I haven't noticed any difference

I use 3D for the most part.

I just switched from the blue "3D Arrow" to "Twinkle" for the season.

Track Up

3D on my 680 seems to lag the actual position of the car. Track up updates quickly and I see no lag between calculated and actual position.

nuvi in car: 3D / hiking with eTrex: North Up

I like the 3D maps for driving with my nuvi and City Navigator map.

But for hiking at a couple miles/hour with a topo map displayed on the GPS, I like North Up. Track Up, either 2D or 3D, can be confusing since any stoppage in hiking may tend to have the GPS think I'm changing direction every few seconds, and it tries to reorient the map in the direction it thinks I'm going.

In the rare times that I set my nuvi to use a topo instead of City Navigator while driving, I generally switch to 2D, either North Up or Track Up, depending on my mood.

They all have their uses

When we were driving through a national forest area where there were few roads, a more zoomed out view in North Up mode worked best. For one thing, it made it really easy to compare the GPS display against the forest service map because they were oriented the same.
In the city with streets very close together, I still like 3D the best, though.

3D Mode

I use 3D mode 99% of the time.

Track up exclusivly

its all i use

3D Mostly

My preference is 3D, it seems to give a longer range forward look with more detail nearby. Occasionally I'll use track up. I have a more difficult time remaining oriented with north up.

I been using track up. When I Was using 3d before I always miss the turn. Maybe I was a newbie at the time with my GPS. I will try the 3D again and see if it make a difference now.

2D, track up mode exclusively...

This is what I am used to, going as far back as my eMap. Just personal preference but I feel too confined in 3D mode and cannot see nearly as many of my favorites on the map screen as I can in 2D.

2D Track up

I started using 3D because it was cool looking, but I've found that for me, using 2D track up gives me a better look at the surrounding area. I also get a more detailed view of the map. It just works better overall for me. I tried North up, but that is just confusing when driving. If I was hiking, then I'd definitely go with North up.

depends

I mostly use the 3d view. The 2d seems more accurate though.

Track Up and North Up

When traveling to a calculated location, I like Track Up. It gives me a better feel for the next turn.

When local, I like North Up. Gives a better situational awareness.

I have tried the other modes but I use 3D when traveling. Just a personal preference. I like to watch the map move while driving.

Track Up 100%

On the c580, 3d does not give me as much area information I like. I prefer track up so that when the screen shows a left or right turn, I know the car goes the same way.

In a strange area using north up, if you are driving south it can be hard. You can at times move opposite what the screen shows.

From previous reports on some Garmin's and my initial experience with 3D mode on my Magellan, I have not used 3D for more than a couple of minutes because it initially appeared to have less detail, didn't show POIs as good, didn't automatically zoom according to your speed, and couldn't scroll the display.

After reading this thread, I think I should switch it to 3D and leave it there for a while to be sure my initial impression was correct.

I suggest this might be a good thing for anybody to do if they have been using 2D or 3D pretty much exclusively from the beginning. Your unit may have features that you don't even know about. mrgreen

I know what you mean. My old Magellen 3225 (Costco only) bricked itself after a firmware upgrade, but it had been locking up and not booting at all for a while. I hated the 3D mode on that. But, I got a Nuvi 260w from costco (Returned the Magellen, got full price back) and the 3D mode is MUCH nicer. It changes scale depending on speed and nearness of next navigational change. Odd the first few times I saw it zoom in when approaching a corner/exit.

Please attend this survey

I will draw a statistic diagram after most of us done. It's really interested in knowing what is the way most of people adapted to do the navigation. Thanks everybody.

2D travel direction up

I prefer the 2D to the 3D because it is more like a paper map. I use travel direction up with it. When I was using it in the air North up made more sense.

Statistic result

3D 15 people
Track Up 14 people
North Up 4 people
All 2 people

So, most people prefer 3D. Thanks for you guys.

Let's tie it up!

I use 2D on my Nuvi. 3D didn't do a whole lot for me except make it a liitl more difficult to see what was coming up ahead or seeing possible alternate routes paralleling my current route.

Depends on the vehicle

I use north up almost exclusively when I'm flying, but almost always use 3D track up when in the car. I find it is easier to relate the aeronautical charts to the display with N up, but I've found that most pilots choose track up. This makes sense as geologic features, airports, etc., are easier to pick out at altitude as you can determine the direction and distance just by looking at the map.

In the car I usually use 3D and zoom out a little bit so at a glance I can see the direction and approximate angle my upcoming turns will take. I almost never use 2D track up but do use 2D north up zoomed way out to show my direction of travel and overall position on longer trips.

Track up, North Up, 3D, which one is the fatest display?

I have Nuvi 350 3d is fattest diplay. I think they are redraw the same. I left in 3d for the vehicles.

Mark

I used to be

a NORTH UP kind of guy. It was intuitive to me. However, as my eyes get older, the "3D" view seems to offer the best display. However, if I'm lost and have no idea where I am, I will revert to north up to get my bearings again.

Tried all three

of them but didn't find any true display speed difference among them on our 260. If, and that's a big if, there might be some small delay in 3D with possible lag in the actual position of the car. Doesn't seem to be consistent. All said and done....our preference is still 3D. It seems to give a longer range forward look with more detail nearby. Our 2 cents worth!

3D still leading
