Nassau And Suffolk County NY Red Light Cameras

The number of red light cameras permitted has doubled to 100 in Nassau and 100 in Suffolk.

New red light cameras need roadway sensors to work so the contractors will be putting conduit and sensor loops under the roadway.

We need to find and geocode these cameras and we need your help! Everybody has done an excellent job on the existing cameras and I know we can do it again! Newcomers are invited - we need all the help we can get.

It may be that Nassau County speed cameras will return in the future. We will be ready to report those locations also.

Two speed cameras in one school district?

ciarmer wrote:

The Syosset High School Mobile Speed Camera Unit was again in place yesterday and today.

So, this week, it has been in place on at least three days (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday October 14 - 16, 2014) on South Woods Road.

The mobile speed camera was there again Friday the 17th - every day in the four-day week.

Since the law only permits one speed camera per school district, this means that the fixed speed camera at Baylis School must have been turned off for the week while the Syosset High School camera was operating.

Do we really believe that it was turned off? ATS, after making a big capital investment in the Baylis camera, is going to follow Nassau County's instructions to turn it off for a week with no return on investment?

Good Point dobs108. Who has oversight to ensure no one is issued tickets from a fixed camera on days when the mobile camera is operating in the same school district, and vice versa?

There is no incentive for the county or the contractor to prevent "double ticketing". They each make more money if no one catches them at it.

Individuals have no way of knowing where and when which fixed cameras are issuing tickets, or in which school district mobile cameras are issuing tickets on any given day.

Hopefully it's not a matter of trust.

Speed camera bonanza?

For several days I have gone outside my comfort zone and watched many locations while the speed cameras were active. I am convinced that the expected bonanza of fines is not going to happen.

Some locations are a ghost town where almost all drivers avoid driving there. On busy streets, people are driving too slowly - 10 mph below the speed limit which is 20 mph below the "illegal" speed. They all know the camera is there, and the drivers who don't know about the camera know something is up.

With all my watching I did not see one driver come close to getting a ticket.

20 mobile speed camera units

Newsday columnist Judy Cartwright yesterday stated for the first time that 20 mobile speed camera units would be deployed in Nassau County by the end of the year. Prior to this we never knew whether officials were referring to units or locations.

According to the last speed camera list published in Newsday 10/11, it looks like there will be 41 mobile locations. Ciarmer has more than half of them in his file available for download. We still need to find the remaining locations.

There are also two mobile locations found that were not on the list of 10/11, so we are dealing with a moving target. Nassau County has promised not to provide any more lists or other location info to the news media, meaning Newsday. According to a recent editorial, Newsday does not want to publish the locations of cameras. Nassau has a shell game going on and Newsday is a participant.

If it's all about safety, then no doubt Nassau County will use funds generated by school speed zone cameras in those 56 school districts to install flashing lights outside all 434 public and private schools ASAP. But I won't hold my breath.

I'm Curious

I'm all for protecting children in our schools.
I'm just wondering has any type of study been done to determine just how many accidents occurred where children were hurt within a particular school zone.
Of course there will be accidents, but was the contributing factor due to excessive speed?

I sincerely think that number would be quite low to justify having the speed cameras present. As we know it's all about revenue and the inability of public officials to balance their budgets.

Rally against speed cameras

This appeared in the print version of today's Newsday, 11/14/14:

MINEOLA

Rally against speed cams set for Sunday

Angry Nassau County residents plan to hold a rally in Mineola on Sunday to voice their opposition to the county’s controversial speed camera program.

It is slated to start at 11 a.m. at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building, 1550 Franklin Ave.

“We’re a group of public people who are appalled by what’s being done,” said Woodbury resident Ned Newhouse. Newhouse is one of more than 2,700 members of a Facebook group, “Nassau County Residents Opposing School Zone Speed Cameras.”

Last month, more than 400 furious county residents packed a Jericho elementary school to confront the architect of the program and demand refunds for hundreds of tickets issued in front of the school.

By year’s end, there will be cameras at 56 locations countywide.

Warning Signs

I was bike riding in Oyster Bay the other day and I noticed new warning signs about video enforcement by the Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School (a 20MPH zone which should make good money). However, there is no fixed camera installed anywhere (yet?). I am guessing this is a mobile camera zone.

I still need to head further south the the James H. Vernon School on NY-106 and see if there is new signage there. Being a main thoroughfare, that area is ripe for making a lot of money.

--
I support the right to keep and arm bears.

Roosevelt Elementary School

Ciarmer is way ahead of us - Roosevelt is already in the Mobile Speed Camera Nassau file. However, Vernon is not. You are right - this will be a big moneymaker!

I was at Vernon about a week ago and there were no signs or camera. Remember that they are entitled to one fixed camera in the Oyster Bay school district and Vernon could be it. On the other hand not every district will have a fixed camera.

dobs108 smile

James H. Vernon School signs

Looked at James H. Vernon School on route 106 in East Norwich again today. There are no Nassau County signs, "Speed Enforced by Photo/Video," and no fixed speed camera.

In my opinion there are problems there with the school zone speed limit signs. They were installed by the Town of Oyster Bay after the Town Board passed a resolution, so the county cannot fix this on their own.

The school zone is much too short for a mobile speed camera or a fixed camera on a single pole, because the camera looks at the back of a vehicle driving away.

There is a combination of two types of signs, "School Days, 7 AM - 6 PM," and "When Flashing" with flashing yellow lights. (which were off on Sunday) These two cannot be combined. They must use one or the other.

The "When Flashing" sign with the lights is in the middle of the short school zone, not where the school zone begins. There will be a big expense in moving it because of the underground wiring to operate the lights.

Unfortunately, defects like this exist at most of the speed camera locations, while officials are insisting that the speed limit signs are properly posted.

school speed limit signs not visible on lexington avenue

Aardvark wrote:

...warning signs about video enforcement by the Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School...

The school is on West Main Street in Oyster Bay which has the proper 20 mph school speed limit signs posted. The problem is a tee intersection with Lexington Avenue in front of the school.

This is a busy route to Bayville. You drive on Lexington and turn left on West Main to go to Bayville, and there is no school speed limit sign or school sign of any type on Lexington. Once you turn left on West Main you are already in front of the speed camera.

Another case of improper signs!

perpster wrote:

I hear what GlobeTurtle (and others) are saying. But, I think the Mobile Camera Locations should be included.

There are a finite number of mobile camera locations. It is not a large or overwhelming number.

The authorities are clearly playing Gotcha (see ciarma's post above about the speed van not going into operation until the road is empty, and devoid of students, buses, parents) for cash.

I would MUCH rather have a false warning than a ticket. In fact, the utility and trust of POI Factory's RLC and Speed Camera files would GO DOWN IMHO if I have to wonder if there's a known mobile location in an area unfamiliar to me, that has been intentionally left out of the file.

Realistically, how often would a driver encounter false warnings? There is a limit to the number of allowed locations, and most drivers aren't likely to be driving in many different school districts on a given trip. So, very few likely false warnings. Besides, they won't be false if the speed van happens to be operating there that day. Drivers are reasonably likely to be driving in an unfamiliar area and not even know there is a school coming up (many are well off the road and not visible or expected).

It really is a DIS-service to POI users to NOT include them.

The suggestion for an optional poi file is a good one, as is possibly using different text in the warning. Maybe also utilize a new/different icon/sound for the mobile sites.

New technology has made new gotcha tactics available to be used against drivers. Not only are they available, they are deployed. I respectfully submit that POI Factory should be flexible enough to arm its users against these new tactics. Particularly when it is well documented that safety concerns are a mere fig leaf for a money grab.

Cyclops uses the above logic, and since the alert is almost constant in DC, one basically says I'll just obey the law everywhere, or follow traffic.

In other words, Cyclops does have a mobile alert, when 99.9999% of the time there is no mobile setup there.

Not exactly the same

johnnatash4 wrote:

All speed cameras in New York State must be in school zones. Because of the way the speed camera law was written for Nassau and Suffolk counties limiting the number of all types of speed cameras to one in each school district, and the large number of fixed speed cameras which have been or will be installed, the flexibility of moving mobile speed cameras around is inherently limited.

It is not similar to other areas where mobile speed cameras can be moved to many locations every day. Our observation of various mobile locations has shown that the unit is there very often.

Because of the above mentioned restraints, Nassau and Suffolk counties could be the best example of an exception to the POI Factory rule of no mobile cameras in the file.

Ciarmer has posted an accurate file of the (now 22) mobile locations for anyone to download, but I do not expect visitors to our area to make use of it. The visitors will pay the price when ticketed by a mobile camera.

Following the thread, you have stated many times the school zone must be posted and stated the mobile unit is a van or SUV. This begs the question of is the driver observant? If you start posting mobile locations in one area, how long before other areas will be clamoring for their mobile locations to be present also? Then you have the Cyclops/Trapster issue of so many false alerts you begin to disregard the real alerts.

How often does a person inadvertently speed through a school zone? Enforcement is nothing new in these areas, I expect to see a cruiser there 1/3 times, closer to 3/3 at the peak.

I know we're all on different pages, but from personal experience, the Garmin is going off almost all the time in DC. So much so that passengers ask for it to be muted. Which really just translates into being on your best behaviour, because it pays off to do so.
