Garmin Viago

New navigation app from Garmin, awful business model. Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere. A $0.99 app that will cost up to $100 if all in-app purchases go with it. All for a service some provide (near) free.

Reply back from Garmin on transferring Favorites. Followed up and submitted idea to transfer favorites and install custom pois. Need others to do same to give us a chance to get the features we want.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

There is not a way to transfer favorites from a Nuvi to any of our Android applications at this time. Suggestions for improvements to our products can be submitted to much greater effect at www.garmin.com/ideas

It would be nice if Garmin

It would be nice if Garmin actually made some positive movement on the App. They have an opportunity here to get the product up to speed and close the gap on the other "apps" that are into Gen 3+, BUT knowing Garmin they will probably miss out on the opportunity to build on the Garmin community's input...

I need to

Agreed. I haven't even tried one of these Garmin Smartphone apps...they all seem to lack some key function or feature that is useful. This seems to follow their stand-alone GPS models as well...they've been doing it for years and years now and I see no reason for them to change.

My 3490LMT was the last GPS I purchased. I would buy something that surpassed (in features) the GPS's from the past but alas, they pull old and useful features out of units at every model change. I haven't seen anything after the 3490 that would make me want to upgrade as many times, these upgrades are actually downgrades due to the yanked features. rolleyes

Speed alert.

I used the Viago app on my Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 for the first time yesterday on a short (250 mile) road trip. For add-on's I have the Maps to Go (full NA), Sounds and Buildings, Safety Kit ($31 total).

The biggest pleasant surprise I had in my test was the speed alert. At highway speeds, it gives you a 5 MPH cushion. When driving on the interstate (speed limit is 70 MPH), the speed indicator would turn red at 75 MPH and give an audible "ping" sound. On 55 MPH secondary roads, the alert would sound at 60, etc. I looked in Settings, and sure enough, this is configurable with 5 MPH as the default. This is something we have asked for on the nuvi for several years, and it is nice to see that Garmin put the feature in Viago.

Overall, I found the Viago app to be very usable. The lane assist arrows seemed to be a little inconsistant. The multiple arrows would show briefly, then go back to the default single arrow turn indicator. If you weren't looking at the right time, you would miss the lane assist. I wish they would leave the multiple arrows displayed as you approach the turn, like they do with the nuvi. I was also a little disappointed to see that Garmin implemented Junction View as full screen instead of split screen.

When looking for a gas station, I couldn't find a way to search "along the route". As has been discussed by others in this thread, Garmin has a way to go to get fully functional features for search, POI and Favorites. But in general, I was impressed with the Viago app. I hope Garmin continues to improve and develop it.

Coming from Alan (who's opinion I trust), this may be a kick in the pants for me to try out this app. I'll be running on an iPhone 5 so I would hope there would be no glaring differences between the Android and iOS versions.

Freezes while routing on my iPhone 4

I was excited about downloading this app. I've done quite a bit of experimenting and I'm frustrated that after a short time the app freezes when following a route. I've installed maps to go and I also did a complete reinstall only to still experience the problem.

I have had a chance to test it some myself on my Samsung Note 8.0 and I must say so far I'm more impressed with it than any other navigation app I have tried before Viago. I have the app, lifetime maps and the real directions with spoken streets add-ons and so far my total investment is less than $21.

Very quick and extremely smooth operation while navigating, the only problem I have is that finding a secure place to set the tablet while using the app is a little tricky.

No trip log, 3 data fields

A couple other things that caught my eye ...

There is no trip log ... not a big deal IMO, but sometimes it is nice to be able to see where you have been.

You can select up to 3 data fields to display on the top bar. This is one less than my nuvi 3597 (on the side bar), but it didn't really bother me missing one data field. With all the screen real estate on the Note 8 (operated in portrait mode), lots of the map was visible, although at highway speeds, there was not much detail for side roads. I didn't try messing with zoom, so maybe it is possible to show more detail. Just like my 3597, when navigating a route, it shows the next turn on the top line and the street you are driving on on the bottom line.

Anybody else running this on iOS? According to what I'm reading (especially App Store reviews), seems like the Android offering is better in regards to bugs and issues. Can anyone comment on how it performs on iOS on say, an iPhone 5 (not the S)?

The reviews in the App Store make out the app to be pretty dismal on the iOS side... sad

Runs fine on my iPhone 5c

DorkusNimrod, Viago runs just fine on my iPhone 5c and on my wife's iPhone 5c ... both on 7.1.2 iOS.

I, too, am impressed with the app. I've spent $21 to get the basic app, Off-line map (US & Canada), and the 3D Buildings and Spoken Street Names (which includes the necessary voices to speak the names.

I was glad that my beloved Karen was included in the 3D Building and Spoken Names (Although I think my wife is catching on.)

We don't keep our GPS's in our cars ... so one of the things I like best is the fact that since we always have our phones, we'd always have access to Viago.

The off-line, cellular data turned off for Viago, works great ... especially since my wife and I shared a 2gb data plan.

We also have iPhone charge cables in our cars ... and find you really need to keep the iPhones plugged in because Viago will drain your battery quickly.

The app, iPhone and bluetooth feature in my wife's 2015 Subaru Forester works ok ... but since my wife is always playing music, Viago's spoken directions seem a bit clipped on the front end.

All-in-all, it's worth the $21 I have invested, especially if Garmin improves the app, honors the lifetime map updates, and eventually allows us to add POI's.

We have 32 gb iPhones ... and have plenty of room to install the Viago components ... which with the off-line map, probably take up 2.3 gb.

Thanks for your input on this, cbwatts I have the 16GB iPhone 5 (not the s) so storage space can be tight...but anything is doable. I pretty much always hover around 5GB free but there's alot more content that just sits so it's easily deletable. I'm on iOS 7.1.2 as well.

Categories

I'm using the Android version, and I have an issue where I cannot select multiple categories (POIS) to show on the map.

When I first installed, multiple categories were checked marked and I chose the option to "Unselect All", now I can only choose one at a time. Does anyone else have this issue?

Viago Safety Kit

Ok, I've got $21 invested ... basic Viago, Maps to GO, 3D and Spoken Street.

I'm thinking about adding Viago Safety Kit ... speed limit alert, school zones, active lane guidance.

Is this worth another $9.99 of my hard earned money?

Does the school zone work well? How does the speed limit alert worth (I know you can set 5 or 10 above, but is the alert a single tone, or a constant tone?)

Any real live experience with this option? Thanks

It's like they have in the higher end Nuvi units it works fairly well. Someone did a post that it appeared the speed limit alert was configurable and didn't alert until you were 5 over s the default.

No clue. I don't have the app and have no intention of purchasing it.

Speed alert and traffic.

The speed alert gives a single ping sound each time the speed crosses the threshold. For example if the speed limit is 70 MPH and you use the default 5 MPH threshold, you will get the ping when your speed reaches 76 MPH. If you drop back below the threshold then speed up again, you will get the ping again.

The speed alert threshold is configurable but only to 5, 10, 15 or 20 MPH. Interestingly there is no setting for a 0 MPH thresold. I wish they would just let you put in a number of your choice instead of restricting it to these 4 values.

As I understand it, the traffic addon is a live app that requires a data connection ... so it wouldn't work on my wifi only tablet.

I have not seen a school alert yet, but then most schools aren't in session right now.

I will hold off on the traffic as I have a small data (at&t pay as you go) on my tablet.
I probably don't need the speed alert as it won't let you put in 0, but the school zones would be nice. I think they are not on sale so will wait and see if they go on sale.

I think the traffic is the only one on sale I don't have so I don't have to hurry as I can't use it.

I did think about the Europe to Go maps but don't know when we will go again so will probably wait and pay full price if we do go to Europe again.

Thanks again.

Has anyone else noticed that

Has anyone else noticed that the volume is quite low? I have my Note3 volume as high as it will go and the Viago system volume as high as it will go but if you have radio on or the ac on high, you can't hear the directions at all. If its very quiet and no ac on high or radio on, I can understand the directions. Compared to my Nuvi , which can be very loud, if turned up to 100%, next to it, the Viago is a whisper.

Same Issue

I have the same low volume problem with my Iphone 5S. The volume is only slightly louder on the Ipad Mini.

Since I have a Bluetooth enabled vehicle, the solution for me was to go to settings/Audio/Audio Output and select Bluetooth. The volume is then controlled by the vehicle audio system which I can crank up as loud as I want.

Unfortunately, this isn't a solution for everyone.

Thanks. At least its not

Thanks. At least its not just me. Maybe Viago will get the hint and work on that. I'll look for a way to contact support and see if they are working on a solution.

Volume

The volume level was quite acceptable on my Galaxy Note 8. I had the volume at about 80%. I am using the Samantha voice. It will not go as loud as my nuvi 3597 speaker in the cradle, but still was plenty loud enough to hear the prompts.

I did some testing with using the music player while navigating. When Viago gave a prompt, it would mute the music player until the prompt was complete. The prompt was generally louder than the music I was playing. If I was going to use it this way regularly, I would plug it into my car radio and play it through the car speakers ... haven't tried that yet tho.

I found that the Active Lane Guidance of Viago behaves the same as in the 2012 and newer Nuvi Advanced and Prestige series. An animation guides you along the proper lanes before you get to the exits/interchanges. I like the feature. Some people, on the other hand, found it annoying.

How do I configure the speed threshold. Can't seem to find it in the settings at all.

Speed Alert.

If you have purchased and installed the Safety Kit, you will find the Speed Alert setting under [blue triangle] > Settings > Audio > Speed Limit Alert.

You can turn the alert on or off and select the speed threshold. Unfortunately you have to choose between 5, 10, 15 or 20 MPH. I hope Garmin changes this in a future update so you can specify a specific number. Even if they don't do that, they need to include 0 MPH as an option.
