

for those

of us who visit relatives and in-laws in NYC and LI, we're waiting for the signal that the area is blanketed...meaning if we go to MD and DC, we simply assume there are more cams than there are not, and we simply drive accordingly, as do the locals. It would seem that being alerted makes sense when it's the exception, not the rule, and at some point, we just follow the rules. I get that feeling as the activity in this sub forum seems to be non-existent...

You're welcome, and thanks for verifying it.

Speed Cameras in Nassau?

I'm back home on the Island for a few days, and I've gotten some "Photo Radar" alerts on my Garmin, using recent POI Factory RLC and Speed Camera files. The hits I've gotten have been in Nassau County near schools - I know they were using speed cameras for a while, and thought they had all been removed. Did we keep the locations in the file here, just in case, or has the program been reactivated?

Nassau and suffolk Speed cameras not activated

Good to hear from you, Moose!

All Nassau and Suffolk County speed cameras were deactivated 3 1/2 years ago. They have physically been removed about 1 to 2 years ago.

Today's speed camera file does have one location in Nassau, at Rockaway Turnpike and Reyem Street at the entrance to Costco, which is near Lawrence High School. About 1/4 mile north the road becomes Rockaway Blvd. in Queens County, part of New York City, where there are active speed cameras.

There are no other locations in the file and I am emailing Angela to remove that one. Your GPS must have POIs that are four years old!

Perhaps the "photo radar" alerts are from Garmin Cyclops which may have outdated info?

dobs108 smile

I'll check...

Thanks! I'll take a look at the files on my Garmin - I'm pretty sure they are no more than 6 months old, and I don't have Garmin Cyclops.

One hit I specifically remember was at the Teddy Roosevelt Elementary School on Main Street in Oyster Bay. I had a couple of other alerts, but I don't remember off-hand where those were. I'll double check the files I have loaded.

Teddy Roosevelt school

AHA! That location is in ciarmer's Mobile Speed Cameras Nassau file. It is a separate file from the POI Factory Speed Camera file:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/43581

To be clear for everyone, mobile speed cameras are no longer legal in Nassau or Suffolk County NY.

dobs108 smile

Yes, I see that!

I took a look at the alert files I am loading, and saw that separate Nassau speed camera file. If I remember, it was put together before the program went live, so it would be available. I'll have to delete that before I update the files on my Garmin.

Thanks!

this reminds me of car repair

you know the ones where someone says, what do you think....mfg says replace belt at 9 yr./90k, my car is a 2005 with 70k, do you think I should fix it? If I don't have to spend $1,800 right now, I would rather not. So the years and years of experience on the forum, incl. folks who have DIY'd multiple times, says you are generally good to go, no need to worry nor spend the money.

Analogy. Would it be possible to drive worry-free, without actually knowing where rlc and speed cameras are located? Or the notion of doing such is outlandish. If it's possible, then imagine how much energy could be diverted elsewhere. Unless the rlcs are being treated as a hobby.

What? That was a whole lot

What?
That was a whole lot of words about nothing just to spin an opinion. Basically you don't like the forum having RLC or Speed Camera files. We get that!

I never get lost, but I do explore new territory every now and then.

Ban the cameras

I would drive much more worry-free if the cameras did not exist period. They should be banned.

For now. Likely only a matter of time. Especially with both state houses (almost) and the Governor all of the same party.

One I admit, the other was a freaking wall

I know this is an old thread but I want to share two events I had:

1) I was trying to beat the light, and it turned red right before I began to turn into the Roosevelt Mall and I won't deny it was red while I started to turn (this was around 8am and if anyone knows what it is like during these hours, they would agree.) It was a painful crawl and I will not deny the camera caught me and I was in the wrong. Paid. Never again... right?

My second one, I had a major problem with. I know that supposedly a person reviews all violations but with such a cashcow, I think that the volume of violations that needs to checked overwhelms those tasked with reviewing all tickets. Why do I believe this?

Well... I drive XC60 (this is important to note) and the violation I received had multiple pictures OF A FREAKING WALL by the nearby gas station. Not even a single car, just a concrete wall with a few buildings in the background) was sent to me. I tried to wasted so much time on the phone and no one was able to say anything about "hey that's wall, 4 pictures of wall). Logic is something to be desired and I waste my time on the phone and still to go to court and thankfully the judge could see the problem. I requested if the he could please dismiss the ticket and any all court fees and charges because the place I called on the back of the ticket, they had "claimed" those changes cannot be made. I asked why the couldn't and the gentleman said they were limited on what they can and cannot do he agreed, with my conversation it was also a wall and it should be thrown it out since, you know, it was a wall.

Scheduled court date and rescheduled 4 times for family emergency and whatever nonsense I could tell them that worked.
My reasons for rescheduling
1) because my wife wanted to go to the beach
2) Because I just didn't feel like it
3) I was asked if I wanted to go fishing for some fluke
4) I don't even remember why, so it probably wasn't important

I had no idea the city would do one, let alone 4.

The judge explained that each violation is reviewed before being sent out and somehow this fell through the cracks. I talked for a minute and requested all court fees and any other fees be dismissed. "Dismissed with _____" (no count fees or any other used as an excuse to take more money from you. ( do not remember the term he used but I had to waste time speaking with several people who either said they could not do anything about it, or that I should notify the front desk before the hearing.

*side note* if you are ticketed by a police offer, that police offer does not have to show. An officer who was not there was adequate.

After all of that and many friends going to the mall there, most hadn't been back since and refuse to do so as has my wife and several friends. I'd rather go somewhere else and not be stressed over every single thing and absolutely will not directly add any revenue to that area. I heard the cameras were removed but there but supporting that cash cow will not include anything from me for the foreseeable future.

I know small businesses in the area that cannot control those cameras and I do understand they may have felt the effect. Thank your down for that. I'm so glad I changed my mind and buy my wife her car elsewhere.

I don't know how it is now but they made more than enough money to line there pockets for several who financially benefited from this. Only thing I overheard was that Macy's was ghost-town and we purchased my wife's Tesla Model S in NJ with was out of the way, but I refused the thought of supporting them.

My emotions towards that place... well, I don't think it will change anytime soon except passing around when going from NHP the beach.

Even typing this triggers a feeling of hatred for anything in the area. The money isn't the issue, is it "what budget needs funding and just how quickly decides how many more are needed to be put up for safety purposes."

go the other way

The main entrance to Roosevelt Field Mall at Ring Road and Old Country Road is one of the biggest and busiest intersections anywhere:

https://www.google.com/maps/@40.7431823,-73.6145748,53m/data=!3m1!1e3

When there is a traffic jam many cars can be stuck inside the intersection on a red light. People are ready to cut you off when you have the legal right-of-way. It is no wonder this is one of the top grossing red light cameras in Nassau County.

I have never gotten a summons there because I never go there! I use the other mall entrances; there are many others.

Other camera locations near me have multiple potholes inside the intersection. While looking for the potholes, take your eye off the light for two seconds and they got you! Two other intersections with cameras have no stop lines and no crosswalks. How do you know where to stop?

The main way that I use the POI Factory camera files is to plan my route for places I drive to regularly while avoiding all red light cameras.

I also never make a right-on-red when it is permitted, because that triggers a judgement call from a camera contractor employee to review the video.
