Elsewhere in the Factory's fourms, jfossy posted that there's a new Garmin nuvi "Jill," version 3.20, which offers "Improved road name pronunciations." In searching, I think that Karen, Samantha and probably Jack were also updated at about the same time with the same improvement.

I can never keep my voice versions straight so I now have a Post-It note with my English-language TTS findings. Here's what I found. Since Jack is the name used for both the high and low quality voice files, I have both listed--they are NOT interchangeable--WebUpdater or Garmin Express will offer you the one you can use. If you find updates or corrections to my list, please advise.

Please note that the nuvi model you have will dictate the TTS voices you can use--if your nuvi uses the low-quality voice engine, you need the small files and if your nuvi uses the high-quality voice engine, it uses the large files and the newest nuvis now use the TTS3 files.

Name, Current_version, Garmin's_webpage_date(m/d/y)

Large filesize, higher-quality
Jill, 3.40, 6/21/13
Jack, 2.20, 12/13/13
Karen, 2.20, 6/13/13
Lee, 1.90, 8/11/09
Emily, 2.50, 6/18/13
Daniel, 2.20, 6/18/13
Sangeeta, 1.00, 3/18/00

Note: the devices that use the above large filesize TTS voices also have the following non-TTS voices:

American Michelle, 2.00, 1/24/14
Australian Matilda, 1.00, possibly 12/7/11
British James, 2.10, possibly 11/29/11
British Kate, 2.10, possibly 11/30/11)

Small filesize, lower-quality
Samantha, 2.00, 6/12/13 (See my post of 6/1/14)
Jack, 2.00, 6/12/13 (See my post of 6/1/14)
Karen, 1.20, 6/18/13
Lee, 1.20, 6/18/13
Daniel, 1.30, 6/18/13
Serena, 1.30, 6/18/13
Sangeeta, 1.10, 7/20/11

Large file size, higher-quality TTS3
Serena, 2.20, 5/10/18 (also offers Real Voice)
Samantha, 2.70, 10/2/18 (also offers Real Voice)
Daniel, 2.20, 5/10/18
Jack, 2.70, 10/2/18
Lee, 2.30, 5/10/18
Karen,2.20, 5/10/18
Sangeeta, 2.20, 5/10/18

I also was pleasantly surprised to see that my nuvi 2460 shows the voice version being used in the Tools/Settings/System/About page. I think that most older nuvis (e.g., my 750 and 855) require delving into hidden developer screens to find voice versions. But my yellow Post-It is really all I need now if I keep it updated.

These voice change logs can be hard to find. I find the best way is to do an internet search for (minus the quotes) "garmin voice version karen" and substituting the name desired in place of Karen when doing the search--or for the newest nuvis, search for (minus the quotes) "garmin voice version serena tts3" for current updates with similar substitutions of your desired name in place of Serena. In general for now, look for internet search hits that are something like:

(for the hi-quality voices)
Voice, Australian English-Karen (TTS) software version

(for the low-quality voices--note the (v) after the (TTS))
Voice, Australian English-Karen (TTS)(v) software version

(for the TTS3 voices)
Voice, British-English, Serena (TTS3) software version

[Update 6/24/13] Thanks to MikeG1 and joegambino for quickly finding newer voice updates. Also noted is that there are now appearing some Garmin voices that are TTS3 which may for the new nuvi xxx7 series (or maybe just the nuvi 3597) devices that use new Real Voice files. I also have seen some Garmin TTS2 files but haven't found which devices use(d) them.

[Update 6/26/13] Thanks to charlesd45 for confirming that another of the xxx7 series beyond the 3597 uses Real Voice files and for further confusing me wink with the new nuvi 2597 model and probably many other of the new 2013 nuvi xxx7 models: I'm not quite sure where to place this so I'll offer it here for now. The new nuvi 2597, in addition to using the new large Real Voice files like TTS3 Samantha, also offers smaller voice files and yet another name: American English Michelle 2.00. And thanks for pointing out the GMapTool site.

[Update 4/18/14]
Thanks to dferron for leading me to find the new non-TTS voices for the GPS models that use the large filesize voice engine as well as the TTS Sangeeta voice.

Yes, I have gotten my honey

Yes, I have gotten my honey Karen's voice back on my 3597 with this update.

Why I have a Garmin

I posted this in the Factory joke section earlier.
Having a Garmin GPS in my car is just like traveling with a woman next to me! Karen or Jill same difference.
==============================================

I have a little GPS

I've had it all my life

It’s better than the normal ones

My GPS is my wife

It gives me full instructions

Especially on how to drive

"It's thirty miles an hour", it says

"You're doing thirty five".

It tells me when to stop and start

And when to use the brakes

And tells me that it's never ever

Safe to overtake

It tells me when a light is red

And when it goes to green

It seems to know instinctively

Just when to intervene

It lists the vehicles just in front

And all those to the rear

And taking this into account

It specifies my gear.

I'm sure no other driver

Has so helpful a device

For when we leave and lock the car

It still gives its advice

It fills me up with counseling

Each journey's pretty fraught

So why don't I exchange it

And get a quieter sort?

Ah well, you see, it cleans the house,

Makes sure I'm properly fed,

It washes all my shirts and things

And - keeps me warm in bed!

Despite all these advantages

And my tendency to scoff,

I do wish that once in a while

I could turn the damned thing off.

Been married for 40 years, I honestly report I have never had an accident in all that time. I taught my wife how to drive, however, she did have an accident.

I continue to receive driving instructions from her even after reminding her who the teacher is and who was the student. That falls on deaf ears. grin

This 2595 device uses

On my 765T, I get this info by

This 765 device uses
"Voice: 3.10 (American English-jill)"
which turns out to be one down version so I may go update it.

Just updated my unit today and saw that Karen had an update in her street pronunciations. My wife & I prefer her voice as being the easiest for us to understand. She does (did) have trouble with some of the Spanish street names in Tucson. Haven't tried it out yet but it'll be interesting if she's better at those street names.

Karen still pronounces BL as "Bllll" rather than Business Loop.

sound on 3597

does anyone have sound issue on the the nuvi 3597 ,is the sound muted on it every time it wakes from sleep mode , i have never had this on any of my other nuvi,s it does this all the time even though i do not have automatic sound and mute checked in settings ,when i press the button for sound it shows the slider all the way across and i have to slide it part way back to get the sound back on, would appreciate if you can let me know if this is normal for this unit, as i sent the first 3597 back as i thought it was a fault only to find the new unit does the same thing, thanks

Thanks,

I see that the GMapTool website and program (English or Polish language website and multiple language program) has been mentioned a few times here at the Factory. It's new to me. There's a lot offered there and it certainly seems to be up-to-date with regards to voice files. The only file I didn't see mentioned is your small Michelle voice that you say is on your nuvi 2597. It is where I may search first for descriptions of nuvi firmware updates and much more in addition to voices. The GMapTool program looks powerful but possibly not for the weak of heart.

Questions remaining after looking through the English language files here are: 1) what devices use(d) the TTS2 files; 2) which devices use(d) the VCT language files; and 3) why are there some voices [e.g., Sangeeta TTS v1.00 of 3/18/10] that look like they should be offered to many of us with the large voice file-using nuvi models but are not.

I didn't see the Michelle

I didn't see the Michelle file either. But it is on my unit.

New Jack & Jill

When preparing to update to the new City Navigator 2014.30 map, I found that WebUpdater offered a new Jack and a new Jill.

Jill: 3.40 (ChangeLog: null) This update may be dated 6/21/13

Jack: 2.10 (Changelog: null) This update may be dated 6/12/13

Given the null changelog for each, I don't know if the voices are truly updates with a changelog that hasn't been updated yet--or if the voice version numbers were updated with no changes being made.

Jack 2.20 12/13/2013

CraigW wrote:

Jack has another null update: 2.20 as of 12/13/13.

More voices

Thanks to a question posed by member dferron, I've added several new voices:

To the large filesize TTS devices: Sangeeta (TTS), and non-TTS Michelle, Matilda, James and Kate.

Also: it's been ascertained that Garmin's WebUpdater may not offer your automotive GPS these latest new voices. To get all English language voices your device is capable of using, rather than using WebUpdater, you will need to use Garmin Express or myDashboard.

6/1/14 updates

Thanks to Factory member raycock for pointing me to several new English language voice updates.

First, and quite odd, there are (maybe) two new voice updates to the small filesize low quality voices, Jack and Samantha, to v2.00. What's odd to me is that the revision date remains the same as for the previous version updates for these two voices and the Change History is blank. But for what it's worth, the small filesize voices Jack and Samantha are now 2.00 although I remain confused on what was changed and when the change occurred.

There are also seven new large TTS3 voice updates, essentially every English language TTS3 voice, for the new high-end nuvi models using TTS3. They were all updated to v2.00 on 5/23/14 and the Change History indicates only "Database Updates," whatever that means. There's one more confusing issue here with one of the v2.00 TTS3 voice updates. As raycock has found and I confirmed:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/42706

the Samantha TTS3 update to 2.00 was successful, yet the voice version displayed remains the previous 1.20. It's unknown as to whether Samantha v2.00 is simply a naming issue error on Garmin's part meaning that the version is 2.00 but is mislabeled--or if the "database update" for Samantha failed even though the update showed success.

[Update] The above link now offers proof that the installed Samantha voice is unchanged from the previous v1.20.

Samantha v2.00 TTS3 now can be installed

See:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/42706

The latest 2.00 to 2.00 (yes, really) update changed the voice file size from 31,794,176 bytes to 31,778,816 bytes.

Change History

Changes made from version 2.00 to 2.00:
◦Updated incorrect region file

Changes made from version 1.20 to 2.00:
◦Database updates

Changes made from version 1.10 to 1.20:
◦Added new phrases, improved pronunciation.

:)

Got it. Thanks,

Checked the audio version, it shows Samantha 2.00.

Installing New Voice on Garmin Nuvi 2597 LMT

I have a new North American Garmin Nuvi 2597 LMT...I would much prefer hearing a British or Australian voice over the american voice that comes standard on it. I managed to download .RGN files with British voices, Daniel and Emily but I noticed that the voice files on my Garmin are in a different format .vpm and .sum.

Is there any way to convert the RGN files to .VPM and .SUM files or is there a way to install the files ? I have the connector plugin and Garmin Express installed but neither of these helps me install the new voices.

There are free voices in Garmin Express....But Optional English languages are not there.

Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to The Factory. First, the .sum file is a checksum file created by your nuvi's diagnotics and is not needed. I'm pretty sure the 2597 uses the TTS3 voices and I hope these are the files you're trying to install.

Here are three options. Please let us know if you have a problem and if you succeed.

In case space on the nuvi becomes an issue (these TTS3 voices are large), you may want to remove the voices in languages you'll never use before adding new voices. As always--back up your 2597 before tinkering and deleting any files. The faqs, tutorials and Learning tabs here at The Factory will help you with each issue, plus others you haven't experienced yet.

1) I've seen references to using WebUpdater

http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp

I've not tried it but instructions have you connecting your nuvi to your computer, then dragging and dropping your rgn voice file onto the WebUpdater icon which will start the installation of the vpm file to your 2597. One advantage to using method 2 or 3 rather than this method is that you will download the voice versions suited to your device. Given that there are now three common voice types and that each GPS device can only use the correct type, you need to be very careful downloading rgn voice files to make sure you're downloading the version that will work with your device.

The 2nd method is to log into your myGarmin account

https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/login.htm?reauth&service=http...

then go to (I think) myDashboard to find Voices. If it's not myDashboard, someone will correct me soon. Download and install the voices you want.

The third method is to use Garmin Express. With your GPS device connected to your computer, you need to (once again, I think) go to the options, then select the English language voices and they'll be downloaded and installed. Note that this method installs all English language voices and doesn't let you pick and choose which you want. (You mention free voices available on Garmin Express. These are "doesn't speak street names" voices and are not the ones you want. You need to look to Options to see the voices I'm describing here.)

Adding these extra voices requires the above gymnastics. Once your device has installed a new voice, future updates to that voice with occur automatically with WebUpdater or Garmin Express. I'm sorry that I'm not giving the exact procedure for method 2 and 3, but I haven't used Method 2 and I currently don't have Garmin Express installed on my PC.

The faq

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/42708

lists the current voices and versions. Your device after adding all English language voices will have two British "speaks street names" voices and two Australian "speaks street names" voice, one male and one female for each accent, plus a few more "doesn't speak street names" voices. You will even have an Indian English voice available.

With the newer nuvis as I see you have, you should be able to see your active voice version by tapping Settings/Device/About, then look for Audio Voice Version which will tell you whose voice you're using and its version.

On my Dezl it shows Samantha at 1.40 and no upgrades available in GE. I had thought that was where it was, just didn't go far enough. GE says 2.20 is available for the 2597, I'm just too trifling to go out in the cold to get it to update.

Depending upon the Dezl's voice engine, Samantha should be either v2.00 or 2.20 (TTS or TTS3, respectively). As I've found just recently and updated in the FAQ, Garmin Express does not always offer voice updates and I consider this one of the few flaws with the newer versions of GE. I predict that your voice update for the Dezl will be offered if either: 1) you try using WebUpdater with the Dezl connected; or 2) using Garmin Express with the Dezl connected and selected, then tap Tools/OptionalUpdates/VoiceUpdates, then check English and tap Install. One thing remains true with Garmin Express: new voices will not be offered with Garmin Express except by going to the Tools/OptionalUpdates/VoiceUpdates selection. If you try either, I'd like to hear your results here.

PS: regarding your first question. I gave you info on how to check the newer nuvis for their active voice version. For the older nuvis (3xx, 7x0, etc), voice versions can only be displayed by going to the hidden diagnostics pages of the nuvi.

I tried the English update

I tried the English update in GE earlier last week and took the Voice updates. But it didn't update Samantha. I'll have to try it again. Mayhap's I deleted the update when I cleared out all the extra voices.

CraigW

I just downloaded the English updates with GE and Samantha remained at version 1.40. It installed all the versions of American English as well as the British, Australian, and Indian voices. I guess it will eventually updated to 2.0 or 2.2 when it's ready.

Samantha

I would be interested in hearing how Samantha does after the update. I find that her "vocabulary" is significantly less detailed than Jill's was on my older GPS.

What device?

Your account shows a nuvi 350 and 760 and as far as I know, neither offers the Samantha voice. Do you have a new device? I ask because two voice engines offer a Samantha and only the TTS3-enabled engine has this new Samantha update.

I'm not the person to ask since I don't use her voice regularly, but after the voice update I did try it out on some routes around town. I then returned to Karen which a prefer over the new Samantha voice.

Yes, I have a Nuvi 65LM with Samantha. I was fairly disappointed that downloading Jill's voice was not even an option. Samantha is OK, but does not have as large a vocabulary as Jill. Samantha mispronounces many more street names than Jill did.

Ah, my guess is that the 65M uses the lowest quality of the three TTS voice engines. If so it's latest update for Sam was:

Samantha, 2.00, 6/12/13

so the version 2.20 TTS3 version doesn't apply to your device.

Have you tried any of the others:

Jack, 2.00, 6/12/13
Karen, 1.20, 6/18/13
Lee, 1.20, 6/18/13
Daniel, 1.30, 6/18/13
Serena, 1.30, 6/18/13
Sangeeta, 1.10, 7/20/11

Serena may be a good choice to try with your 65LM since it has Real Voice (but not Real Directions):

Just got a Drive 60LM,

Just got a Drive 60LM, replacing an old Nuvi, and I'd like to get Karen's voice on it since that's who we're used to (she might also get jealous if we start taking Samantha on our road trips!). But it's not clear to me how to get that voice since Garmin Express seems to only go to the Garmin Garage, which only has novelty voices.

So should I follow the procedure as outlined in some of the previous posts? Is there a Karen voice file with "Real Directions" support? And I assume that they've fixed some of the earlier quirks such as pronouncing "Dr" as "Doctor", even when it's part of a street name!

Greetings,

You may be the first Drive owner to check for voices so I hope you try to install them all and test them out. What voices come with the Drive 60 out of the box? We'd also like to hear how much memory and free memory your Drive has. You will be installing a lot of voices so the download may be quite large.

Here's what I expect will work for you if the Drives work as the older nuvis do:

Connect the Drive to your computer and start Garmin Express.

If you haven't already done so, create a Drive 60LM profile by clicking the big '+' "Add a Device."

Click the Drive 60LM icon.

Click the Tools icon.

Scroll down to Optional Updates and click Language Files.

Place a check in English, then scroll down and click Install.

That should do it. I see in the Drive 60LM specs that the device speaks Real Directions. When you choose a voice, be sure to pick one that Speaks Real Directions as Karen does.

Thanks! I had already figured it out and selected Karen, so my wife and I have our traveling "threesome" back in business, although I haven't had time yet to try it out with the new voice (RealDirections did work with Samantha's voice).

After loading the English language package and without deleting ones I definitely don't need, Windows Explorer shows that I'm using 3.42Gb out of 7.02Gb on the device, which of course is taking all visible memory into account. Garmin Express says I'm using 51% of available memory with 3.4Gb free.

The original languages are apparently a North & South American configuration, and each one is available with and without RD. The RD speakers are generally not the same as the non-RD version. The included RealDirections languages are:

American (and Canadian?) English - Samantha
French Canadian - Julie
Indian English - Sanjeeta (English with an accent??)
Spanish for the Americas - Paulina
Brazilian Portuguese - Raquel
