City Navigator 2014.40 is out - installation issues

Well, 2014.40 is out as reported elsewhere. Here's some info:
GarminMapUpdater: The current Windows version remains 3.2.2 but it doesn't recognize that my nuvi 2460 is LMT so it offers to sell me a map update.
Ugh, I'm now updating with Garmin Express, which I had to install. It's now updating my 2460 and computer and we'll see what comes of it. I'll report back with results.
[Update] 2460: My 2460 now has just 231 MB free. The gmapprom.img file is 2,204,032KB and the jcv file, D3191120A.JCV is 480,049KB. I do see the previous D....110A.JCV file still on the device taking up 474,294KB.
[Later Update] Garmin Express did succeed in loading 2014.40 to my nuvi 750, 855 and 2460 (each done on a different Windows 7 PC) while GarminMapUpdater failed on each. Garmin Express also either loaded the map to the computer as part of the update or later as a Computer Only update. The 855, even with unneeded files (voices, etc.) removed still was only able to install the Lower 49 states, which also meant that the new map's voice recognition files were not installed. I'll try tomorrow to install Canada and Alaska via MapInstall to a SD card--or possibly try the SD clone technique.
[Febr 6, 2014 summary] Good news, bad news
The bad news is that for most folks, the old GarminMapUpdater program (Windows version 3.2.2) no longer works for map updates.
The good news is that Garmin Express seems to have matured to the point that it actually works for almost everyone. I still dislike having a program running in background that will rarely be needed without pausing or stopping some of its Windows Services, but for now, I expect that I'll keep Garmin Express on my PCs for future use. Garmin Express is also quite good now at installing maps to computer for use with Mapsource or BaseCamp.
The large jcv file for 2014.40 is available as of mid-morning today, so for the folks who have older nuvis that receive a tiny jcv file and for those split-screen nuvi owners who want a full-screen JV, it's there for us.
One great finding that will reduce the load on Garmin's servers which is something that should help Garmin and help us updaters is that Garmin Express keeps the big download stored on users computers so that users with one PC but multiple GPS devices is that a single download from the Garmin server will be sufficient to update all devices and the computer.
charlesd45 also offers the tip (see page 2) that you can configure Garmin Express to prevent it auto-launching when a nuvi is connected to a computer and configure it to Never look for updates.
Finally for this summary, the alandb clone method for installing City Navigator to an SD card (useful for those older nuvis like my 855 that are not auto-offered an install-to-SD option) works fine with Garmin Express.

Get better soon.
I am recovering, quite nicely, from a very successful mitral valve repair surgery. I am not supposed to drive for a few more weeks. Road tests have to wait.
Not hard to guess what I am going to do for the next map updates.
Sorry to hear about the surgery but glad to know all is doing well.

Thanks.
MU works fine, but....
This was the smoothest update I have experienced for my 855. It only loaded North America but I'm not going outside NA so it does not matter.
BUT, when I select Maps on the Nuve 855, it shows that a version of 2013.2 is still present. I can de-select it but I cannot find any reference on the Nuvi about this version being loaded. What I mean is....where is this old file and can/should it be uninstalled/deleted?
Full screen lane assist works fine with the large JCV file. Have not tried the red light function or voice command yet.
If at first you don't succeed....redefine success

Do you have any maps on the SD card? Look for two GMAP files with the same name and delete the earlier one. It also could be a supplemental, so look for one of those as well.

As Box Car suggests, check both the nuvi and any SD card in your 855 for other maps. If back when you installed 2013.2, you let the map update install something smaller than all of North America, then used Mapinstall to install the rest of North America, this supplemental map will be the issue. The 855 is a model not offered the auto-map-update-to-SD, so any map installed to a SD card is one you would have done manually. Your 855 with the current City Navigator should have the following which you want to keep:
1) gmapbmap.* (.img, and maybe a .sum) most likely in the nuvi storage. This is your all-planet minimal-detailed Basemap. Keep this!
2) Either a) or b), depending on where the map is--this is your new City Navigator:
a) gmapprom.* (.img,.gma and .unl, possibly a .sum) if installed to the nuvi, or
b) gmapsupp.* (.img, .gma and .unl, possibly a .sum) if installed to a SD card
If your 855 has gmapprom and gmapsupp files (and you do, given what you've told us), one is the old 2013 map and the other your new 2014 map. Before deleting anything, tell us their filesize and dates. If you have gmapprom and gmapsupp files in the nuvi (not SD card), remember that gmapsupp files in the nuvi will not be removed or overwritten when updating City Navigator and the continued presence of the older gmapsupp files will reduce the amount of the new City Navigator that you can install in future map updates. Especially on the space-limited 855, you don't want unneeded gmapsupp files in the nuvi.
As always, before tinkering, you should have a full backup of all files stored on a hard drive, recordable DVD or some such thing. A good way to test your fix without deleting a file is to rename it, such as gmapsupp.img to gmapsupp.img.disabled. Let us know how things work out. If you have installed some other Supplemental Map (a topo map, for instance), let us know about this before the tinkering begins!
You can increase the size of this and future map updates by removing unneeded files from your 855. Foreign language voice files are prime cadidates for removal. If you do want to install all of North America, you can do this with your 855 by buying an 8GB SD card and using the clone method to install the full map to the card for use with the 855. An 8GB card will be large enough for all of the new City Navigator map update plus the large jcv file.
Solution Found?
CraigW + Boxcar, thanks...
The 4GB SD card ONLY has the JCV file on it. The Garmin/JCV folder has D3060130A.JCV, Redlight-cameras.csv and Speed-cameras.csv files on it. (Plus a text file on cloning)
The Nuvi, however, has a gmapsupp dated 10/8/2013, size 652,800KB. The gmapprom is dated 2/10/2014 and is 1,972,288 KB.
So, I should be able to delete the 2013 file, thus freeing up more space?
Also, under my JCV I have 2 older (short) versions of the JCV file which I renamed 'old' and '2013'. They are not large but I don't need them anymore do I?
Thanks again.
If at first you don't succeed....redefine success
you found 'em
You found the old map. You would be safe in deleting all the old files, but if it makes you feel better, copy them before deleting - just in case.

In addition to GlobeTurtle's comment, I went back through this thread and found your posts.
In the past week or more, I've seen a lot of discussion about lost voices and how to get them back, so I and other users may be thinking that this issue has been solved.
Not to worry, if you're the first to observe or solve an issue, or certainly if you or anyone else posts incorrect info
, you will get replies. In addition to this thread, there are a few other threads about the recent map update, GarminExpress versions, GarminMapUpdater versions, etc. and the messages I read from discussing lost voices may have been in the other threads. We are not ignoring you intentionally.
@crathbun
Thanks for your contributions, and please keep posting. I think I didn't specifically acknowledge your posts because it took me a while to realize I was a victim of the lost voice problem and didn't take the time I should have to look back to see who had reported it previously. My apologies.

Good point. It's odd--after reading about the lost voices using GE as a map updater, I eventually checked my three nuvis that got the map update. For some odd reason, I did not lose any voices, although one nuvi did change my selected voice from Karen to Jack.

I know what you mean crathbun. I too am new to this forum and understand your frustration.
This appears to be one of the older forums and has developed quite a support community .... to their credit!
You may notice that on many threads that it's usually/often the same participants that are the ones conversing, arguing, joking, ranting etc.
I presume that in time, us new guys will be able to contribute more and consequently interact together as well.... perhaps to the frustration of future newbies .....

crathbun & pb46,
Knowing past 'community' history I'd say that when word got out that 2014.40 was available there was a frenzy for many people here to download and install it right away. It always happens that way... And, as has been the case with recent map updates, there was once again many 'issues' with installing this map update that needed to be worked out. Further, when these numerous and varied 'issues' popped up, it happened quickly - and that's when a significant number of people started to really scramble in hopes of figuring out a fix for their particular 'issue'.
As you probably saw, there were a few different threads in the Garmin forum that all-of-a-sudden had a number of people stating a handful of different problems. It was like dozens of people juggling things all while they weaved in and out of one another. I could see that things were getting rather hectic with some people, and looking back on it you probably can too.
When this happens it is common for some members to have an exchange of communication with others, while other members to just explain their problems and/or take advice without any acknowledgement or a 'thanks' given. And, of course there are others that never even post a comment, but are dying to read something that someone has posted that will help them with their particular 'issue'. I could visualize that some people were feeling a fair amount of stress. It's times like that a lot of people generally don't exchange pleasantries even when they've been helped. Please do not take that as being typical of POI-Factory, because it is not. There are lots of very nice, helpful and friendly members here...
All that said - I can assure you that your help, your comments and your advice were not only appreciated but I'm very sure your participation was helpful to a number of people even though they did not acknowledged your contributions or personally give you thanks.
Lastly, now that this map update's hectic run has passed (as we await 2015.10 in three months or so) I'll bet you could easily get a nice and friendly exchange in discussing this or any other topic. Even the topic of why no one acknowledged your help a few days ago, which is what I'm discussing with you right now!
PS - Thank you!

updater
When I bought my 2597 a month or so ago there was a post here that recommended using Map Updater instead of Garmin Express, so when I called Garmin on a different matter I asked the tech support guy about using the map updater and he said that I wouldn't be able to update my maps using the updater. His only explanation was that the program had been changed.
Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.
Thank you for thanking me!

Updating now
I started doing the update using Mapupdater and it told me there was not enough room on the device for the full update which is strange seeing as I have an 8gig memory card installed. It let me install USA and Canada but not North America. Waiting for the install to finish to see what I actually have got.
I have used the memory card for previous updates with no problem. Maybe I have to reformat the card and start with a clean slate.

Install finished
OK, so it says I have 2014.40 North America installed.
When I check the space left I have 142mb internal storage and 5.29gb of free space on the card.
Strange.
Map Updater worked just fine.

Yes, go ahead. For several reasons, I suggest using GarminMapUpdater rather than Garmin Express. If using GarminMapUpdater, you may also want to run Garmin's WebUpdater first.

On a related note
Garmin still hasn't figured out that a North America map update should not have anything from South America included.
What do you consider "South America"???
If you are talking about Mexico, then you are wrong! Mexico is in North America!
Guatemala, Honduras etc are in Central America and they just have main highways but no city/town details!
Thank you for the insulting comments. It's gratifying to know that even on a message board I can see the ugliness of humanity rear its head for all to see. Fortunately, since you decided it was perfectly acceptable to treat me as if I was a first grader, I get to welcome you to school.
Often, the countries in the North America isthmus (Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Panama) are referred to as Central America. This is done as a matter of convenience, for Central America is not a continent and is considered part of North America. Garmin does not include these countries in their North America maps, and in fact does not have a Central America map set at all. For that section of North America various sites sell Garmin-compatible map updates for each individual country. There are also free options: OpenStreetMap or CenRut. I use CenRut.
South America officially begins at the mutual border of Panama and Colombia and includes Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Eduador, Guiana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobango, Uruguay, and Venezuela. It also includes a few dependencies: the Falkland Islands, South Georgia/South Sandwich Islands, and French Guiana.
Q: Garmin's North America map covers the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, The Bahamas, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Barthélemy, and Jamaica. One of these items is not like the others. Which one, and why?
A: French Guiana. Of all the listed locations on Garmin's North America map update, it is the only one located on the South American continent.
You could have saved yourself a little bit of time and could have avoided pissing me off with tactless comments, had you bothered to use the search engine on the site to find where I've discussed this before. Even better, you simply could have looked at Garmin's coverage map and seen it for yourself. Instead, you did...this.
You sir are why an ignore feature would be useful on this board. While I'm inclined to tell you exactly where to go, instead I wish you a good night, for you've ruined mine.
I've often wondered why French possessions are included in the NA maps like St. Bart's, Guadeloupe, and Martinique but it does NOT include St-Martin. Maybe because the island is split in two?
Similarly, why include the Cayman Islands? It's the only British possession included. There is no coverage for Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands, Montserrat, or the Turks & Caicos.
To be honest, I don't understand why all the islands of the Caribbean (except for Cuba, maybe) are not included in the NA maps. They're mostly all very small. When I have gone on vacation to Aruba and St. Maarten, I have to get OpenStreet maps
Also, I am in agreement that French Guiana has no purpose or business being in North America maps as it is in South America.
Florida Part Of South America?
Also, I am in agreement that French Guiana has no purpose or business being in North America maps as it is in South America.
You can also include Florida being present on City Navigator South America.
If you have both North & South America maps active on your Nuvi it will screw up your search function due to double coverage of the same area.
Click on coverage tab and you will see Florida is included.

The City Navigator North includes
Canada and Mexico
plus
Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands (US insular areas))
plus
Cayman Islands, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique and
Saint Barthélemy (which are overseas regions of France)
plus
Jamaica and The Bahamas (which are "commonwealth")
Just guessing, but this list includes places that are destinations of travelers AND which likely have good mapping of the roads.
The City Navigator South includes Florida because it would be a likely destination of travelers.

I received a generic error and fail with MapUpdater. Tried another computer and same result. Both computers had previously worked fine for updating the Nuvi.
I found the installer log file buried in the operating system. It didn't provide me with many details, but it appears to be a generic Windows or .Net error.
Both machines are currently patched with MS Updates.
I can understand French
I can understand French Guiana being included in City Navigator Europe, as it's an overseas dependency of France. I can understand the islands controlled by France in North America also being included in City Navigator Europe. I can understand those same islands being included in City Navigator North America as they are part of the North American continent.
Including French Guiana, located in South America, on a North America mapset? As boneheaded and flat out stupid as including Florida in the South America mapset.
No answer has ever been given for the purpose. I have speculated that it's a "sampler" for the appropriate mapset, but if that is the case I don't think it's really helping Garmin's sales any.

I have a 2450, update said not enough room on unit, I had a sd card with almost 4G free with the Europe map on it and it said not enough room. I am going to Europe so I wanted the update on the same card as the Europe maps.
I just picked the lower 48 states and it loaded to my unit, so all is ok for the trip.
It was Saturday and my unit usually loads in about an hour. It took three hours. A lot of people must have been using Garmin's server.

I think they included Florida in the SA mapset so you would know where to point your raft. Last time I checked, one ocean wave looked pretty much like the last one so you would need the GPS to know which part of the Keys you wanted to land on.

The surprise for me was that it was filmed in Cuba and I assume therefore had the Cuban government's approval for filming. But it certainly didn't make me think life there could be pleasant. I liked it (3 of 5 Netflix stars).
