City Navigator 2014.40 is out - installation issues

Well, 2014.40 is out as reported elsewhere. Here's some info:

GarminMapUpdater: The current Windows version remains 3.2.2 but it doesn't recognize that my nuvi 2460 is LMT so it offers to sell me a map update.

Ugh, I'm now updating with Garmin Express, which I had to install. It's now updating my 2460 and computer and we'll see what comes of it. I'll report back with results.

[Update] 2460: My 2460 now has just 231 MB free. The gmapprom.img file is 2,204,032KB and the jcv file, D3191120A.JCV is 480,049KB. I do see the previous D....110A.JCV file still on the device taking up 474,294KB.

[Later Update] Garmin Express did succeed in loading 2014.40 to my nuvi 750, 855 and 2460 (each done on a different Windows 7 PC) while GarminMapUpdater failed on each. Garmin Express also either loaded the map to the computer as part of the update or later as a Computer Only update. The 855, even with unneeded files (voices, etc.) removed still was only able to install the Lower 49 states, which also meant that the new map's voice recognition files were not installed. I'll try tomorrow to install Canada and Alaska via MapInstall to a SD card--or possibly try the SD clone technique.

[Febr 6, 2014 summary] Good news, bad news

The bad news is that for most folks, the old GarminMapUpdater program (Windows version 3.2.2) no longer works for map updates.

The good news is that Garmin Express seems to have matured to the point that it actually works for almost everyone. I still dislike having a program running in background that will rarely be needed without pausing or stopping some of its Windows Services, but for now, I expect that I'll keep Garmin Express on my PCs for future use. Garmin Express is also quite good now at installing maps to computer for use with Mapsource or BaseCamp.

The large jcv file for 2014.40 is available as of mid-morning today, so for the folks who have older nuvis that receive a tiny jcv file and for those split-screen nuvi owners who want a full-screen JV, it's there for us.

One great finding that will reduce the load on Garmin's servers which is something that should help Garmin and help us updaters is that Garmin Express keeps the big download stored on users computers so that users with one PC but multiple GPS devices is that a single download from the Garmin server will be sufficient to update all devices and the computer.

charlesd45 also offers the tip (see page 2) that you can configure Garmin Express to prevent it auto-launching when a nuvi is connected to a computer and configure it to Never look for updates.

Finally for this summary, the alandb clone method for installing City Navigator to an SD card (useful for those older nuvis like my 855 that are not auto-offered an install-to-SD option) works fine with Garmin Express.

Garmin still hasn't figured out that a North America map update should not have anything from South America included.

What do you consider "South America"???
If you are talking about Mexico, then you are wrong! Mexico is in North America!

Guatemala, Honduras etc are in Central America and they just have main highways but no city/town details!

Thank you for the insulting comments. It's gratifying to know that even on a message board I can see the ugliness of humanity rear its head for all to see. Fortunately, since you decided it was perfectly acceptable to treat me as if I was a first grader, I get to welcome you to school.

Often, the countries in the North America isthmus (Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Panama) are referred to as Central America. This is done as a matter of convenience, for Central America is not a continent and is considered part of North America. Garmin does not include these countries in their North America maps, and in fact does not have a Central America map set at all. For that section of North America various sites sell Garmin-compatible map updates for each individual country. There are also free options: OpenStreetMap or CenRut. I use CenRut.

South America officially begins at the mutual border of Panama and Colombia and includes Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Eduador, Guiana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobango, Uruguay, and Venezuela. It also includes a few dependencies: the Falkland Islands, South Georgia/South Sandwich Islands, and French Guiana.

Q: Garmin's North America map covers the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, The Bahamas, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Barthélemy, and Jamaica. One of these items is not like the others. Which one, and why?

A: French Guiana. Of all the listed locations on Garmin's North America map update, it is the only one located on the South American continent.

You could have saved yourself a little bit of time and could have avoided pissing me off with tactless comments, had you bothered to use the search engine on the site to find where I've discussed this before. Even better, you simply could have looked at Garmin's coverage map and seen it for yourself. Instead, you did...this.

You sir are why an ignore feature would be useful on this board. While I'm inclined to tell you exactly where to go, instead I wish you a good night, for you've ruined mine.

All this diatribe to a simple statement!

update

My download went fine using GE. Load to device, NUVI 9525 failed, call support, retry failed also, no error detail displayed. Found device powered off,had powered off during update, retry worked this time and completed successfully.

Updated my 2555, took a couple of hours, BUT,

1. Tried MapUpdater 3.2.2 - No go.

2. Tried again, but as Administrator, same "unexplained error"

3. Bit the bullet and downloaded GE. I have never had success before with GE. It either would not install, or would do nothing when started. Sometimes not getting so far as to even see my unit.

This time it did install easily, and did actually run with no problems seeing device.

4. Insufficient space on 2555 for even U.S. and Canada! With previous 2014.30 I could load Canada and all lower-49. Settled for Canada and border states.

Given that 95% of Canada is devoid of people AND roads, I feel ripped off.

5. Inserted 16Gig SD card, but not acceptable. GE says not less than 4G, not greater than 8G! Really? Why?

6. Downloaded to 2555 and computer. Device sees new maps, Basecamp sees new maps. A 1st for GE and me.

7. But I still have one giant complaint. GE insists on running all the time. Still there after a re-boot. I won't be using it again for another 3 or 4 months, so just why the frig Garmin thinks that I need to run their piece of krap every day, I don't know.

Yes, I have disabled via msconfig and Starup, but I should NOT have to.

I am tired of arrogant s/w writers assuming that their product is the most important s/w in the world, and absolutely must run all the time.

At least provide an obvious (for most users) option to "not run at startup of Windows".

Thank-you fellow Factory users for tolerating my RANT. mad

GE Update

I had to use Garmin Express yesterday to get the map update. I opened GE today to look at settings and found there was an update of GE from yesterday. Now that there is another change to GE I wonder what the results would be. -------Good Luck

Updated

Updated my 3597 yesterday with no problems. Updated my 3790 late this afternoon, I assume after the GE update and again no problems. If anything the 3790 update seemed even smoother than the 3597.

I have been very vocal in my dislike of GE. Not so much anymore. grin

Use Autoruns (see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.asp...) or MSConfig to disable both the startup and the "service"

.

Go to Run, and type services.msc

It's easier, and you can set Garmin Core Updater for Manual, which means it will start only when you use Garmin Express. Or, you can disable it completely.

MSConfig only disables the tray app, not the Core Updater.

In Win 7, at least, MSConfig has a "Services" tab that gets you to the Core Updater. Do not remember what XP or Vista required you to do.

For more detail about Autoruns, see the post "Keeping Garmin Express In Check" at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/39456

On Windows 8 you can click ctrl, alt and delete together. This brings up Task Manager, then click startup tab. Right click to disable the program you want.

Easier just to make changes in GE settings to me.

However, the very nice thing about services.msc is that you can also Stop and Start the service with it.

That is not possible under MSConfig services. In addition, you need to reboot the computer for changes to be put into affect. Not so with services.msc.

Tried running mapinstall (after unsuccessful mapupdater). I get this: "The following maps will fit on your nüvi 2460 (Unit ID xxxxxxxx).

MapInstall will not install Junction View or Voice Recognition files to your 2460LMT. MapInstall also does not remove the old map files so that a manual deletion is required to avoid running out of storage on the nuvi in the future. MapInstall can also only install maps to your GPS that are currently on your computer. If your 2014.40 map update didn't work, then 2014.40 will not be on the computer for MapInstall to install to your GPS.

If you read the two or more threads here at The Factory, most will feel that it's time to install and use Garmin Express and give up on GarminMapUpdater, MapInstall, etc.

Working now

I gave up attempting to use my laptops to update my gps. I am now using a computer that has never seen any Garmin software/drivers/etc... and attempted to use the Map Updater. This generated an error, so I then installed Garmin Express. The maps have downloaded, and are now being installed. Looks like I will need to use this computer for all future map updates.

Re: GE running in the background

When I see that a new map version is available, I install Garmin Express, run it to get the new map, and then uninstall it until the next time. I do not like the resources it uses (and wastes) between events. FWIW, Map Update has not worked for me the last two map releases. I used Garmin Express instead and it worked with no issues.

I have suspected that some good percentage of the hangs, failures and other shortcomings reported here are due to traffic/server overload at Garmin. I have a 75/35 Fios connection and see estimated completion times cycle between 45 minutes and 5 hours on the screen when the map is initially released. I once picked up a new map about a month after release and the download completed in about 40 minutes.

If I was Garmin: I'd make sure all the replaced software apps failed sooner than later as it would stop all the moaning from the user community. Mapsource

Mapsource has never been an issue, although Garmin no longer supports or updates it as they want us to use Basecamp instead. It's MapUpdater that seems to be on it's way out as many, if not most people, are finding it doesn't work for this latest update.

English Voice

I updated the map software on my 3597 using GE. I then had to run an errand, and my 7 year old came with me. She asked me to let the GPS route us to the store. I inserted the address, hit Go, and, all of a sudden, an Asian voice begins routing us. Installation of the map update wiped out all other voices. But my daughter laughed and laughed. She wanted to leave the Garmin on so she could listen to it route us to the store.

Turns out, the map update deleted all voices except Japanese, but it left English text, etc. intact. So I downloaded the English voice file, and all's good.

But my daughter sure did find the Asian routing funny.

Yes, but.....

My findings

I attempted several times to use different versions of MapUpdater and as the majority of others have reported here I received an error message.

I then went on Garmins site and downloaded for the very first time in my life Garmin Express. The download and installation went perfectly, so far so good.

I downloaded & installed the maps to my computer and cloned device under 30 minutes. I check both devices and everything installed perfectly.

I'm confident at this point of time and decide to upgrade Garmin Express to it's latest version which was 2.5.2. last night. Download and installation done without a hitch.

I plug in my second GPS and the maps are downloaded and installed as expected.

Why is it that it works for some and not others ??? Who knows but as others have brought forward, perhaps doing the update outside of the peak hours will increase your success rate.

The good news is that I just read in the GPSPassion forum that Garmin has updated MapUpdater to version 3.3.3 for Windows. And guess what! I tried it and it works for 2014.40! You can download it here:

Wonderful!!! Thank you alandb!!!!

I really, really do appreciate that information...and also the link you provided for MapUpdater v3.3.3.

I just successfully downloaded the newest version of MapUpdater (confirmed v3.3.3) and I will now download Map Update 2014.40 and install it on my GPS.

I did NOT want to use Garmin Express...
