Garmin Viago

New navigation app from Garmin, awful business model. Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere. A $0.99 app that will cost up to $100 if all in-app purchases go with it. All for a service some provide (near) free.

I did a search on Garmin

I did a search on Garmin and there is no manual for the Garmin Viago.
I just emailed Garmin to see if they would give me any information about adding our POIs to the app.
Will see what I get.

I don't believe that *any* of Garmin's smartphone apps will let you add user-loaded/created POIs. This was part of a discussion in another forum.

Basically, it's thought that Garmin would rather have you buy an actual nuvi unit than create an app where you can do *everything* that a nuvi does. And an app that does *everything* that a nuvi can do at the app's current price point (and even if it doubled later on) doesn't seem very profitable. Even the much more expensive Street Pilot app doesn't let you add user-loaded/created POIs.

But I commend your effort in trying... cool

I have CoPilot on my Nexus 7 and am able to add POIs. Looks like there should be a way with Viago on the Nexus 7 as I am able to access the files. Will keep trying just in case. smile

Is this an official feature of the app or something not official and a "backdoor method" such as copying the POI file into a key folder within the app? I truly don't know, which is why I'm asking.

Maybe someone will create something like this for Garmin Viago. Or, possibly Gary will simply add it to the existing document.

Here is the post to load POIs to CoPilot. Hopefully there will be one for Viago.

Updates and custom pois.

This is the answer I received from Garmin on installing custom pois and map updates.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

Adding customer POIs are currently not a Garmin supported feature.

All mapping comes with lifetime updates, including the streaming mapping. We are releasing at least one update per year, if not the 4 yearly updates available to our PND devices.

Update 1.0.2 today has fixed the problem navigating to contacts

rjrsw wrote:
mgarledge wrote:

Has anyone used the route to contact and did it work?
I can not get mine to work.
It looks like my Google Contacts are not formatted correctly to use.

Found the same thing contact with an address will not find the address.

I purchased the app for $1 and the NA map download for $10 so for a total of $11 I got everything I would want including photo real junction view and panorama terrain view that both were no cost options with the map download option.

The map download, traffic live and the app are on sale for 1/2 price through July 13th:

http://blogs.wsj.com/personal-technology/2014/06/17/garmins-...

Received an update this morning and I can confirm that Garmin has fixed the problem that would not find the address in my contacts and navigate to it.

"What's New

Version 1.0.2 (1697):

- Improvement for parsing of contact addresses (navigate to contacts from phone address book)

- Fix for an issue in Traffic Live

- Fix for several application crashes reported through Google Play

Thank you for all your comments. We are working constantly on further improvements?

Contacts

Contacts is working on some of mine but one that is in Texas can't be found in Viago because the program pulls it up in Tennessee even though all the information in the contact is correct, has Texas and a Texas zip code.
Still a little work needed.

EDIT: I re typed the contact that was causing the problem and it works great now.
All the contacts I have tried have worked great.

they should worry about building products that work flawlessly with enough internal memory for the foreseeable future, without funky routing, etc. but what do I know?

Drains battery fast

Downloaded the app and Map-to-go, just to get a feel.

Did a test drive of ~20min. The battery on my Moto X was down by an extra ~25%. It would have drained the battery in just a bit over one hour. With my normal usage, the Moto X battery can last typically for more than two days after a full charge.

Be sure to use the car car charger for the phone if you are to use Viago for long. I will stick with my 3597 for a while.

Cameras

Since no means to support custom pois at this time.Sure someone will figure it out sooner or later. In the mean time I at least wanted to have the POI Factory cameras.Using the Radardroid Pro version I was able to install the camers. Not sure if the lite version will do it or not.You may want to try it. https://play.google.com/store/search?q=Radardroid%20pro&c=ap... .All I did was connect Android Smartphone to computer and put the csv files in the import folder of the App then went back to phone and imported them. Setting for distance etc.

what map file?

I am on the iPhone 4S, I downloaded the APP and about $60 worth of features. To save space, I elected to download the LOWER 49 STATES and not the NORTH AMERICA MAP since I dont need the extra locations the NA maps have. Well, it appears none of the options I purchased work with the lower 49 states map except traffic. I could not get real directions, 3d, junction view (lane assist) etc to work. DO I NEED the NA maps or will the LOWER 49 STATES map work? everything I read within the program says NORTH AMERICA .. this would be a bag thing if Garmin REQUIRED the North America MAP file when the LOWER 49 states is essentially the same thing. Can anyone confirm this??

$21 dollars in

Ok, I'm $21 into Viago ... and feel cheap ... but like dahauss, I didn't download the whole NA offline map, only downloaded USA and Canada.

I can't get spoken street names to work, even though I've download the 3D buildings and Voice $9.99 with the $9.99 offline maps.

I've selected the larger voice files (>20 mb), and still not working.

Interestingly enough, I think Garmin changed the iTunes Store description for the 3D/Voice $9.99 download.

I swear it use to state that you DID NOT need to download the 3D/Voice if you were using OFFLINE maps.

Today, it states that you only need the option if you are using OFFLINE maps.

Am I going crazy?

Click on the blue triangle top left. Select settings,Audio,Touch Languages and Voices. If English Michele is marked.Go to bottom and touch More languages and voices.Select Jack or Samantha. Make sure to download it. Go back to Languages and voices and put mark in your selection. It will play back example using street names.

How did you find out about the fix?

That solved my problem. I had added the "Real Directions" option but was getting no real directions or street names that were supposed to be there after I bought that option.

I cannot believe that they do not tell you about the voice selection change that is needed to make it function when you buy the optional upgrades.

The Michelle file is only 1.9MB and does not support the real directions or street names, after downloading Samantha that has a file size of 30MB which is 15 times that of Michelle voice it now works.

Selected Samantha as you detailed and it says right there that it "Says Garmin Real Directions" and all is working now.

I do believe that the time I have spent on trying to get my POIs loaded I could have "created and saved" them.
Will start saving the ones I use the most and the ones I need for my next vacation and see how much time it takes.

With my luck just as I get them all saved then Garmin will come up with a way to download the files.

Thanks

To the good advice here, I finally got Viago working with smaller Off-Line download (US and Canada only), in addition to Buildings and Voices to say street names.

Total in was $21. And am happy with operation so far.

I was happy to see my beloved Karen's voice work!

I find I do have to keep the iPhone plugged in via a car cord, because it does suck down the battery (as previously mentioned).

Using primarily OFF LINE with Cellular Data turned off ... Hey, I only have a 2GB data plan with Verizon (which I share with my wife.)

Does anybody know how/when Garmin will deliver the map updates. I know they said there would be only 1 a year ... but will it be "forced" auto background download ... or will we be notified to download a new map in the "Shop?"

Guess it doesn't matter ... but it's going to be a huge download when it happens.

I have also noticed the battery drain. Hopefully future updates will improve this. I use the Samantha voice to get the Street names for buildings and sound. So far pleased with the app especially the search off line. They do need to include features that we are used to. Like custom pois and transferring favorites. If you set your Viago app to automatic update that will take care of notification on map update.

If it's anything like Garmin's Navigon app, you'll get a notification upon opening the app when there's an update available, and you initiate the update preferably when connected to power and wifi.

I have the Viago application

I have the Viago application installed on my Galaxy s3, s4 and Note 3, all with the exact same components and complete map of the USA, including "samatha" voice. With my s3 and s4 they both work gps mode only, no wifi or data connection. HOWEVER, with my Note 3, when I disconnect the data AND the wifi, leaving only a gps connection, when I try to navigate, I always get the pop up message: Failed to connect to the server. This can be due to the following reasons: there is no wifi connection..... the server is unavailable .... or the sim card is blocked...... Anyone have any idea what is wrong or what adjustment I need to make? both of the other phone work perfectly in gps mode only, without wifi or data connection.

I had the same problem you outlined in your post here.At first I downloaded all North America maps and got same error with no wifi. I later went back to tools then download manager, maps to go and selected US and Canada.Even though North America still checked before and after download. That corrected the problem.Make sure you have additional files checked also.

Had not given much thought to having extra map download.Thinking it just was overwritten with new ones.

Went back and connected Smartphone to computer.Found drive for Smartphone then clicked on SD Card,Android folder,data,com.garmin.android.apps.viago,files and then the Garmin folder.Once opened located the map files.D2338160A.IMG is 2.10 GB North America map.
D0322240A.IMG is 1.88 GB US and Canada.

Made a copy of the North America map then deleted it.After reboot opened up the Viago App,touched blue triangle top left, tools, download manager then maps to go.North America no longer checked and US and Canada had the check mark.Turned off wifi and tested. All is set.Don't attempt without backup.I keep extra back up on another SD card.

Favorites - Organize

When I save my favorites I put an abbreviation for the city in front of my POI. FW Tommy's Hamburger, Azle Mark Deans BBQ.

That way since they are alphabetized I have each city together. Makes them a little easier to manage and find.

I hope this changes on a update. To more in line when selecting poi from where to. On the top right side if you touch the horz lines you get option to sort by distance, name and relevance. Relevance being the default. Changed mine to distance like I am use to. Favorites should be the same.

Another discovery. If you select where to then the car for navagation. Go back and select another location to get option to add to route .Once you are in navagation. Touch 3 horz lines top right to get itinerary and route overview.

Everything works fine with the NA map deleted now and no longer have the occasional starting problems when not connected to wifi.

If you still have the check mark and you have data on SD Card.Go back to your device and check and see what you have internally. Same as SD card click on Android until you get to the Garmin Folder and see what is showing. I have all files on the SD card.

Checked the internal and it is still empty, after I deleted the map file my SD card free space increased by that 2GB+ amount so definitely was deleted but that map that was deleted is still checked.

I have the exact same issue, I deleted the "lower 49 states", but it is still checked marked.
