City Navigator 2014.40 is out - installation issues

Well, 2014.40 is out as reported elsewhere. Here's some info:

GarminMapUpdater: The current Windows version remains 3.2.2 but it doesn't recognize that my nuvi 2460 is LMT so it offers to sell me a map update.

Ugh, I'm now updating with Garmin Express, which I had to install. It's now updating my 2460 and computer and we'll see what comes of it. I'll report back with results.

[Update] 2460: My 2460 now has just 231 MB free. The gmapprom.img file is 2,204,032KB and the jcv file, D3191120A.JCV is 480,049KB. I do see the previous D....110A.JCV file still on the device taking up 474,294KB.

[Later Update] Garmin Express did succeed in loading 2014.40 to my nuvi 750, 855 and 2460 (each done on a different Windows 7 PC) while GarminMapUpdater failed on each. Garmin Express also either loaded the map to the computer as part of the update or later as a Computer Only update. The 855, even with unneeded files (voices, etc.) removed still was only able to install the Lower 49 states, which also meant that the new map's voice recognition files were not installed. I'll try tomorrow to install Canada and Alaska via MapInstall to a SD card--or possibly try the SD clone technique.

[Febr 6, 2014 summary] Good news, bad news

The bad news is that for most folks, the old GarminMapUpdater program (Windows version 3.2.2) no longer works for map updates.

The good news is that Garmin Express seems to have matured to the point that it actually works for almost everyone. I still dislike having a program running in background that will rarely be needed without pausing or stopping some of its Windows Services, but for now, I expect that I'll keep Garmin Express on my PCs for future use. Garmin Express is also quite good now at installing maps to computer for use with Mapsource or BaseCamp.

The large jcv file for 2014.40 is available as of mid-morning today, so for the folks who have older nuvis that receive a tiny jcv file and for those split-screen nuvi owners who want a full-screen JV, it's there for us.

One great finding that will reduce the load on Garmin's servers which is something that should help Garmin and help us updaters is that Garmin Express keeps the big download stored on users computers so that users with one PC but multiple GPS devices is that a single download from the Garmin server will be sufficient to update all devices and the computer.

charlesd45 also offers the tip (see page 2) that you can configure Garmin Express to prevent it auto-launching when a nuvi is connected to a computer and configure it to Never look for updates.

Finally for this summary, the alandb clone method for installing City Navigator to an SD card (useful for those older nuvis like my 855 that are not auto-offered an install-to-SD option) works fine with Garmin Express.

I tried mapupdater and it

I tried mapupdater and it failed to start the download on my 765.... decided to try express and it did start the download...still running.... but I must be blind because I did not see the option to update the computer also.... I thought express now had it hidden some place...

In Express you have to click the More Details to the right of the name of the update, then choose Advanced Options.

Thanks! knew it had to be "simple".. smile

Garmin MapUpdater.

It appears 2014.40 will not install using Garmin MapUpdater. I had to go to Express to install on my 755T. I still used the cloning method (with Express) to install directly to the SD card and everything went fine. But it looks like I will need to rewrite the FAQ for the cloning method to use Express instead of Mapupdater.

Using MapUpdater Now

Odd. I'm not encountering any issues with MapUpdater. I'm currently downloading 2014.40 as we speak, and it has 56 minutes left to go before the download completes. Not only that, it properly detected my 1300 and offered the map update like it normally does.

Note however I am not having the map installed to the device because I do that manually. Garmin still hasn't figured out that a North America map update should not have anything from South America included.

That's interesting. I've tried GarminMapUpdater (Windows version) on two PCs with my nuvi 2460 and 750. In each case, I get the same failed results as jjen reports in another thread:

Tried Mapupdater it gave me an unexpected error. Tried again and it wanted a product code that wasn't on the Garmin site. 2014.4 was there but no info. Tried Garmin Express and it wanted my email address. It appears to be working now but is running slow. It must be their website. Garmin has been messing again.

I also received an error

I also received an error when tried to use MapUpdater.

MapUpdater doesn't work for me

I've tried it 4 times and each time it indicates I need to buy the map or enter the key.
I was able to get the key for the 2014.40 map by going into my maps and scrolling down to 2014.40 where it showed the key code and unlock code.
I entered the key code and map installer says there is an error and needs to close.

I previously also tried by using Garmin Express (I HATE IT) and downloading to computer only. Took about 40 minutes and then displayed a configuring bar. The bar remained on and never installed the map to the PC.

I then tried Garmin Express again and chose to install to GPS and PC. Again it is hanging on the configuring bar with 3 minutes left; it's been that way for over 30 minutes and appears to be frozen.

I checked the .sytem folder and it did in fact download the map to the 2460 along with the JCV and ASR files. Although it displays not to disconnect the Nuvi I will since it appears it's locked on the configuring screen.

This Garmin Express is a real POS in my opinion and I'm still baffled why it works for some and not others. I am quite disappointed that MapUpdater no longer works for me.

Yes, BUT...

shrifty wrote:

Yes, that's it. But it doesn't work (except for Strephon, for some reason) with the new 2014.40 map update.

Me either

I tried to edit this, but took too long. That didn't work for me, it said I need to go to Garmin.com to purchase the maps. I have an LMT, so obviously something isn't right.

I can't get Garmin Express to install either, something is corrupt on my PC with it and I can't figure out what it is at this point. Trying another laptop, see how it goes.

Large JCV

My guess from past URLs is that the large full-screen JCV file that's used on some older nuvi models that offer Junction View should be manually downloadable from:

http://download.garmin.com/support/2014_40/NA/JV/D3060130A.J...

But, for now this link isn't working. Either 1) I have the wrong link address; 2) the large JCV isn't available yet; or 3) Garmin will no longer offer the large JCV from a Garmin server.

.NET?

shrifty wrote:

It's certainly possible that you have a Microsoft .NET problem if you expect a corrupt PC issue. You may want to go to Windows Update and see if you have a .NET update available or go to your "View Update History" and see if .NET 4 has successfully installed.

The Windows version of Garmin Express needs:

•Windows XP SP3 or newer, Microsoft .NET 4 Client Profile (included)
•1024 x 768 display, USB port and 1 GB RAM
•High speed Internet access (Not for use with dial-up, mobile or satellite connections)
•May require up to 13 GB free disk space

No joy with map updater

Downloaded the map in 18 mins, but has been stuck on 'building' for 30 mins or so. I hope this isn't a bad sign! mad

Glad I tried it on the 775 first, and not the 3790!

Not Good

I have never and don't really want to install Garmin Express. Map Updater has always worked for me.

With the problems reported here, I'm going to wait a little longer to see how some of you other brave souls make out.

I certainly hope that others can get Map Updater to work.

The PC is good, I assume that is a corruption with regards to Garmin Express.

I currently have Win 7 x64, .Net 4.5.1 and the rest of course smile

I'm going to assume that Garmin techs are going to have a sleepless night attempting to resolve this, so I'm heading out to dinner using 2014.30!

Still Can' Install To PC

Something definitely wrong on Garmin's side.
Using Garmin Express again I am still unable to load the map to the PC. The last attempt did in fact load the map and all required files to the 2460LMT and it works properly.

I opened Garmin Express again and it indicated my maps were up to date with version 2014.40.
I then chose to reinstall map option, using advanced tab, I instructed to download to PC only. Once again received message "Garmin Elevated Installer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I have no issues with Net Framework, everything is up to date there.

It has never been easier

It has never been easier today to install the new map. I have a nuvi 650 with a sd card of 4gb.
With mapupdater I chose the part that I could install on my gps. Instructions for the suite was very clear. I used MapInstall to install the complete map on the sd card without problem.

For once I did not spent an hour to find how to install the map on the sd card gps.

Garmin problem?

It's something on Garmin's end or an installed program is preventing your copies of MapUpdater from working. I just completed the download and install to hard drive, using MapUpdater. Using MapInstall to compile the map for use on the GPS comes later, but even so, it worked.

One thing you may want to try is to elevate the exe's permissions and run it as an administrator (Windows 7 - right click on file and select "Run as Administrator"). I did that myself and had no issues.

.

Seems that with every map update, there are numerous inconsistencies and issues and what runs on one person's PC/device is never guaranteed to operate in the same way on another PC/device. I like the map updates and appreciate that we have them available but this constant issue thing is maddening. It's pretty much come to the point where I now dread updating my maps. evil

I really cannot figure out why Garmin cannot fix these issues...maybe they're just not trying anymore. rolleyes

Tried "Run as admin"

with MapUpdater on Vista Home Premium 64 .. still got error. But it is good news to hear that you got MapUpdater to work Strephon. Maybe not all is lost with MapUpdater.

Unfortunately, the "Install to computer" only option doesn't help if you need the auxiliary files (like junction view and ASR).

Tried again, no success

I attempted to un-install Garmin Express (not 100% certain on the registry entries I need to remove) as well as anything Garmin related (except POI-Loader) and attempted to Run the Map Updater again. It asked me to purchase, tried to enter the code and had an unexpected error. For a laugh, I then tried to reinstall Garmin Express and ran into the following error:

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.

Clock OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'CoreServiceInstaller.msi' int he box below.

Once I hit cancel, I then receive another error that states:

The older version of Garmin Express cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group.

I am not sure what to remove at this point, there is nothing listed in the Programs and Features section in the Control Panel related to Garmin Express.

Done for awhile, NOW it's time for dinner!

True. My 1300 isn't supposed to have Junction View. I have to download it from Garmin when it becomes available. If my device was a newer unit, like the 2497LMT I want to get, then I'd be trying to install to the unit, despite the transfer taking upwards of two hours.

GarminCure 3 may be able to fix it, if you want to take the time to work at it. But I agree with Juggernaut. Contact Garmin. It should be their responsibility to replace the unit, since it was their software that broke it.

Loaded USA & Canada OK from Express in the 660 (Via the "SD Card Trick"). Again, Express said it could not load NA, and gave suggestions on what to load... I loaded USA & Canada... and after it was done, I re-named the files, as usual...

I didn't try it in the car yet... (Way too much snow in Chicagoland!)

but it worked....

P.S. USA & Canada alone was just shy of 2GB!!!

Garmin MapUpdater

Strephon as well as others (https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?72674-City-Navigato...) have successfully downloaded 2014.40 using MapUpdater but It concerns me that this method has failed for the majority of users. I just hope it's another glitch on Garmins end today and that tomorrow it'll be up and running as in the past.

I just upgraded from XP and downloaded 2014.30 onto my new computer on January 12th with MapUpdater without a hitch. In the above link another user tried today downloading CN EU 2014.40 with MapUpdater and it worked, so for now I'll remain positive.

One thing is sure though, I'm not about to update and when I do, I'll be using the alandb cloning method to prevent bricking my units.

Often, the countries in the North America isthmus (Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Panama) are referred to as Central America. This is done as a matter of convenience, for Central America is not a continent and is considered part of North America. Garmin does not include these countries in their North America maps, and in fact does not have a Central America map set at all. For that section of North America various sites sell Garmin-compatible map updates for each individual country. There are also free options: OpenStreetMap or CenRut. I use CenRut.

South America officially begins at the mutual border of Panama and Colombia and includes Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Eduador, Guiana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobango, Uruguay, and Venezuela. It also includes a few dependencies: the Falkland Islands, South Georgia/South Sandwich Islands, and French Guiana.

Q: Garmin's North America map covers the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, The Bahamas, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Barthélemy, and Jamaica. One of these items is not like the others. Which one, and why?

A: French Guiana. Of all the listed locations on Garmin's North America map update, it is the only one located on the South American continent.

You could have saved yourself a little bit of time and could have avoided pissing me off with tactless comments, had you bothered to use the search engine on the site to find where I've discussed this before.
