City Navigator 2014.40 is out - installation issues

Well, 2014.40 is out as reported elsewhere. Here's some info:
GarminMapUpdater: The current Windows version remains 3.2.2 but it doesn't recognize that my nuvi 2460 is LMT so it offers to sell me a map update.
Ugh, I'm now updating with Garmin Express, which I had to install. It's now updating my 2460 and computer and we'll see what comes of it. I'll report back with results.
[Update] 2460: My 2460 now has just 231 MB free. The gmapprom.img file is 2,204,032KB and the jcv file, D3191120A.JCV is 480,049KB. I do see the previous D....110A.JCV file still on the device taking up 474,294KB.
[Later Update] Garmin Express did succeed in loading 2014.40 to my nuvi 750, 855 and 2460 (each done on a different Windows 7 PC) while GarminMapUpdater failed on each. Garmin Express also either loaded the map to the computer as part of the update or later as a Computer Only update. The 855, even with unneeded files (voices, etc.) removed still was only able to install the Lower 49 states, which also meant that the new map's voice recognition files were not installed. I'll try tomorrow to install Canada and Alaska via MapInstall to a SD card--or possibly try the SD clone technique.
[Febr 6, 2014 summary] Good news, bad news
The bad news is that for most folks, the old GarminMapUpdater program (Windows version 3.2.2) no longer works for map updates.
The good news is that Garmin Express seems to have matured to the point that it actually works for almost everyone. I still dislike having a program running in background that will rarely be needed without pausing or stopping some of its Windows Services, but for now, I expect that I'll keep Garmin Express on my PCs for future use. Garmin Express is also quite good now at installing maps to computer for use with Mapsource or BaseCamp.
The large jcv file for 2014.40 is available as of mid-morning today, so for the folks who have older nuvis that receive a tiny jcv file and for those split-screen nuvi owners who want a full-screen JV, it's there for us.
One great finding that will reduce the load on Garmin's servers which is something that should help Garmin and help us updaters is that Garmin Express keeps the big download stored on users computers so that users with one PC but multiple GPS devices is that a single download from the Garmin server will be sufficient to update all devices and the computer.
charlesd45 also offers the tip (see page 2) that you can configure Garmin Express to prevent it auto-launching when a nuvi is connected to a computer and configure it to Never look for updates.
Finally for this summary, the alandb clone method for installing City Navigator to an SD card (useful for those older nuvis like my 855 that are not auto-offered an install-to-SD option) works fine with Garmin Express.

What different on 3.3.3 from 2.4.5???
Garmin nuvi 350 Lifetime Map Updates NT 2018.10
2.4.5
Actually MapUpdater 3.3.3 replaced version 3.3.2. The difference is that 3.3.3 works with the CN NA 2014.40 map update and 3.3.2 didn't.
You might be getting the versions of MapUpdater and Express mixed up.

Used MapUpdater v3.3.3 to D/L & install 2014.40 with no problems
Perfect!!! I used MapUpdater v3.3.3 to download and install 2014.40 without any problems whatsoever.
Damn, I'm glad I waited and didn't use that POS Garmin Express! Why Garmin even has 'Garmin Express' is beyond me...

voice deletion for me also
Turns out, the map update deleted all voices except Japanese, but it left English text, etc. intact.
I used Garmin Express (for the first time in a long time, maybe ever), and at first thought all was well.
My sequence, which might be relevant, was for an 855, than two 3790LMTs. The next day, my wife complained that her 3790 had switched from Jill (American English) to male (probably Jack).
Today I used my 3790 for the first time, and sure enough it was male. I found the settings page for voice, and was shocked to see just two voices on offer--Jack (American English), and Kristine (Latviesu Valoda).
I also tried my standard voice recognition startup command "Listen up, George" which hardly ever fails in decent background noise conditions, and it failed.
In a recovery attempt I launched Garmin WebUpdater, and checked the "I want it" boxes for the various American English voices and also speech recognition.
After disconnect, and two reboots, my 3790 offered me all the voices I had selected for "update", plus Kristine (Latviesu Valoda). Selecting Jill worked, and so did a brief voice recognition test.
Grumble.

I discovered the same thing!
I discovered the same thing on my 2595 just a short time ago!!! The TTS voice set to "Jack" and "Karen" was GONE (which I have always used from the beginning) I had to use WebUpdater to get it back.
Obviously the problems with this iteration of Garmin Express are much worse than first thought. There is NO WAY this can be blamed on my laptop settings, programs, Microsoft or Global Warming! I can't help but worry about what else has been "modified".
I'd suggest everyone fire up a route and confirm who is now talking to you providing the instructions!!

Garmin Express strikes again!
I just discovered a problem with my new 3597LMTHD caused by Garmin Express. When I updated the map a couple of days ago, it apparently removed all my installed voices ... the voice folder was completely empty. I have now removed Express from my computer, so I tried to reinstall the voices with WebUpdater and myDashboard, but none of the English voices were listed as available for update/install? Fortunately I had made a backup before I used Express to update the map, so I copied the voice files from my backup and everything seems to be OK again.
My 755T and 855 nuvis did not lose their voice files. But then I used the cloning method on those two units, so Express never had access to the voice folders. On the 3597LMTHD, I let Express update the unit directly ... big mistake!

Downl;oading 2014.40
Right now GE tells me 3 hours to download full coverage of 2014.40.
But to get there I had to uninstall "NetFramework 4.5" since the update using GE failed several times. Downloaded an update alone, it would not take.
Then downloaded NetFrameWork 4.5.1 and eventually it got installed. After that GE is now installing 2014.40.
I'll leave it alone now and come back in 3 hours to see if it is installed to the computer as well as the Nuvi 855.

1450 update strange update
So far I have never had a problem updating maps. A few problems with large JCV files but not maps.
My last update was using GE. After the update I use local system and MSconfig to shut down GE so it will not run in background.
Today I activated GE it went to the web site and said NO UPDATES. I went to MyGarman an got the message No updates no new maps and you need to download GE. I thought that was kind of strange since GE was running. I clicked on the download and what the heck it downloaded the new map, no notice of a download and I only noticed because Network showed the activity.
I let it download and upon completion no notice the download just stopped. I took a chance and unplugged the 1450 when it came back up shut it down, plug back into PC and the map transferred. Copy & paste the large JCV and all is well!
It too 1 1/2 hour to download usall 30 min to 1 hour I just found this all kind of strange but it turned out OK so I'm a happy camper.

I use a very edited "JACK" version.....
Actually, it's the ONLY voice I have (Deleted others to make room for on-board Maps, prior to start using SD card!)...

Voice Commands
I noticed if you go to GE...you click on devices scroll down to optional updates...there you will find different languages to update got most of them back if not all...I guess if you don't update voices when installing 2014.40 maps then you lose them. Crazy!!
Voice Commands
When you find the optional updates...you check the languages you want to update!

I'm kinda wondering if the recent update of GE right after the 2014.40 maps was available to download was part of the reason why Garmin had a new update for GE because of issues with the voices in English being lost!?
thx i'll try it on the next
thx i'll try it on the next unit - missed it on the first.

Mapinstall, show my device+ SD, but at the time of choose, only can send to the device.
Please, I appreciate if someone of you can tell me how I can save or transfer the new map to a Micro SD card.

Map updater failed, voices lost with GE
Similar results as others with my Nuvi 2495:
- update with Garmin Map Updater (v3.1.14 and v3.2.2) failed.
- installed GE, turned the automatic options off and removed the autostart capability from my pc.
- updated with GE and lost voices, including my fav, Jill.
- ran Webupdater and got the voices back.
In the future, I'll use Webupdater for firmware and GE for map updates, making sure it doesn't remain running on my pc.

I understand, and you are correct. I was actually directing my statement to 'sailornorm'. That said, I realize many people tried using whatever version of MapUpdater they last used to download and install 2014.40 without success. They key (of course) was to wait for Garmin to update their MapUpdater that could successfully be used with their latest Map Update 2014.40, which of course they did. In my case, being lucky helped, since I had gotten 2014.40 using MapUpdater 3.2.2. Apparently I was the only one.
However, for 2015.10 I'll be ready with 3.3.3.

EXCEPT: It never even occured to me to wait/look for for a new release of Map Updater when the new map version was released. After all: why would they release the map and follow up a few days later with a new release of Map Updater? That makes no sense, especially to the average (majority) customer that has never heard of this site or is familiar with the major issues in the past with map updates using Garmin Express or Map Updater.
Most people would go to update their map, see the two available choices available, and pick one. If you DO try and update with a version of either that's no compatible/old, it should seemlessly provide the latest version.

williston, I totally agree 100% with you.
Garmin should have tested their MapUpdater to see if they were pleased with its ability to download and install 2014.40 successfully...and if they were not pleased, then Garmin should have updated the MapUpdater before ever releasing 2014.40 to the public.
For a long time now I have been under the belief that Garmin uses their customers as Guinea Pigs to see what works and what doesn't. (I suspect they monitor POI Factory threads too to see what is working and what isn't! If they aren't, they should!)
Maybe what Garmin should do in the future, before releasing their most recent Map Update, is to release a 'Beta' version of the Map Update for 7-10 days. Then, people that are willing to take a risk or battle through download/install problems can be the 'pigs' for Garmin concerning their download/install programs. That said, the problem is not the map itself - the problem has always been the programs Garmin uses to download and install their map.
For the life of me I do not understand why Garmin Express even exists...

My take on MapUpdater.
I am actually quite surprised that Garmin brought out a new version of MapUpdater. To me it is obvious that they are trying to get rid of both WebUpdater and MapUpdater and make us all use Express.
When the 2014.40 update didn't work with the existing version of MapUPdater, I figured it was by design. I suspect when problems started being reported in Express, Garmin quickly tried to fix Express with a couple of new versions, but was not successful in resolving the issues for all users. So after a couple of days, Garmin had to give in and bring out MapUpdater 3.3.3 for those users that couldn't get Express to work.
And I won't be surprised if MapUpdater does not work for some future map update. I hope I am wrong.

For the first time ever, I was able to use Garmin Express with success. However, I was updating my two 2460's. Agree
alandb: I agree with you. I have used Garmin Express for the last three map updates and never had a problem with it until last week. One thing I noticed pretty quick that made me nervous was that although I only selected the map update for installation, the first thing it did was install the voice and traffic updates anyway immediately/first. (Did anyone else notice this?) I am positive I did not select them: I had removed all the voices except three or four and the traffic translation changes were all non-english... I prefer to use Web Updater for new Voice FW. Lo and behold, Karen/Jill were gone and Jack was at the helm after the GE map update. Think of all the people out there that are only going to find this out on their next big trip to "Wally World" with no way to fix it until they get home. (And wonder what else is not right with the unit.) Not a disaster really, but it would aggravate me to no end. Garmin Express failed me this time and my only recourse was to select re-install map and cross my fingers. This took another 2-3 hours. A couple of days later I discover the voice issue. Not good.

voice issue
Voice issue can be fixed through GE...if you open GE and click on device... scroll down til you see optional updates click on languages files drop down... put a check mark to what language you want on your garmin unit... then click add to updates and let unit update. This worked for me after losing voices...I think it added on a couple of new voices.

I discovered the same thing on my 2595 just a short time ago!!! The TTS voice set to "Jack" and "Karen" was GONE (which I have always used from the beginning)

I see the wild fluctuations in the estimated download time. The program apparently bases this measure on very short time samples and the download speed can vary widely on short samples. I ignore the estimate unless the progress bar completely stops moving.

Why I reinstalled the map with MapUpdater.
@Pillowcase ... I'm curious. Why are you reinstalling the map?
I found that GE has wiped out all voice files and of course the voice commands and any function that requires voices. I restored the voice files from backups. Did not do a test, should have.
I was wondering what other files GE could/might have inadvertently removed.
Reinstalled the map with MapUpdater just to be on the safe side and keep my sanity.
I did find that there were a set of older asr files in the ASR directory (049IEV40.srx and 049IEV41.asr - 049IEV44.asr). These files take up close to 1GB. I removed them manually.
The 3597 now have the 2014.40 installed with 1.2 GB free. Did a simulation run. Things seem to be working properly, including voice commands. I will see if it still works properly without hiccups when I do actually road tests.
I am recovering, quite nicely, from a very successful mitral valve repair surgery. I am not supposed to drive for a few more weeks. Road tests have to wait.
Not hard to guess what I am going to do for the next map updates.
