If only it were that easy.

There are several reasons for the various issues reported earlier that can be understood by reading the full thread, although I'm not sure that reading the entire thread is a good use of anyone's time if the update went well for you.

I don't

ttysonjr wrote:

I don't think it's possible to do a map update anymore without updating the firmware first. I seem to recall that Garmin forces any available firmware update onto the device before the map update will begin.

Still Out Of Luck

The Map Updater never gave me the option to enter a product key. When logging in online my account does not even show the 2015.10 available. It only shows something like "One Time North America Lifetime Updates" with an expiration of June 2014.

The last update (about a year ago) went fairly smoothly. But this one is a summa gun smile

I have updated everything, even the Garmin USB firmware update. I will wait for Garmin to respond to my ticket and see what they say.

Try GarminMapUpdater again and look for the inconspicuous product key link:

When it brings up the window offering to sell you a map, exit, or enter a code, click:

I would like to enter a product key

Then click the Garmin.com link in the window to open your browser. With the GPS attached,, click Automotive, then Find Map Update, then Device Content. Your product key (mine was 8 letters, all caps) will be displayed. Close the browser window, then paste the product key into GMU and let the download begin.

Note that the code needed is probably a short 8-character code, not the unit ID, SN, map unlock code or anything else.

I ALWAYS UPDATE

The Firmware first before I update the map.

Let me suggest...

ttysonjr wrote:

...that the key, in this map update, was to do as you did and wait 1.5 weeks after its being offered before attempting to try the update yourself, giving time to Garmin to debugify their processes.

Also, you were lucky in that the GPS models you list owning were not among the problem models for this update and it may well be that you chose only to update your two devices, but not install the map to your computer as well, thereby avoiding another of the issues. smile

Dem problem

Just for the heck of it I emailed Garmin about the missing DEM file even though it is not on my unit. I mention that members on our forum have reported the problem. They replied that you could now just re-installed the maps and that would fix the problem.

Garmin software must Recognize the nuvi

maltese falcon wrote:

...Product Key Not Valid...

If you can get Garmin to recognize the 1450, you will not need a product key. Connect the 1450 to the computer and wait while it goes into computer mode. This may be a key point. I always download anything from Garmin with the nuvi connected to the computer. You will not be blocked from going to any page on the Garmin site.

Go to the Garmin site to check Garmin Communicator, a browser plug-in on your computer:

http://software.garmin.com/en-US/gcp.html

If Communicator is installed it could be blocked by the browser. You may have to click on "always trust content from Garmin."

Download the latest version of Garmin Express. Many posters here have had a problem doing this, but others (including me) have done it without a problem. Avoid times when the Garmin servers could be overloaded by others. If there was an error in the coding, it may be fixed by now.

Run Garmin Express. If there is a 1450 icon in the upper left corner of the window it may have a question mark over it and it may not. Play it safe and do not believe that the nuvi is properly detected. Follow alandb's advice and remove the device from Garmin Express (in software), restart the computer (another key point), and let Garmin Express detect it again. Once the nuvi is detected, update the firmware first as ttysonjr has said. Once it is detected and Garmin records indicate that this nuvi deserves an updated map, you will be able to download it without a product key.

Thanks to all that came and helped all the users having problems with GMU, GE & 2015.10.

I was able to get my 2 Garmins updated with a little work and no help, but many users are newbies to the Garmin world and don't know where to start or all the tricks.

Thanks folks for stepping up again, when needed.

Firmware up to date

I forgot to mention that I also installed the update to my computer, it now appears in Mapsource and that I had done a firmware update check before I started the map update. One thing that I noticed, when I went to the myMaps page on the 2555 it shows both the 2015.10 and the 2014.30 maps with a green check mark in both boxes. I unchecked the 2014.30 box and everything seems to be running OK but is the old map still on my unit somewhere. I thought that when you did the update it deleted the old maps on the GPS.

Firmware + map update

If you have an older firmware version on your unit that you absolutely don't want to update here's what to do.

1- Know what the most recent firmware version is available for your unit.

2- Go into your GarminDevice.xml file and open with notepad.

3- Search for software version. You will see the version your unit is currently using. Change that version number to the most recent version available for your unit and save the file. Don't unplug nor power off the unit and proceed in doing the map update.

Voila, you'll have bypassed the forced firmware update smile

Date: 05-24-2015

Well that was a waste of time, I just upgraded to the 2014.40 map 2 days ago and it took over 2.5 hrs. sad

2460

Updated my 2460 overnight via Garmin Express. Woke up to a "didn't complete error" message. There was a "retry" button on the screen so I hit that and a two minutes later all was complete and appears fine. I'll use it today and see if it really is OK.

If lost from the last update

If you lost the gmapdem.img from the last update (2014.40), it may be that you have a very large file called D2248000B.IMG which the map update should have renamed to gmapdem.img. If you still have D2248000B.IMG and see that it's the same filesize as the current gmapdem.img, you should move the D file from your nuvi to your computer backup. The D file takes up a lot of space and does nothing--in future map updates, that file may result in too little free space on the nuvi to hold the entire map update. More on D2248000B.IMG can be found here:

DOWNLOADED TWO MAP UPDATE.

The Gmapdem.img was not with the download. This tell me that Garmin did not fix the problem.

--

Are you using GE or MapUpdater?

It seems Garmin did not fix the problem if you use MapUpdater but they did fix it with GE. The first time I downloaded 2015.10, I lost gmapdem.img, but when I downloaded it again a few days later, it was included with the update. From what I have been reading, MapUpdater does not include the fix.

vehicle oddity

I updated one of the two family 3790LMTs using Garmin Express yesterday, then the second today. Yesterday's update worked properly with no anomalies that I noticed, and on exiting GE I was found myself setting some configuration options to disable it from starting itself up when I plug in a unit, and also from checking for updates on its own, so maybe this time I'll be willing to leave it installed.

At first glance today's install went very well--with the plus that it clearly relied on yesterday's download, so moved to the installation phase quite soon and was done in much less elapsed time than yesterday's.

But one thing clearly got fouled up. Long ago I downloaded the space shuttle "vehicle" to my wife's unit and she has happily used it. But on restarting the unit after the map update the vehicle displayed was something else, and the shuttle was not offered at the configuration menu point (though several other vehicles were, including at least one I downloaded at the same time).

Happily I had a full backup of my wife's unit from June 2013, and found it had a vehicle directory with the shuttle file. But in preparing to copy it I was surprised to see that my wife's vehicle directory had a file of the same name, but a couple of hundred kilobytes smaller in size, and with a timestamp of today, not sometime in 2008! I overwrote her non-functioning file with the one from her 2013 backup, and on next trial the shuttle was offered as a configuration option and worked on her screen when selected.

This is strange and rather alarming. It seems likely that the installation process either maimed this file, or else replaced it with something else entirely (I neglected both to save a copy and to do any sort of file comparison to see whether it started off the same). It also seems that somehow the unit software deemed this not a proper vehicle file, so chose to use something else, and did not offer this one in the selection screen.

While the vehicle display is a secondary function, I imagine there are many, many other files for which such maiming or substitution would have much more severe consequences.

I did backup the first unit yesterday--maybe in future I shall return to backing up each of the two units before running updates.

Got the update onto my 260W using GE

I got the update applied to my 260W using the latest Garmin Express. I had to use the cloning method.
No matter what I did, GE would not recognized the SD card.

If you clone, be sure to do the file rename step.

Yes, as far as we've found. GarminMapUpdater 3.3.3 works well with one exception that does not apply to your unit. The nuvi models that offer a digital elevation map (DEM) may lose their DEM map file during the update. Garmin Express was corrected to prevent this but GMU wasn't fixed. It's an easy fix--just keep a copy of the DEM map file (gmapdem.img) on a backup and restore the missing file after the map update.

But for your nuvi 50LM, go for it now or whenever it's convenient for you.

All went well, I guess.
My Nuvi 2450 is working
BUT
Just tried to open BaceCamp and I get a message "Can not open as MSVCP120.dll is missing. I opened BaseCamp before the update.
I told the maps to save to computer and unit.

EDIT:::
The error said to reinstall BaseCamp, so I did.
Now it said MSVCR90.dll missing.

Uninstall BaseCamp then

Uninstall BaseCamp then manually locate and delete the BaseCamp folder, for some reason the uninstall process does not delete it. Then reinstall the latest version of BaseCamp.

Will try that

Thanks.

EDIT:
That worked.
After uninstalling I went to the folder and it looked like the entire BaceCamp was still there. I deleted the folder like you said then re installed and all is good.
Thanks.....

Yes, the files are mostly correct. Your referenced "JVC" file is an unlock file for a previous map version and can be deleted, although its deletion gains you near nothing--the file ending in .JCV is the correct JCV file for 2015.10. If you had received all of North America, your gmapprom.img would be 2,274,880KB instead of your smaller file.

I see that the nuvi 2450 is a 4GB device unlike the 2460 which is a 8GB device

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/34375

so that's probably why you can't get all of North America installed internally to the 2450. You should have been given the option, though, to have all of North America installed to a SD card rather than installing a smaller map internally. Was this not offered or did you choose to install a smaller map internally rather than the full map on SD?

If you haven't removed unneeded files, giving you more room on the 2450, you could try this as well:

I went to the faq for deleting for imformation on how to get more space before I did my update.
I don't believe it asked me if I wanted to save to SD but not sure. I remember a box with all in red, and the next option was selected. I keyed up to the all that was in red and it said not able to put on, can't remember the exact words. It might have said use a SD card but as I don't need Alaska and whatever else it asked right now I keyed down to the next option and installed that. I only have around 164mb left on the 2460 so next time I will save to SD (will pay more attention) if asked.
When I do get another unit I will be sure and find one with a lot more internal memory, although, I had my Europe maps on SD card on the vacation we just made and I could not tell any difference in the performance of the unit.
Thanks for your help. I wanted to make sure I had all I was suppose to have downloaded after the problems I had with BaseCamp after my download.
Thanks again, Mary

update maps

you need to download Garmin Express file to your compture
it will do the work for you
Garmin will ask make sure your GPS is hook-up to your computer also have a SD Card 4GB ready..
Don.

Garmin didn't tell me

I regularly check MYGARMIN.COM to see if a newer map is available. It never told me 2014.40 was out. It also didn't tell me 2015.10 was out, but I read about it here.

I updated my GPS firmware, then updated GarminMapUpdater, then downloaded 2015.10. It went without a hitch.

I am just disappointed that MYGARMIN.COM isn't telling me when the new maps come out.
